These have been out for several months apparently, but I just noticed
them:

Shostakovich: Symphonies 5 & 10 (and 9 conducted by Kurtz)

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=SICC-1601

I believe this is the first issue of any of these items by Sony. 10
was available on the Columbia "Masterworks Portrait" series early in
the CD era.

Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique and Debussy: La Mer

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=SICC-1600

There's also a Tchaikovsky 6:

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=SICC-1516

Also, there's this important Ormandy issue of Prokofiev symphonies:

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=SICC-1587

I've already heard this one, and it's a beauty.

There's a rather disappointing box of Ormandy's Columbia Shostakovich
symphony recordings, but none of the RCA recordings (13-15) are
included. A missed opportunity.

The Mitropoulos Pathetique and the Berlioz were also on Masterworks Portrait. Wish they would do the Verklaerte Nacht, since the Tallis Fantasia was already issued with the VW 4

The Mitro Shostakovich #10 (c/w Kurtz #9) were also on Masterworks
Portrait.

The blistering VW4 + Tallis Fantasia (c/w Stokowski's VW 6) were on an
Essential Classics, but I don't know if this was marketed in the USA.

There was a Japanese issue:

Though cdjapan does not list it.

There were actually a couple of UK releases of this program, but of course
neither was issued here. I think I got my copy from Berkshire long ago.

FWIW, the Philadelphia Orchestra season announcement for 2013-14 includes
not a note of VW, meaning that the 80th anniversary of the 4th's completion
will most likely pass without its having yet been played here.

I have these on "Retrospective Records."

By the way, there's a different Mitropoulos VW 4, recorded in 1953, released
on Music & Arts.

Still available here in Greece (Sony Greece S2K 89658). It is a 2-cd set with Tchaikovsky 5, Shostakovich 5, Kije and Prokofiev's 3rd with the Philadephia O.

Nickson had also released Vaughan Williams' 2 pianos concerto and 2nd Symphony with Mitropoulos.

Well, that's really interesting. I have Nickson 1002-1011 and thought that
was all of them. There's no PC nor VW 2 in there. Was there a Nicoson
1001? or 1012? I believe I read somewhere that 1002-1011 were all of them.
I couldn' google up any references to these recordings either (on any
label). Can you provide more information?

The first batchincluded the numbers you mentioned. However more than 30 numbers were issued thereafter which were made-per-order. Try to contact him directly at the address mentioned in the titles you have or call him and he will be more than happy to serve you. Mention my name if you want to.

Re: Mitropoulos Columbia Stereo Recordings:

Perhaps someon with direct knowledge can clarify something for me.

I had assumed that the Lalo Symphonie Espagnole and Saint-Saens
Violin Concerto No. 3 (both with Zino Francescatti) were stereo
recordings having appeared on MS 6201 and MS 6268, respectively.

An on-line dicography http://fischer.hosting.paran.com/music/Francescatti/discography-francescatti.htm#Lalo
indicates that only monaural recordings were made o these two
works with Mitropoulos and suggests
that the LP issues in Columbia's MS series were artificial stereo.

the Saint-Saens, originally coupled with the Paganini #1, was definitely electronically rechanneled.

The Lalo was recorded April 22, 1957, along with the Tchaikovsky
Capriccio Italien. I believe they were both issued in true stereo
(although Columbia was notoriously late to that party).

There are some real treasures here - the Shost 10, and #9[1947] with Kurtz are real classics...The Berlioz is excellent, too - one of the best. Fine Tchaik 6 as well.

Weren't there some early Nickson issues which were on LP only?

Only the first number was on LP only. All subsequent on CD only.

It's worth seeking out for the Prokofiev which is simply amazing.
