And such as W. A. Mozart, Berlioz, and Jimi Hendrix, temporarily.

Elgar, Britten, Tippett, deservedly neglected? I'm no chauvinist (not
fully British by descent, upbringing or inclination) but I'm happy to
trumpet to anyone wth ears to hear that these three, closely followed
by Vaughan Williams and Holst, are very, very great composers.
By all means bash Britain - be my guest, it's a shithole - but please
don't be intellectually dishonest.

Regrettably, Britten and Tippett are not deservedly neglected, but they
should be.

If they had been anything but British, nobody would even know about them
now.

Ah, yes, and if Faure had been Swedish and Balakirev from the Japan,
etc....

There's an interesting thought. If Faur had lived in Sweden he
probably wouldn't have been influenced by Franck, and may have
influenced the Swedish turn-of-the-century composers. It's one of
those alternate universe things.

Yes, and interesting to hear his Nocturnes from a land of midnight
sun.
I'm still irritated to learn in this thread that the music of
Elgar,Vaughan
Williams,Alwyn,Britten,Walton,Bowen,Tippett,Bliss,Harty,Finzi is
really second-rate as I bought cd's of 5 or 6 of them in 2009 thinking
they were pretty good.Damn !

Indeed -- imagine if there had been a Danish composer who studied with
Berlioz. Oh, wait....

Just be glad its not third, fourth, or fifth rate. Come to think of it,
some of those names are worse than second rate. But none of them are
Beethoven, Wagner, Debussy, Bartok, or Stravinsky.
Doug McDonald
Yeah, well 2nd rate isn't third rate. Seems like Beacham complained on
one occasion, wondering why orchestras were importing 2rd rate
European conductors when there were plenty of 'us 2nd rate British
conductors' on the ground.

And if Ronald Binge had been Russian, he might have been purged.
You mean thank god none of them are another Wagner.
Stravinsky in the same breath as Debussy,Beethoven ?! And
Walton,Elgar,Britten,Vaughan Williams not in Stravinsky's league ?
Damn !
