The Dardanelles are a Newfoundland celtic folk powerhouse
who are Tom Power on guitar and banjo, Matthew Byrne on
vocals, bouzouki and guitar, Emilia Bartellas on fiddle
and viola, Richard Klaas on bodhran and percussion,
and Aaron Collis on button accordion, whistles and
mandolin,
Their music is strongly rooted in Newfoundland and
most of the songs and tunes on their CDs have an
origin in Newfoundland and/or have been sung or
played in Newfoundland for a long time. So they
don't do standard Irish pub tunes/songs.
Their second CD The Eastern Light is a mix of
rousing instrumental doubles, reels, singles,
ballads featuring Matthew Byrne's fine voice,
and a shanty with all their friends joining in.
The CD was produced by John Doyle.
I highly recommend this CD and their live show.
They have a web site
http://thedardanelles.com
They are named after the shortest street in
St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.
