Just wondering if this is still the norm among concert players.
Thanks.

I don't know about others but I think 45 minutes is enough in a 5 hour
day. At that, it's not just scales in that 45 minutes but a
combination with trill exercises in each key after the particular
scale, and speed bursts at the end of each scale as the last RH
combination, on i-m, and p-m.

Then maybe 30-45 minutes of etudes; the rest is repertoire. On days
when I have a concert or clubdate I will still practice for 1-2 hours.

45 min is best. one hour tops, and that much only if you are working
on strokes or some revision or addition to your technique. Do DGT except
for bursts, etc. The omission of arpeggio work, not the Giuliani crap but
arpeggi (scales of chord tones) like that for other instruments, has been
a serious mistake, you will find.

It is totally unnecessary to include slurs in that 45 min., and you
should not do so. Do my "power slurs" as directed, to grind, and etudes
to polish slurs. Carcassi op 60, for example, has quite a bit of good
work in making slurs sound good in specific pieces and situations. Books
of meaningless slurs or scales with slurs do nothing for that. They are a
total waste. daveA
