Hi,

I am new to NEWS.

I was wondering, is there an interest in creating
a subgroup for worship music?

Or is there already a group for this under another name?

I have made a few interesting contacts with other worship leaders here
on rmc. And at times, that support is invaluable. But I have to admit
reading rmc is kind of like going to Sears: way too much for what I
really want.

My interest in a subgroup for worship music would be more in making and
doing, than typical rmc fare.

What do you envision?

> Or is there already a group for this under another name?

I wish there was.

One of the more rewarding choices I've made on this newsgroup is to
join the listserv < music4...@uclink.berkeley.edu >. It's not
intended for worship music, but it now and again gets around to
interesting support and discussion on worship topics. And, it's alot
more efficient than wading through the dross on rmc.

Please keep in touch if you hear of a worship newsgroup.

There was talk about creating rec.music.christian.worship to cater for those
who are interested in P&W type music. However, the response from the r.m.c
was not exactly overwhelming and some even predicted that the traffic for
r.m.c.worship will be slow.

Someone from the group (can't remember this name) was going to officially
request the startup of r.m.c.w but nothing came through. There was little
talk about P&W newsgroup ever since then (mid-1993?).

I for one, would be interested in such a group as I am a musician in
my church and also worship lead in my cell group.

Would be a change in discussion, rather than the usual CCM pop stars
chit-chat.

Yes, there was some guy who worked on getting an official
r.m.c.p.w. group. I remember because I posted the RFD in
some of the alt.* groups (I did this as a favor, I wasn't
particularly motivated one way or the other). Two RFD's
went out, I believe, and then the guy (from Philly, I think
he was .. Manuel something) sent out a message saying
"forget it for now, I'll try again in the fall." This was
sometime in April/May/June of last year, and I've never
heard from him since. I think there was a lot of opposition
to an r.m.c.p.w. within r.m.c. Don't ask me why - I could
never figure it out.

I'd be very interested in a group like this. Or even E-mail discussion.
Anyone else interested?

The reason for the internal opposition was that people did not want to view
two different newsgroups. Requests have been made to create rmcw; followed by
a few ditto's. But I have seen few posts actually talking about the issues
of worship music. There was a few threads for a while, but they seemed to have
all died away.

A while back someone came up with the idea of prefixing all subjects appropriate
headers such as
PW: Praise & Worship
ALT:Alternative
CCM:That slow stuff :)
AMY:Our favorite contraversy/non-contraversy
etc...
This never happened and thus we all must wade through posts that may not even
directly relate to music (or indirectly for that matter).

All in all, if people have stuff to post about worship then do so. I would be
interested for sure.

ObMusicDisc:
I'm always looking for new music styles to use as part of leading worship. One
style that I've always loved is Black Gospel, but how does one play this kind of music
on the acoustic guitar? Any ideas? Anyone I should listen too? When I play it,
it usually comes out so ... well ... white. :)

Unfortunately I've noticed the same thing. When leading Black Gospel stuff
(usually in small group Bible studies) I go a capella!

I'd be interested in such a group. I direct a small choir for
a small Lutheran church.

Last spring there was a lot of discussion about creating
a rec.music.christian.worship or rec.music.christian.praise
group. I think the proposal suddenly got put on hold when
the proposer realized that setting the wheels in motion at
that point would cause the voting to take place in the dead
zone of summer when fewer interested readers and voters would
be around. Then nobody raised the issue again in the fall,
and here we are today.

Does anyone have a copy of the charter draft that was cooked up
last year for what, at the last, was going to be called
rec.music.christian.worship?

The only thing I can think of is to check out Larry Howard. He's kind of
Bluesy (?). I think you'll be hard to pressed to get a Black Gospel sound
out of an acoustic guitar. Traditionally, you would need a piano and some
tamborines! ;-)

Hope you work it out!

Think I'll jump in this one...I'm a guitarist who plays in our church choir,
Men's Fellowship Praise Ministry and with of group called Sounds Of Glory.
I'll just say this, it's not the instrument your playing (i.e. acoustic
guitar), it's the way or style in which you play it. Music has different kinds
of styles originating from different cultures, simply put. I've done it where
it doesn't sound "so ... well ... white. :)"...it's all in the style, just as
the music in my church which is mostly "Black Gospel" with some anthems mixed
in, I grew up in The Presbyterian church where the praise & worship is totally
different. Anyway, my $0.02.

God Bless

There's a lot of black gospel music featuring the acoustic guitar. Nothing
against Larry Howard, but if you're going to try to play that style of
music then you might as well go back to the people that Larry tries
to copy - folks like Rev. Gary Davis and Blind Willie Johnson and
the Mississippi Sheiks.

Forget about finding it in your local gospel book/music store. Find
a good music store with a good blues section and have at it. It's
some of the most sanctified music you'll ever want to hear.

Can't think of any Gospel act who would have performed with acoustic
guitar backing, but you might be able to get some kind of idea if you
got hold of the longform video "Past To Present" by a ska group called
Fishbone. They're no Gospel group by any means, but the very last
thing on the video they go into an extended jam of a gospel-styled
song called "Everyday Sunshine" with just an acoustic guitar and six
people singing.

BUT don't hold me responsible for possible offensive material on the
tape.
