Kid Rock, Alabama, and Christina Aguilera all are very much like Petra,
and also very offensive.

Also, don't forget Mariah Carey, Pavorotti and Bela Fleck. Fleck in
particular has the Petra sound down pat. I think he may have been a
member of the group back in the mid seventies. (cough)

Why would you want to "come out" of Christian music? The best group that
sounds like Petra is Petra.

I have a friend who is trying to come out of Christian music. His
favorite band is Petra, and I want to recommend a good secular band that
has the same sound, but with more offensive lyrics. Any ideas?

I think you should personally go with U2. They're a nice gateway between christian and secular that if you're looking for a more secular sound...you can go wtih them. I don't know if they're more offensive though.

HTH :),

I'm not so sure Pavarottia sounds like Petra.
He does sound kind of like Christina Aguilera, which makes me think maybe
she shouldn't be included in the list either.

I'm quite surprised that neither of you mentioned such obvious Petra sound-
alikes as The Velvet Underground, Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, and
Throbbing Gristle. Oh, and of course, Bruce Cockburn.

Shania Twain, Leanne Rimes, Raffi are similar, with more contemporary sounds,
and deeper lyrics, possibly bringing your friend closer to God than Petra's
lyrics could hope to do. I think the first 2 I mentioned are on a similar
intellectual par, and the third, Raffi, would intellectually stretch your pal's
mind. Other than that, perhaps just finding a band whose members had great
toupees would be the ticket, as the music couldn't possibly be that crucial:
Afghan Wigs (?)! Roy Clark, Journey, and BoxCar Willie- oh he's dead...
something else in common with Petra (fied)...

Just kidding. Love this thread, especially the serious resonses (like mine!)
