Putting together an all Segovian program...Did he perform the Sakura
Variations by Yocoh and or record it at any time? When?
Also, when was this written by Yocoh and is there any history between
Segovia and Yocoh or any relevant info on Segovia and this piece that
I can use?

Thanks!

Segovia never performed or recorded this. It's been made popular by
John Williams who recorded it three times and plays it a lot in his
worldwide concerts. Angel Romero plays it as well. Don't know when it
was written. Yocoh was born in 1925. There's no Segovia connection at
all, did you hear otherwise? Come to think of it I can't think of any
piece Segovia played that had a Japanese or Chinese theme or melody.

It's nice that you made the distinction bewteen *theme* and *melody*.
Perhaps you could talk about it further for us.

Thanks Denio. I haven't heard otherwise and thought this was the case.
Just wanted to make sure.

If memory serves, Yocoh is not a professional musican, he's an attorney.

Hi Stanley,

No reason for Segovia not to play Yocoh's music...a similar thing was
true of Duarte, no? and Segovia loved Duarte's English Suite.no?

Jack had in his studio a terrible guitar, which he used to leave on the
moquette. I never saw a case, for that instrument.
He used that tool for composing and teaching, and his guests - sooner or
later - had a moment of weakness, and played it. I did, unavoidably.
He told me that one day Segovia played a piece on that guitar, and - except
for a few minor slips caused by the reduced size of the fingerboard - he
sounded exactly like when playing his own guitar.

Sakura cannot be harmonized in three or four parts because the
penultimate note must form a strong dissonance, and the major
sixth is not a dissonance in Western music. Dissonance is
contextual.

He was quite a stickler for non-modern music having "correct"
harmony and counterpoint. This stemmed from deficiencies in
his musical education.

Far more people understand harmony and counterpoint, the "rules
of composition", than understand the purpose of studying them.

He removed most music from the scope of his repertoire because
he had to. That was neither a crime nor a mistake.

There was zero chance of his playing any version of Sakura.
