The NYT obit gives lots of space to the Symphony for Classical Orchestra
recorded by Bernstein in 1953 and Previn in 1986. I recall his sonatas
for piano were well-regarded in academic piano land.

Oh dear, another URL that has to be cut and pasted into one line. I
can hear the caterwauling already! :-)

Why didn't it work?
From Google groups:

Now from Google groups with the <>,

I have always liked the Symphony for Classical Orchestra, despite some complaints that it's too long and derivative of Stravinsky. Since I bought Bernstein's still-available Columbia LP around 1963. And Bernstein's version runs rings around Previn's snoozer as a performance. Even though Bernstein's 1953 "Columbia Symphony Orchestra" is audibly string instrument-undernourished.

That seems understandable, isn't that pretty much all he was known for?

Michael Boriskin recorded the the piano sonatas for New World, on a fine disc
which I primarily bought for the Irving Fine and Carl Ruggles works.
