unfortunately, i'm going to miss bluesfest this year in chicago.
however, i will be there for the 4th of july weekend. i've never been
there for the 4th of july - are there any special events (concerts,
festivities etc.) which normally occur in downtown chicago?

They usually have fireworks at Grant Park on July 3rd (from what I
can remember) along with about 1.2 million people and the Chicago
Symphony Orchestra at the Hatch Shell. Also July 3rd is the last day
of the Taste of Chicago where there are about 150 booths manned by
Chicago area restaurants and several venues where music is being
performed. This goes on all day for about a week leading up to the 3rd.

But I haven't lived there for a while so things might have changed...

The Taste will be extended this year an extra day to include the 4th.

There is a "Hatch Shell" on the Boston Esplanade. Are you sure that
the Grant Park bandshell has this name also?

You are correct, sir!! I got them confused (I used to live in Boston also).
It is actually the Petrillo Band Shell.

No, it's simply called the "Band Shell" . Also, its not the Chicago
Symphony Orchestra. But, nonetheless, a very good civic orchestra.

I'm sure he meant the Petrillo Band Shell. It's hard to miss when you
reach Grant Park -- it's the big shell with thousands of people in front of it.
