What Odds, let's play a few tunes. Wanda Crocker, Gerry Strong,
Jean Hewson and Rick West are all long-time contributors to the
Newfoundlandtraditional music scene. Wanda was a member of
seminal folk band Barkin' Kettle in the 80's, as well asthe
bands TheProdigal Daughters and the Sub-Sisters. Wanda took a
long hiatus from performingbut luckily forus, she hasbrought
her tremendous fiddle and mandolintalents back to local stages.
Gerry (flute, whistle) is well known for his work with Tickle
Harbour and a Crowd of Bold Sharemen and his recent retirement
from Eastern Health has enabled him to refocus his energies on
performing, touring and promoting his recent CD, Velvet in the
Wind. Jean Hewson sings and plays guitar. She tours primarily
with long-time musical partner, fiddler Christina Smith, but
will back up anyone who will put up with her bad jokes and
shenanigans. She is also the proprietor of Black Cat Music; a
concert promotion business devoted to presenting quality
traditional entertainment. Along with Christina and Jean,
Rick (bodhran) has played with Frank Maher's band, Mahers
Bahers, since 1999 and is a regular at weekly sessions at the
Rocket Food and Bakery and O'Reilly's Pub. All have served as
session musicians for numerous albums produced in Newfoundland
and elsewhere.
