Some commentators say that Ringo's drumming on the song Rain was the
finest of all the work he did for the Beatles. Do you agree or
disagree? Opinions please.

he does great work on so many but I'd have to say mine are Long Tall
Sally and a Day in the Life.

That extra gear he goes into on Long Tall Sally is some sensational
stuff.

That one, Revolution and Old Brown Shoe and
Hey Jude. The worst he did, was how Taxman
was recorded with that tambourine. Ugh.

Yeah it's good. Can't say it was his finest.
There is that bit in Drive My Car, I brought it up once before.
Then I saw a documentary with George Martin in it on New Year's Eve and
he played that bit from Drive My Car to show how good Ringo's drumming was.
It was said by Ringo or George or someone that Ringo played before the
beat, not after as is more common, or words to that effect.

Anyway, if I'm not mistaken Rain was slowed down on tape.

trying to talk about music? that's great!
my opinion is that ringo obviously had an affair with his drumsticks

I am not a musician, but I think the work on Rain is very good. Many
interesting fills. I also like the work on Carry that Weight and the
songs combined with it.

Yes, good choice. Ringo must have beat the hell out of drums on that
one.

Good choice! BTW, I think that guitar George is playing in the video
is the one that recently sold for over $400,000.

I guess you are right . . . . but for some reason some sources claim
someone was playing that guitar in the Hello Goodbye video.

The drumming in Helter Skelter is just so simple. It's
about the only thing that works for that song though.
I like the drumming in Sexy Sadie. Forgot that one.

I would have to name "Dig A Pony" as Ringo's finest
drumming, cause it makes no sense and I've never
heard anything like it. Best part of the song.

Well I like "She Said She Said". That's my favorite. I think the
playing is very fluid and organic and I like the wide-open spaces that
he leaves here and there. I love the way the tempo opens up from the
march-like middle section "when I was a boy..." back into the verse "I
said..." And I like the sound of the drums on Revolver overall. So
there you go. That is, I think I disagree.

Thanks.

Of the things on this list, I especially like the point that Ringo
could play unusual time signatures. IMO the fact that the Beatles
would record songs of varied time signatures shows how creative and
versatile
they were.

Your comments reminded me of Tomorrow Never Knows. Love the drumming
there. Unusual for a "rock and roll" band.

The link mentions Here comes the Sun and All You Need is Love as two
examples. I agree.

I Me Mine has an unusual time signature. A Day in the Life has a
varied time signature. Dig a Pony is another example.
There's a bunch.

There is another version of the Hello Goodbye video where John is seen
playing the Vox guitar in question.

Yikes - Elvis - Little Richard - Bob Dylan - Taylor Swift - Black-Eyed
Peas. That's a pretty pathetic summation of music over the last 60
years! Especially the last 40. Somebody needs to subscribe to Pandora
or Rdio or Spotify or *something*!

The guitar George plays in the video is his Epiphone Casino; the recently auctioned guitar is the Vox Kensington (the link above might help explain the confusion).
