We have released recordings from the Newport Archive, starting with three
amazing performances from the 1959 Jazz Festival.
Don't miss the great Count Basie & His Orchestra, who play a swinging set
with steamrolling momentum. Next give a listen to the expressive voice of
Dakota Staton; although not as widely known, this sassy performer
definitely gives Ella Fitzgerald a run for her money. For some harder bop,
check out the charismatic Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers. These shows
are now the oldest on the site but among the best sounding. All three are
available for free streaming and for downloads.
Be sure to return on Tuesday, when we will release many more shows from the
1959 festival!
