Could someone please point me to a source for the original (albeit
translated) lyrics to the Irish ballad, "The Patriot Game?" The only
version I've ever heard was by a bunch of Tax Protesters.

Many thanks,

The song is not translated, but was written by Dominic Behan (Brendan's brother). It is in a
number of books. But the "horse's mouth", so to speak is:

Ireland Sings
Dominic Behan
ISBN 0-8256-9341-1

The song is seldom sung as written. The section on DeValera and on the police are often
taken out.

Good Luck.

Rob,

The Patriot Game is by Domenic Behan ... brother of Brendan Behan the famous
Irish writer.

Regards, Mick.

Would anybody know what year "Patriot Game" was written and the
appropriate publishing information. I have tried to locate "Ireland
Sings"but local libraries don't seem to have it listed.

Thanx!

Try the Judy Collins album "Whales and Nightengales" which is probably
still easy to find. It has the song "The Patriot Game". "The Patriot
Game" was probably the song Bob Dylan was, shall we say, parodying when
he wrote "God on Our Side". Some use less polite words than parody.

I remember hearing "Patriot Game" by the Kingston Trio back in the 60s.
I'd sure like to find that album again, but I haven't even seen it in the
old record stores. Geez... I didn't realize how long ago that was!

I am getting these lyrics from 'The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem- In
person at Carnegie hall. It is the fifth track on the disc and I believe
it is sung by Liam Clancy.

Come all you young rebels, and list while I sing
For the love of one's country is a terrible thing.
It banishes fear with the speed of a flame
and it makes us all part of the Patriot Game.

My name is O'Hanlon and I've just gone 16.
My home is in Monaghan where I was weened
I've learned all my life cruel and England to blame
and so I am part of the Patriot Game

It's barely two years since I wandered away
with a local battalion of the bold IRA
I'd read of our heroes and wanted the same
to play out my part in the Patriot Game.

This island of ours has for long been half free
Six counties are under John Bull's tyrrany.
So I gave up my boyhood to drill and to train
To play my own part in the Patriot Game.

And now as I lie here, my body all holes,
I think of those traitors who bargained and sold.
I wish that my rifle had given the same,
To those quislings who sold out the Patriot Game.

Hope this helps, if not, listen to the album anyway. It's fantastic.

There's also a version of this on Liam Clancy's 1965 solo album. I think
that it may have one more verse, but I'm not sure.

Well, I looked at the '65 album and sure enough, there it was song
number 12. I wrote the lyrics down in case anyone is interested:

They told me how Connolly was shot in the chair
His wounds from the battle all bloody and bare.
His fine body twisted, all battered and lame
They soon made him part of the Patriot Game.

You can get the Kingston Trio version of "The Patriot Game" on a current
album, actually. It's on "The Kingston Trio - The Capitol Collector's
Series", Capitol CDP 7927102. It's a compilation of all the Trio's
singles that were released by Capitol, which means it's basically a
greatest hits album, although I'm not sure "The Patriot Game" qualifies.
(Even more peculiar is the Kingston Trio version of "Seasons in the
Sun"!!!)

I don't think the original album "The Patriot Game" was released on is
available, though. Capitol was doing a reprint series of the old Kingston
Trio albums, but stopped after the first 8. Sigh!

Too bad the original isn't around. I've looked in about 10 different old
record stores and have seen every single KT album but that one. But
thanks for the tip! A couple of friends and I used to sit around with a
homebuilt stereo amp system (while in high school) and really get off on
the super sound and separation of those albums. Patriot Game was
especially neat, but I'm wondering if they had the same lyrics that have
been posted here...

I believe John Allen Cameron (Cape Breton) also did a version on one of
his old albums...
I haven't seen anything from him recently.
