I can't think of any Rock albums that are considered great by most to
be totally bad, but there are some artists whose overall work has
been(IMHO) over-rated. Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, and Grateful Dead
come to mind. I know I have others, just can't remember right now.
That doesn't mean that I dislike their albums, only that I think there
was too much ado about their songs.

I've never gotten U2. To me they've always sounded like a good
approximation of a good rock band. Like they've studied all the right
influences and know all the right moves and produce professional level
music with some degree of skill, but it still sounds received . And
even though Bono has all the right political causes, I mean, being
against AIDS in Africa, right on, he still comes across as a self-
absorbed jerk.

He certainly comes across that way. He is about as holier-than-thou &
touchy-feely as a self-centered rock star can get. But the
musicianship in the band is well beyond "some degree of skill" -- it's
practically incomparable relative to the rest of mainstream rock.

Coldplay, Radiohead, Oasis, REM, Guns n Roses, Nirvana, Metallica,
Springsteen E-Street Band, The Police. You’re saying U2 towers above
all of them as musicians.

very similar to REM, nirvana. very effectively simplistic and cohesive music with outstanding vocals on top. police and radiohead and to some degree coldplay and oasis have plenty of both with police definitely way ahead of the curve musically. for me, the others you list are in the 'if you can't say something nice' category.

I have to disagree concerning the Police. They may have played some
simple sounding music, but having watch them from way up close once,
my opinion is that all three of them were extremely accomplished
musicians, possibly even virtuoso level.

did you miss that bit? yes, all three a extremely accomplished musicians who made some deceptively simple sounding music. it actually takes a lot of musical self confidence to use space as an instrument the way they did. can't say enough about copeland's drumming and summers's guitar voicing.

i can't win. i don't like the new google groups, but it's all i can use at work.
