Being fairly new to Christian music I'm struggling a little bit
finding artists that appeal to me, and I'm hoping you
rec.music.christian readers can give me some suggestions. First, I can
tell you that I *don't* care for rock, alternative, or gospel music
(although I certainly appreciate all of the artists in these
categories; it's just not my thing). I guess the category I prefer is
probably called pop, particularly leaning towards praise and worship
music. Some of the artists I like are Twila Paris (far and away my
favorite), Susan Ashton, Kim Hill, Amy Grant, Jaci Velasquez, Cindy
Morgan, Maire Brennan, Sandi Patty, Sara Paulson (you may notice
something in common about all of these artists :-)). I also tend to
prefer compilation CDs for some reason, e.g., "Streams", "City on a
Hill", "My Utmost For His Highest", "Listen To Our Hearts", "WOW...",
etc. Plus, I love collections of praise songs/choruses. And I love the
old traditional hymns ("Fairest Lord Jesus", "He Leadeth Me", "Blessed
Assurance", "Crown Him With Many Crowns", etc).
Recently I recorded a cassette containing a bunch of my favorite songs
from my wife's CD collection. Perhaps looking at this list will give
you guys an idea of my tastes :
"Wonderful, Merciful Savior", Susan Ashton
"On My Knees", Jaci Velasquez
"In Heaven's Eyes", Sandi Patty
"Testify to Love", Wynonna or Avalon
"My Life Is In Your Hands", Kathy Troccoli
"Shout to the Lord", Darlene Zschech (sp? better yet, pronunciation?)
"My Deliverer", Ragamuffin Band
"In You Alone", Kim Hill
"Mary Did You Know", Kathy Mattea
"Lamb of God", Eden's Bridge or Twila Paris
"Stand", Susan Ashton
"Song of Reconciliation", Ashton, Dente, Becker
"Angels", Christine Dente
"I Will Listen", Twila Paris
"Redeemer", Nicole C. Mullen
"Where There is Faith", 4Him
"He's Alive", Don Francisco
"I Pledge Allegiance To the Lamb", Ray Boltz
"Shine on Us", Phillips, Craig, & Dean
And, as I mentioned, I'm also a country music fan, so the ideal thing
is when the two can be mixed together. Some examples are Cynthia
Clawson's "River of Memories", the Cox Family's "I Know Who Holds
Tomorrow", and the "Amazing Grace" compilations.
Finally, I also enjoy New Age music (e.g, Yanni - no groans, please)
and classical music, so I enjoy songs with a lush orchestral
background (even if it's overdone :-)).
So, I'm looking for suggestions. Hope this is not too broad or too
narrow of a request.

From your list, which I snipped, you don't seem to be a pop fan. You're more
into what's termed "inspirational." Your list is mostly slow, dramatic type
numbers. You need to go back a few years and check out Michael English's
self-titled solo project. The song's "In Christ Alone" and "Mary, Did You
Know?" would be right down your alley. Other suggestions of this type
include:
Steve Green
Larnelle Harris, although some of his stuff borders on gospel
CeCe Winans, you should like _Alone In His Presence_ where she does mostly
hymns
Greg Long
David Robertson
Early stuff by Crystal Lewis like her hymns project

In this vein I think you'd enjoy some Southern Gospel artists. I definitely
suggest you check out Jeff and Sheri Easter. Their production is very close
to what you'd hear on mainstream country radio. A similar suggestion is
Karen Peck and New River. The Martins and Sierra also blend country with pop
elements. You might enjoy The Ruppes, also.
A lot of people like Walt Mills, but the production quality of his stuff
isn't quite up to the level of my other suggestions. If that doesn't matter
to you, you might want to check out his double CD Collection.

Get the new Michael W. Smith instrumental project called _Freedom_ and/or
both of his Christmas CDs. In fact, there are dozens of Christmas recordings
that have overdone orchestra. Janet Paschal's is fairly good. I don't care
much for Steven Curtis Chapman's Christmas CD, but you'd like his _Great
Adventure_ recording with its orchestral prologue and slightly country
slant.
