TP says, "No progress to report."

No shit. I do think you are on a better track. Go back a watch the
video I sent you.

With regards to the video referenced in this week's blog, I find the advice
at 6:10-6:20 to be every bit as useful as the part you mentioned from 3:20
to 3:55. Very much like typing speed... you don't expect to get there
without a very long-term process.

Usually, if you don't get there right away, you won't get there at
all. It will be interesting to see if Tom's damaged right hand can
recover. The trick is to play slowly and softly with a natural return
and then gradually increase speed until you can feel the "bad thing"
begin to happen. Then you back off and repeat the process. If you can
identify the exact instant where the "bad thing" begins to happen,
you might have a chance of killing it. At least in theory that's
true.

The guy in the video is almost completely full of shit, but he does
show the main idea of achieving speed at the very beginning. He does
have his fingers in mid range (he is incapable of explaining this
simple idea) , but he has no real idea of crossing the strings and he
recommends a bent wrist (but not too bent so it's probably not
damaging). Also, he does say it takes a long time to get there, and
you should give it three of four days. I liked that, because it's
true.

I'm glad you said that. I was typing 50 wpm in a few weeks of summer
school, and got up to 100 or so in a year or two, simply by going
through the normal course of typing reports, etc. Also, I have only
heard of one person who said it took him a long time to get the fast
rest strokes, the others all seemed to just figure it out rather
quickly.

I admit that in retrospect I wish I had removed the word "very"; that
particular word of emphasis was meant more as encouragement for Tom not to
fret about forcing things with daily metronome excercises and maybe getting
burned out on the results. A year or two of going through the normal course
of things sounds correct; it also qualifies to me as long-term, as
contrasted with several weeks being considered to be "near" -term. I'm
really liking that "normal course" expression too, you hit the nail right on
the head.

(blasted combination mail/newsreader... grumble)

I was agreeing with someone here, and you're taking me to task for it. I
don't get it.

I think I sounded differently than I intended. I wasn't trying to be a
prick. I was just curious about who you are and if you can already
play fast scales. Sorry.

Actually, to answer the question... I'm just a simple hobbyist who tries too
hard to break into the middle of the pack. I can curtail my participation
in this newsgroup if that is for the best.

Looks like we just crossed traffic in the last ten seconds!... anyway, no
worries. My scale speed is only fair to middling, and I have never
attempted IM-only patterns. I cheat with four-finger freestroke patterns
way too much.

If it works, it isn't cheating :)

Or as John Stockton said, "If you aren't cheating, you aren't trying
hard enough."

It would be better for this newsgroup if you participated more!

There's where you went wrong. Always remember to not to be too agreeable
when posting here. Of course, you shouldn't be too dis-agreeable here
because we really resent that too. If you're thinking about commenting
about a whole lot of things you can just forget about that, buster! Keep
your comments to a minimum and you should consider keeping your personal
opinions to yourself - the same goes for any kind of strong opinions.
Your best bet is to make sure anything you write is mostly murky, vague,
and ambiguous and can be seen as being many things to many people and
you'll get along just fine. You want your audience to be left in a
slightly bewildered state. Have fun!

You very well could be right about this - it's a very post-modern way of seeing all of these things. 👯😱🔫

There's only so much a one-trick pony has to contribute; and this particular
one-trick pony has but a cheap guitar and no recording equipment, and a bag
full of mediocre metaphors.

No worry! I'm an old dog learning new tricks here. What the heck! Just
have fun, both with the guitar and the forum. The posters are in fact
much more friendly than they seem to apprear, and one could actually
learn something :-)
Cheers,

Scary! You should read the short story "It's a Good Life" by Jerome
Bixby, which I happened to have just re-read before seeing your post.
