Everything is perfect about this. The arrangement is perfect and the
song has a menacing feel to it. The bass is what interests me the
most, but the sax solo in the middle is excellent too. I think this
song might have inspired Pink Floyd's Money.
========
What about Taxman?
"Minuature" George Martin's Intro for America's "Holiday Album" is
nice. No research here just off the top of me head
nope
Don't know about best ever, though it's a fne tune.
Off the top of my head, Genesis' Dance on a Volcano opened up _A Trick
of the Tail_ very nicely, particularly because it was the first listen
to Collins replacing Gabriel.
DT
I thought the black shrink-wrap on the limited edition WYWH album that I
picked up in The Netherlands was pretty good. Ii opened up beautifully
which in turn allowed me to reseal it back up again and keep it in mint
condition.
Damn fine opener!!
There are many examples of a super album opener.
'BLACK DOG' by Led Zeppelin (on Led Zep IV) jumps out at me. Turn it up!
P-Dub: Hey mama, said the way you move, gonna make me sweat, gonna make
me groove...
Oh, look, Raja's discovered soul music.
Actually this came into my mind immediately after I posted.
All excellent. Led Zeppelin always seemed to have crushing album
openers. Good Times Bad Times, Whole Lotta Love, Immigrant Song, Black
Dog, The Song Remains The Same, Custard Pie are excellent album
openers.
Is this really soul??????? more like a mix of funk, rock, jazz and
soul.
Not even The Spinal Tap could top that ;-)
I use a small knife i find it "best"
oh lookie raja found a new play pal
So if you're coupling a great album with a great album... Taxman on
Revolver.
Revolver's the greatest album ever.
I think my favorite music from Mayfield's canon would be the extended
coda of Move On Up. Masterful stuff.
Here are other great openers from great albums --
Don McLean - American Pie
Yes - Roundabout
Black Sabbath - War Pigs
Of course, there are many lesser albums that also have great openers.
You got to be fucking kidding me. Except say Out On the Tiles, Friends
and Hats Off To Roy Harper which are good but not spectacular, every
other song on the albums is on target.
>
> So if you're coupling a great album with a great album... Taxman on
> Revolver.
>
> Revolver's the greatest album ever.
LOL, no. I think it has several duds.
I hate American Pie but the other two I like a lot and are great
openers. Yes also seemed to have flamboyant opening songs - Beyond And
Before, No Opportunity Necessary No Experience Needed, Yours Is No
Disgrace, Roundabout etc. Never thought about that!
Led Zep wins again.
I like Black Dog as best opener, but can't argue with this one.
P-Dub: Does anyone remember Archilles' Last Stand?
Led Zeppelin sucks. They're boring, they're thieves who made some
great music (that they stole) boring. Jimmy Page is a very good
session guitarist. All of the great Yardbirds solos were done by
either Clapton or Beck. Robert Plant's voice is annoying. I suppose if
you're a stoned 14 year old boy that they could be entertaining.
LOL... You suck, mate.
Best post. EVER.

Grupedski, why not throw some of your drama QUEEN tantrums. Those were
funny.
I guess you might prefer QUEEN, or may be you prefer being a
QUEEEEEEEEEEEEEN.
You wish.
sounds like a typical day at Guitar Center. "I just want to try out
this Les Paul".
I don't think they're shit, but I do think they're overrated.
Particulary 1 and 2..3 is OK in places..4 is a cracking album as is
HOTH...PG is middling (Kasmir's good)..Prescence is not that great
(save for ALS)..and ITTOD is pretty weak (save for ITE)...
They're OK.
Danny
Funny... I feel the same about the Beatles.
The record buying public has spoken: The Beatles and Elvis
have sold tons more recordings than Zeppelin. Therefore,
there is no way the Beatles are overrated.
Beatles and Elvis sales are inflated with their singles sales. Get rid
of the singles sales and Zeppelin might have sold more in album sales.
But anyway, what has sales got to do with who is overrated or not.
I just explained it. The record buying public prefers to own Beatles
albums over Zeppelin albums. Opinions don't count. Record
sales do.
Led Zeppelin OWNED the 70s for rock. They did what many legendary
British bands did -- raped the black blues, and put their own 'style' on
it. And we all loved it, and ate it up.
LZ wrote great songs, performed them with maximum energy, and sold a
shitload of records. These guys are the richest bastards that ever
rocked and rolled.
The biggest problem with them is that their stuff was highly overplayed
by AM and FM radio stations from the 70s until today. And - like with
many other bands - there's a very limited list of songs that are played
over and over and over and over again. There are many other songs that
do not appear on the radio that are excellent.
They actually are a very talented band.
And I f'n LOVE PRESENCE. Recorded in 6 days. Great f'n guitar. Great
drums. Great everything. Every f'n note.
P-Dub: Nobody's fault but mine.
Queen was excellent too. Don't even start. Brian May is among the
greatest guitar slingers evah. And Queen's songwriting was top notch.
Best. Harmonies. Ever.
P-Dub: Killer Queen is killer.
NFBM is a goody from Prescence I agree..but by and large they weren't
the Beatles.
Dany
Textbook Raja goalpost shifting.
1) Other artists sold more records than Led Zepplin.
2) But Led Zepplin weren't a singles band.
3) So singles don't count.
4) Now, Led Zepplin *might* have sold more albums.
Well - nobody is as good as the Beatles. That's a given. I say the best
band of all time is the Beatles. Without the Beatles, none of these
other bands would have happened.
But the GREATEST is the Rolling Stones. 49 years at the top!
Led Zep is up there too.
P-Dub: And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make.
Bullshit.
I like Queen. They made average albums but wrote a ton of hit songs. I
would take them over the overhyped Beach Boys any day.
And the Beatles weren't Zeppelin. Why do we have to always compare
both?
Disagree. I consider three bands better than the Beatles. And you know
who!
I appreciate that you like the band. But is very shallow analysis of a
band which dabbled in all sorts of music like Indian music, Latin
music, Reggae, Funk, Country, Folk etc. Many of their best songs are
acoustic.
>

Doubt it. Beatles have to be richer than them.
>
> The biggest problem with them is that their stuff was highly overplayed
Wrong. Depends upon which station you listen to. In Houston we have
two rock stations and they seem to play a variety of Zeppelin songs. I
think they have played every Zeppelin song from their first five
albums (except the instrumental ones) and those two covers on LZ I.
> by AM and FM radio stations from the 70s until today. And - like with
> many other bands - there's a very limited list of songs that are played
Wrong, wrong and completely wrong. Zeppelin have way too many songs
that were hits and played on radio. Compare that to The Who. They have
about 10 songs which you will hear on radio.
> over and over and over and over again. There are many other songs that
> do not appear on the radio that are excellent.
Very few of their excellent songs do not get played - Hey Hey What Can
I Do and Travelling Riverside Blues for example. But I hear all their
best songs from their eight studio albums quite often.
>
> They actually are a very talented band.
>

Presence is my least favorite album of theirs. But it is still good.
They never made a bad album just like The Beatles. The only difference
I find between them and The Beatles and the Beatles recorded way too
many songs in their albums. There is not a single Beatles album in
which I do not skip 3 songs or more.
but wait! Just seconds ago...seconds!...you said "Why do we have to
always compare
both?"
Yeah I said that because this thread had nothing to do with Zeppelin.
It was about Curtis Mayfield - remember Curtis? And some a-hole
hijacked it to a Beatles vs Zeppelin bitchfest as usual. I think that
a-hole was you.
That has nothing to do with anything. With most groups, I
skip all songs except for 3 songs (If I can even find 3 songs
by a group I like...which is difficult except for Beatles music.
What does that even mean? I was stating my opinion
>With most groups, I
> skip all songs except for 3 songs (If I can even find 3 songs
> by a group I like...which is difficult except for Beatles music.
Then you clearly haven't heard much music.
I'm almost 20 years older than you, and it's hard for me
to find 3 songs in the past 20 years that I like. I'm
not talking about the time span you usually discuss.
I meant to say "3 songs per album by a band"
you do know we can re-read the thread, right? I responded to this
bit....

so do you want to stick with your version that I hijacked the thread?
Let's see...you said:
"And some a-hole hijacked it to a Beatles vs Zeppelin bitchfest as
usual."
and we can easily see who that was.
> 4) Now, Led Zepplin *might* have sold more albums.
If US album sales are any indication, they didn't:
http://www.sfmission.com/famous/top_music_artists.htm
Beatles: 164.5 million albums
Led Zeppelin: 106.0 million albums
My comment was on the album Revolver. It had nothing to do with
Zeppelin. I do like the album Revolver but it has several songs I do
not like (Taxman, Love You To, Here There Everywhere, I Want To Tell
You, Tomorrow Never Knows) . You immediately gave a knee-jerk reaction
and slammed Zeppelin. That was uncalled for. I have never slammed the
Beatles. I have consistently maintained but they made good albums but
always had 3-4 duds or more per album.
Thats why I say you haven't heard many songs from the past 20 years.
Age has nothing to do with how much of music one hears. I could be 16
and have heard more than someone aged 60.
In my entire life, I generally haven't found more than about 3 songs
per LP, that I liked, except for the Beatles.
> Age has nothing to do with how much of music one hears. I could be 16

Maybe or maybe not. I wouldn't want to count all those hours.
:-)
I like all the songs on Revolver, though I dislike the way Taxman
was recorded with the drums.
This morning, I was going to make the exact same point that you have
made, but I didn't see any point in doing so, as Raja clearly doesn't
have much self-awareness or consistency in what he says - he just blurts
out post after post with little or no thought - contradicting himself at
every turn. And when you try and point out his inconsistencies, he
either ignores it, or just tries to change the goalposts again (see below).

Yep. Again. He wonders why people have to compare the Beatles with Led
Zepplin, then in the next breath he compares the Beatles to Led Zepplin.
Then when challenged about it, he makes a completely irrelevant remark
about the thread being hijacked.
It is only in your opinion little boy. And you know what your
opinion means around here.
raja you got fucking PWNED!!!

"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"
You are a funny guy
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Tull's Thick as a Brick -- that
would be cheating, I guess.
Here are yet a few more great openers --
Nick Cave - The Mercy Seat
The Clash - London Calling
Alice Cooper - School's Out
Doors - Road House Blues
Eno /Byrne - America is Waiting
Ministry - N.W.O.
Leon Russell - Tight Rope
Sisters of Mercy - Black Planet
Stranglers - Midnight Summer Dream
great choice, I was going to say that one.
I also like Rock Bottom as the opening song on the album Pattern
Disruptive.
Speaking of taking the piss out of someone, lets examine the person known as

Bradley Manning aka
Rijman Nakkechski aka Azus aka Adolphi aka Aldophi (you can do a search on

of these posts readily available.

from 9-9-2009 please note the plural of safes. Also note that gary has
said he travelled the globe because he worked for a travel agency. An
obvious lie.

20+ years ago... I used to break into safes for a living.... Commercial

I travelled the globe with my ill gotten gains... I lived a dream that most

20+ years ago I appeared before a Judge and the total sum of what I was
charged with stealing was 218 thousand pounds..... (US$300,000+). Can you

The above post is interesting, since gary DID post his address, and provide

gary also posted his grandmothers address, and picture of her home, which
happens to be a mobile home.

Since gary has proven himself to be a liar and a shit stirrer, and he does
go on about
the most irrelevant things, he must be describing his self. And don't
racists think they are better than other people? Thats gary woodhouse.
He is also a bully, by any definition of the word.
And now to the base cause for gary's actions, his hatefulness, his lying,
his tendency to be a BULLY, in his own words. He has gone on about

All of these statements were made by gary woodhouse over the last several
years. You can judge for yourself what type person he really is.
More recently, gary woodhouse attempted to fake his suicide on the internet
back in May of 2010. Unfortunately, it was a hoax.
gary resides in the marina district of Brighton, UK, however he has recently
claimed he has moved. gary was also involved in the bootleg music buisness,
claims to have a web design buisness, and is involved in making cartoons,
and documentraries. No evidence of this has been found, ever, except for
cartoons he makes and posts to You Tube, using stolen music.
It further occurs to me that Mayfield's "Move On Up" has something in
common with Sabbath's Wheels of Confusion -- each is an excellent song
of perhaps four minutes' duration, coupled with an instrumental coda
of approximately equal duration that, in my opinion, is even more
musically compelling than the material developed in the (ostensibly)
primary section of the work.
led zeppelin are thieves and Page is a child mollester and you know it
