Congrats Yanks. It takes a lot to top the show. They had depth (and a
darn tough 3 man starting rotation).

better than one out of every four years that the World Series has been
in existence. I've always liked the Yankees a little bit just because
of their rich history. All those old black and white movies about
Ruth and Gherig that I grew up with. They're not my favorite team
though.
Of course a lot of it is money, they've bought a lot of those
championships. It's one reason I don't even follow baseball anymore.
If they destroy the salary cap in the NFL and football becomes like
this, where only the richest teams can win, I will not be pleased at
all.

Ha ha. good reply. I heard that to buy a ticket to see the Phillies
during the Series at their stadium tickets were selling as high as
3000 dollars each. I heard that from someone who tried to get a
ticket. And we have this fight in Congress on health care reform;
maybe we need Congress to work on baseball reform :)

catch a few games during the season, yet complain that they can't
afford health insurance.

My brother said something once that made a lot of sense: Why are
there so many people who hang out in bars...saying they are out
of a job, got laid off...etc.....and they have wads of money laying
on the table all night. But they say that they have no money?

RichL, you are correct. Of course I don't know that for sure . . . I
was being semi sarcastic. But the point is if a team is doing well
like the Yankees, their stadium (which seats 40,000 or 50,000 people
and which tends to sell out) will spend big bucks on tickets, and an
additional $30 or more on food and parking (because that IS what is
costs) yet people will complain that they can't afford health
insurance or other necessities.
If the economy were truly that bad and people were hurting as much as
they say, I don't see how teams like the Yankees and Phillies would be
able to sell hundreds of thousands of tickets in a season.

Probably more like $ 50. They're expensive.

once lived with 7 other people. He told me that only about
3 of the people worked. He told me this one guy only had
an ambition of selling about 5 bucks worth of pot a day
so he could buy a ham and cheese sandwich. He was
shooting up drugs around this time. He died (from what
I heard) last year. He was about 52. What a wasted
life.

People with a lot of money still have plenty of excess cash during bad
times, and they can still afford to attend sports events. You make as
much sense here as you do when you say "I'm fine with my health
insurance, therefore nothing needs to be fixed".

Well, I wouldn't agree with the shooting up drugs. I also believe
people should put in the work to contribute their share. But
sometimes I think that some of these people who are "unplugged from
the matrix" are smarter in some ways than the rest of us who put in
long hours making a career. Meanwhile, they're just chilling,
stopping and smelling the roses, talking to their friends. Who's to
say which is better?

No offense, but everytime I read something like this, I have to
wonder:
"contribute their share" of what? to what?
It's pretty well known by now, isn't it, that even though the
productivity of Americans have increased, there spending power has
stagnated?
Recently the U.S. government got the names of individuals hiding money
in offshore banking accounts and went after them for taxes. Great!
But that was just individuals. Corporations continue to put millions
in off-shore tax havens defrauding this society of billions if not
more. Congressmen, Supreme Court judges, the POTUS -- they all know
this. They turn their heads.
What are we contributing to?

Well, I was thinking on a smaller scale. Like if a guy is living in
his house, he ought to contribute to the food budget and whatnot, earn
his keep you know? It's just a matter of being responsibile.
But I hear what you're saying. The current political/economical
climate is a very frustrating one to be in.
On the one hand, the corporations are ripping us off and treating us
basically as slave labor. But on the other hand, the government wants
to take the corporation's profits that they earned so they can
distribute it elsewhere. No wonder the corporations want to hide
their money.
And whatever happened to this being a free country? I thought I was
allowed to own my own land? So why do I have to "rent" it back from
the government by paying property taxes?
