Incorrect - I'm sure the opposite is true. The Mingus is a 1990 CD release
of a 1964 Copenhagen performance. To my knowledge, there is no previous
issue.

It was never issued on vinyl. I believe (and Brian Priestley's discography
supports this, as he does not even list the recording as of 1982 when his
book was published) that the Moon CD is the first release of this music.
This is one of many recordings from the spring 1964 tour. The music was
privately recorded (by an amateur, and the sound reflects that), and
released on the bootleg Moon label. If you've heard any of the many
recordings released from this tour, you know what to expect.

Moon is a bootleg label? I've only got one CD of theirs, "Broken Shadows"
by Ornette. The sound is also dismal (it sounds like it was recorded on a
$19.95 plastic dictation cassette machine), thus ruining what was clearly
an exciting set. I'll avoid the Mingus release, then (luckily, there are
plenty of other recordings of that 1964 band with sonics that are just
fine).

you can search e-bay ... someone in tokyo is selling a copy on LP. There is
also a photograph. I've seen several instances where the LP has been
mentioned. I do not yet know when that LP was first issued. As I said, *so
I hear*, in the first post. I really don't know for sure which was named
for which. I've only *heard* somewhere that Morrison borrowed the title
from this record.
if you get back to this post in time, here's the link:

I'd say there aren't a whole lot of these floating around, as noone seems to
really know much about this LP.

OK, I stand corrected, at least partially. It was issued on LP, around the
same time as the CD (1990). The cover shown in the Ebay listing is the same
as the CD. Moon seems to have come into existence right at the end of the
LP era. Anyway, I stand by my assertion that Morrison's album (1968)
predates Mingus's (c. 1990).

There are concurrent issues, though. Both Landscape LS2-905, "Charlie
Mingus Sextet / Live in Copenhagen 1964" and Bandstand BDCD 1524,
"Charles Mingus / Mediations On Integration" have tracks from the
April 14 Copenhagen concert.

In my experience, Landscape takes the cake for worst sound on these
European boots. The Moon is middling poor. Unfortunately, the
Landscape is a bit more complete. "Astral Weeks" has "Mediations" and
"Fables of Faubus". The Landscape also includes "AT FW USA" and
"Orange Was the Color of Her Dress The Blue Silk". The Bandstand disk
has only "Mediations" plus tracks from the April 13 Stockholm concert.
Pass if you like but when you get into it, the various versions of the
key tracks from this tour - "Mediations", "Faubus", "So Long Eric",
etc. - are different and the differences are both instructive and
exciting. A completist project to these ears.

I know--I'm of two minds here: that was one of the greatest jazz groups
of the past half-century, and I'd like to hear every note they ever
played; but I'm also a sound fanatic, and lousy recordings make me grind
my teeth in frustration. I used to have a two-LP set from that '64 tour
that was recorded (if I remember right) in Munich--the recording wasn't
all that bad, but I've never come across it on a CD. Nearly 10 years
after I sold my record collection, I can't remember what label it was on;
not one of the majors, and it might have been a bootleg. It had a white
cover with an African-themed painting on it. Oh, well, so I don't have
total recall...

I hear you. Have a bit of that affliction myself.

Probably the Ulysse Musique / East Coasting 2-fer of the April 10
Amsterdam concert, "Charles Mingus Sextet / Concertgebouw Amsterdam /
April 10th 1964", AROC 50506/507. Kind of Picasso cum African
painting in the middle of a white cover. It was reissued on 2-cd's.
The combined digital issue has an extra track, a 30 minute version of
"Fables of Faubus". Ulysse Musique was also involved in a 3-lp box
that has all of the tracks including Faubus. The box is DIW-25023-5,
"Charles Mingus / In Amersterdam 1964". The cd actually may be a
pickup of this box since "Faubus" is split as it is on the vinyl.

Thanks, Ed--that sounds like the one (I don't know why I was thinking
of Munich). I didn't know it had been reissued on CD; time to do a little
detective work and see if I can track it down.

Good luck hunting, T.C. FYI, the cd's have the same cover as the
album.
