"Galapagos"

by R.A.G. Seely

Galapagos Archip'lago
Strange cyclopean scene
Craters spew jets of gray smoke
Great black lizards lumb'ring

A rough-hewn and horrid aspect
Permeates the islands
Fields of basalt, fissured, cracked
Volcanic origins

Paradise for ab'rant reptiles
Lava, porous and dark
The bay swarms with animals:
Turtles, fishes, and sharks

Terrestrial mammals are scant
Curious are the birds:
Mockingbirds quite discrepant
Finches most singular

We shamble through the sun-burnt brush
Through wretched weeds we wade
Acacias and odd cactus
Solit'ry source of shade

A ship's captain, killed by his crew
His skull rests in the grass
Further signs of man are few
The sky's serene, cloudless

What monster could have made these tracks
Winding towards the springs?
Tortoises, their necks outstretched
Ancient and towering

Finches flitter, basilisks bask
Terrapins imbibing
I'm animated to ask
What forces formed these beings

Oh, poetry! Few have succeeded at this but it is nice that you try.

Can you please do a poem about a bird in the Galapagos islands without giving it away

Maybe. Can you guess what my recent effort, "Invasive Species," is about? Email your answer to me.
