If you're a PC user you need a program called hjsplit (free to
download) which will join all the files together into one .zip file
which you can then unzip in the usual way.

And in case you're using a Mac, Split & Concat, also free, does the job
quite nicely.

Thank you! Is it necessary to download all 6 parts? I only want the
Carter, but when I downloaded only part one (I assume that's the
Carter), I get some error message that states it isn't a valid file.
(I'm on a Mac.)
Split files; see other download posts for Mac fix.

I think you will find that the problem is the extra ".zip" extension
at the end of that first file. I had to remove it (leaving ".001" at
the end), then Split & Concat de-concatinated it just fine (MacHacha
doubtless would do this also), so that Stuffit Expander could deal
with the resulting .zip archive.
And a hearty "thank you" to Alex for once again making available to
this group a very attractive program!

You don't need any extra software beyond what came with your Mac -
open up the Terminal, cd to the directory where you've saved the
files, type
cat Boulez* > Boulez.zip
and then use StuffIt to unzip that.

The work or the performance? I have not downloaded this one.
There was another perf of Interventions posted recently -- Levine,
Boston, Dec 2008.
Has anyone compared them?
I consider myself a complete beginner where Carter is concerned.
Great, thanks! I heard Boulez and the Staatskapelle play Mahler 6 in
concert about 10 years ago, this brings back memories and also makes
me think seriously about going down to New York to catch a few or at
least one of the concerts of the upcoming Mahler cycle with Boulez and
Barenboim at Carnegie Hall.
If you mean the piece: do you like other recent Carter?

You've heard some music on the net and you're now considering paying
to see some live music? Don't worry - the forward thinking recording
industry is on it, and will attempt to stop this as quickly as
possible:

About 18 months ago, Barenboim said in an interview that he would
learn + play Carter's Piano Concerto for the centenary concert last
Dec. However he got this 'Interventions' commission for piano + orch
instead. I heard the Boston broadcast and wasn't that impressed.
Sounded like a work by a gifted student.
What makes it sound like a work by a gifted student?

A very gifted student. It's obvious that, in his 100's, Mr. Carter is
not going to write another piece like the constituent movements of
Symphonia, let alone the 3rd String Quartet. He's obviously having
fun, but it strikes me as a very high level of fun indeed. We know
how unhappy Haydn and Stravinsky because when they were finally unable
to compose. Well, Carter told a British interviewer recently that he
couldn't stop composing because it's what made life interesting.

That was the world premiere also with Barenboim at the piano.
> Has anyone compared them?
I've got them both but haven't consciously compared them. It's not as
if I've listened carefully with the (as yet unpublished) score,
either. But I can't imagine that you'll go wrong with either
performance.

I enjoyed the Boston broadcast, while admittedly I didn't understand
everything about the music on first hearing. I hope Carter writes more
music like this; it does not seem like an insurmountable challenge
even to relatively unsophisticated listeners.

I would be astounded if Barenboim actually found the time to learn the
Piano Concerto. I think he must have said that before he looked at the
part.
