point.

I can't think of any Rock albums that are considered great by most to
be totally bad, but there are some artists whose overall work has
been(IMHO) over-rated. Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, and Grateful Dead
come to mind. I know I have others, just can't remember right now.
That doesn't mean that I dislike their albums, only that I think there
was too much ado about their songs.

One writer once described country musicians as a "pinkin' and a grinnin' onthe theme of endless mediocrity."

I've never gotten U2. To me they've always sounded like a good
approximation of a good rock band. Like they've studied all the right
influences and know all the right moves and produce professional level
music with some degree of skill, but it still sounds received . And
even though Bono has all the right political causes, I mean, being
against AIDS in Africa, right on, he still comes across as a self-
absorbed jerk.

I think that what music snobs cannot appreciate suggests more about
their own limitations than the quality of the work they 'think is
shit'. But I do hate the fuck out of anything by Meatloaf, save his
number in Rocky Horror.

He certainly comes across that way. He is about as holier-than-thou &
touchy-feely as a self-centered rock star can get. But the
musicianship in the band is well beyond "some degree of skill" -- it's
practically incomparable relative to the rest of mainstream rock.

I dont know about "incomparable" as none of them are what you'd call
virtusuos, in any sense of the word... and I dont think any of them
would claim to be one
BUT they are very very good at what they do. they have their own
sound, instantly recognizeable and each of them brings part of that to
the whole... not many can claim that
>But the musicianship in the band is well beyond "some degree of skill" -- it's practically incomparable relative to the rest of mainstream rock.
Coldplay, Radiohead, Oasis, REM, Guns n Roses, Nirvana, Metallica,
Springsteen E-Street Band, The Police. You’re saying U2 towers above
all of them as musicians.

very similar to REM, nirvana. very effectively simplistic and cohesive music with outstanding vocals on top. police and radiohead and to some degree coldplay and oasis have plenty of both with police definitely way ahead of the curve musically. for me, the others you list are in the 'if you can't say something nice' category.

I have to disagree concerning the Police. They may have played some
simple sounding music, but having watch them from way up close once,
my opinion is that all three of them were extremely accomplished
musicians, possibly even virtuoso level.

"police definitely way ahead of the curve musically" did you miss that bit? yes, all three a extremely accomplished musicians who made some deceptively simple sounding music. it actually takes a lot of musical self confidence to use space as an instrument the way they did. can't say enough about copeland's drumming and summers's guitar voicing.

yes i did because your posts, for some reason, run along in one

no, that's the way my mind works... and i only get half the words out. ;^)
i can't win. i don't like the new google groups, but it's all i can use at work.
at home i'm using a VPN a lot which interferes with all other connections so it's google groups there too. i'll try adding more line breaks.

Anyone who questions the greatness of Wet Willy, Molly Hatchet and
Golden Earing is wearing his contrarian hat proudly.

And why do you care in the least whether those people in Africa die of
HIV? I don't hear you sympathizing for the white farmers being raped
and murdered in your beloved South Africa! A nation that would still
be enduring tribal warfare if not for same said whites. Where do you
think all of that get-ahead technology came from? The blacks? All they
know how to do is rape, pillage and destroy. Just like over here, or
anywhere else where they lived long enough to breed.
That is why I think death by AIDS for them is a good thing. And if
you had any predisposition for survival, you would too. But you don't,
so you think it's "right on".

Nashville Skyline sucks big-time. Because it is there we first learned
that Johnny Cash could not harmonize. And that Dylan was tin-eared
enough to let it all stand. But people loved it just the same.
And I though that June Carter was bad.....
Grand Funk had some pretty low-down [great] bad albums as well. BTO,
too... All of that loud-assed shlag from the early 70s.
