Saw it for the first time today, 88 CDs.

How many will splurge for the Korean version right away versus waiting for the international release?

I probably will not, given I already own probably 80-90% of the recordings.

The HMV price if bought with other items to qualify for highest discount is about $360 USD.
Remember that the Korean editions usually have the CD first enclosed in a plastic envelope (similar to those used for LPs by the Japnese in olden days) and then that gets stuffed into the cardboard sleeve with the original jacket artwork. The inner sleeve is not used on the interntional releases.

Feh. So stupid that the contents of each CD mirrors the original LP
release, resulting in CDs with only 35 minutes of music.

Great stuff in that collection: 1977 Beethoven cycle remastered -
finally. A few of the Bruckner symphonies that haven't been remastered
properly until now. the anthems album - which I just bought.
Interesting also including the St. Matthew and B minor but no operas
again.

Yep, the Koreans hardly ever include opera in their collections. The very similar Solti set is the same. Luckily Universal povided us Solti's opera directly at bargain prices.

Symphonies 3, 5, 9 were remastered a decade ago http://tiny.cc/e3vjrw

Yes. I know. I own that 2-CD set, and have discussed it numerous times
in rmcr. I'm surprised you don't have those posts sitting in your
little cache of rmcr posts that you keep handy. You know, the posts
I've written over the decades that you feel obliged to quote
incessantly?

BTW - I also own that 1977 cycle in the Galleria version as part of
the Karajan Symphony Edition, and in the Ambisonic-mastered version.
The Ambisonic version sounds good played back in a surround set up,
but the mastering didn't really address the basic mix of the cycle.

This 70s box will finally give us the entire 1977 cycle in OIBP.

What's the difference?

Don't most people have carousel CD decks?

Isn't it really about the price point? If the price point is good, who
cares if the set is spread out over a few more discs than need be?

Where have *any* of the 1970s Berlin Philharmonic Bruckner symphony
recordings been remastered previously? (Not that I am convinced much,
if anything, will be done in this new edition)

NO.

They haven't.

Perhaps I didn't word that very well. I said "a few" because not all
of the Bruckner symphonies in the Karajan complete set were recorded
in the 70s. 1-3 are digital recordings, which also haven't been
remastered properly. The few I'm talking about not being remastered
"until now" are the ones included in this 70s box (ie: 4-9).

Now that I think about it, the word "few' wasn't the best choice to
begin with, as 6 out of the 9 Bruckner symphonies are included here.

So now, Mr Maturity (Oscar) is making menstrual cycle jokes. I wonder
what his hot-bodied girlfriend thinks about that?

Carousel decks have nothing to do with it.

The issue is:

1A) The pricing is always based on the number of discs instead of
minutes of music. If this set maximized discs space and came on 30%
fewer discs, the price would be less.

1B) It's going to drive up the shipping rates. When the international
version is released, it probably will be a lot cheaper on MDT and
Presto than Amazon, but the savings will be lost to the shipping
surcharge.

2) It takes up unnecessary shelf space.

While that used to be the way that things were priced, I don't think
that this is the case in general, and certainly isn't the case for
these large, comprehensive sets. I suspect that the companies
determine what price the market will bear, without considering the
price per disc.

You might have been right a decade or so ago, but no longer.

That's not Universal's problem.

I'll resist the obvious snide remark....

When's the last time you purchased one of these large sets?

Compare the latest RCA Toscanini edition to the one issued in 1992.
The earlier issue required a bookcase of it's own to hold it and cost
$1200. The new issue could be had for $75 and takes up about 15 inches
of shelf space.

The Karajan 1960s set contains 82 CDs and takes up relatively little
space, less than a quarter of the space one would need for 82 jewel
cases. I like the fact that DG realized that collectors would like to
have all of the original album cover art along with the recordings
themselves. It's a nice touch for this series.

And the price of CD sets is no longer based on a per-CD price. I got
the K 1960 set for $180, or $2.20 per CD. Had they put twice as much
music on each disc, they would have probably just charged $4.40 per
disc.

CD sets from the beginning of the CD era were all bulky. That was to
make people feel they were getting something "big" for the $15-per-CD
price they were paying. Today, people want things in as compact of
packaging as possible. the K 1960 set is a space saver, as I'm sure
the 1970 set will be as well.

For MDT, right. But not for Presto, which charges by the item.

As a loyal Karajan fan, I've waited for years for his 1970s records to be reissued on CD using the original LP cover photos (many by Hoover Matthies) and "original image bit processing." Before I commit to purchasing this set, please tell me if Karajan's 1976 Tchaikovsky Fourth Symphony sounds like the original LP--minus, of course, the skips and scratches. Also, does the 1976 Beethoven Seventh sound better than its earlier remastering. These are just two examples where the previous remasterings are good but not definitive. The bottom line: Would the Maestro himself approve of these remasterings? Thanks in advance for your info.
