Was recently watching some Jodorowsky movies, El Topo, The Holy Mountain
from the 70s.
Reading on the web, apparently John was particularly taken with El Topop
and then contributed in some way, financially to Jodorowsky's next
movie, The Holy Mountain from 1976, which is presented by Allen Klein in
the credits. The appeal of Jodorowsky to John and Yoko seems quite obvious.
On the commentary to The Holy Mountain Jodorowsky says that he gave the
script to George Harrison, who liked the script, and was considered for
one of the parts in the movie. It would have been an interesting follow
up to George's image and career after the 60s. The reason George
decided not to do it was because of one scene that the director would
not remove, where he would have had to appear nude.

1968 or 1969, which I didn't save, and wish I had. It either appeared
in one of the New York dailies, or was in one of those weekend
newspaper magazines like "Parade".
I'm paraphrasing quite liberally below:
"John Lennon to play 'Jesus Christ' "
"Well, a couple of years ago, Beatle John Lennon said that The Beatles
were more popular than Jesus, now he will play the role of Christ
in..."
And then this brief article went on to say that Lennon was either
doing a play or movie in which he would be Jesus. I never saw a
follow-up or any reference to this in any Beatles or Lennon book I've
read. When I've recalled this over the years, I've wondered if it was
a rumor started because of the time John told the rest of the group
that he was Jesus(obviously he was really high at the time), and they
took him on top of the roof of Abbey Road to calm down and get some
air, or whether it was some mixed up report having to do with "Jesus
Christ Superstar" or "Godspell"?
Anyone remember this?

In Peter Brown's book there is the story of his declaring he was Jesus
Christ, after calling "an important meeting" of the band at a Chinese
restaurant.
And there was a separate story of how John mixed up his drugs, dosed
himself accidentally, and as he began to trip, George Martin noticed
he seemed sick. Martin, who was unfamiliar with LSD, took him up to
the roof of Abbey Road for some "fresh air". Cue the Fab 3, who, when
they heard about it raced up there to rescue John from trying out his
wings. The other three would never take a tripping John up on the
roof.

You know, Jodorowsky is a chilean (as I am) and the Lennon connection
is well known here, but Harrison nothing.
I even doubted the veracity of that Jodorowsky and Lennon
relationship, i thought it was an invent for our country to have any
connection with Lennon, in part, cos there was another story about
Lennon and Chile around the same time, that he was sending money to
the movement against the dictatorship of Pinochet... but i guess that
last story was just a myth.

The lead character in Holy Mountain is an obvious Jesus allegory. Just
considering that one fact alone, I can picture any number of hack
proto-"Rock journalists" of the time muddling up various bits of
things discussed in this thread to come up with the headline you
recall. The Beatles were always "fair game" when it came to playing
"f*** the facts" in the press!
But what I really wanted to say was that a gorgeous, massive new full-
color edition of Madwoman of the Sacred Heart just came out recently
-- and at a price that's about 1/3 of the usual per-page cost of slick
Eurocomix editions!!!! This fantastic graphic novel by Jodo w/Moebius
is better than any of his films, I say. Hell, it's close to being the
best thing he's ever written, period!

Album a news report or a headline stating "Lennon To Play Jesus". Or it
could have just been a political cartoon: two girls walking past a
newspaper hoarding which reads "Lennon To Play Jesus", and one of the
girls saying "Jesus who?"

commentary he 'met all the Beatles', except Paul I suspect.
Jodorowsky did sound a bit regretful that George wasn't in it. If you
watch the movie the part he would have played is fairly obvious, the
actor they got isn't memorable. He says something like 'it would have
changed everything'. I read the subtitles, he speaks in Spanish.
And someone would have had to pay for that movie, no one mainstream
would have touched it. It looks like a typical 70s movie with large
absurd sets, and it doesn't look cheap and is in widescreen.

Just as a tangent: Anyone here read "Son of the Gun"? It reads more
like a Tarantino/Rodriguez script than a Jodo GN -- and since Robert
R. and I go to the same comix shop I know he's read it and is a big
fan... so don't be surprised if RR & QT don't wind up shooting it

One might consider Jodo to be the "father of outsourcing" in that his

South America, where he could work super-cheap and get away with a lot
of quasi-illegal animal treatment, etc. In fact, he STILL managed to

making rock musicals about Jesus Christ a couple of years after John's
comments. It makes you wonder about their influence. Christ!
