I agree. It's dreadful. I was doubtful about the guy on SNL, but on his
own it's clear to me... he's very unfunny.

OK, Guru, if a singer sings a song and they are off key, in your view,
how can that be a virtue? How do you assess the quality of a musical
piece when the singer is terribly off key or creates a song consisting
of animal noises, screeches, howls, yodels, orgasm moans, etc.?

I haven't seen Fallon's show yet but if you are looking for something at
that time of night you should try Craig Ferguson's show (and not just
because he's your namesake). It's got a lot of great bits, particularly if
you like puppets. Look on the youtube or somewhere for the interview he
just did with Billy Connolly if you want a good example of how odd his
'interviews' can be. Also Steven Wright shows up randomly sometimes which
is good.

I'm going to guess that Yoko will do "I'm Going Away Smiling" again., which
doesn't have any vocals that could be called "animal noises, screeches,
howls, yodels [or] orgasm moans." If I had to compare it to anything, it
would be a torch song or someone like Jacques Brel.

There's an irony in the fact that someone who takes such pleasure in sexual
references on this newsgroup would consider "orgasm moans" a bad thing for a
vocalist to do. Complaining about "yodels" betrays a lack of familiarity
with musical history, but that's no surprise. I suspect that not many people
are familiar with Jimmie Rodgers these days. Or even Hank Williams' version
of "Lovesick Blues.

A friend of mine doesn't like anything by her except POB, which is one of my
three favorite albums by her. The others are AIU, which I think has her
strongest songwriting, and It's Alright, which is the most interesting her
pop music got conceptually. There seems to be a musical vision behind it
that I don't always sense on her other albums.

Now that's utter bollocks isn't it Guru. I proudly wear my No3 badge

2 Genres of YO. 1) The shreaky shit and 2) the so called "song"

Don't know if you know this story, but John and Yoko were in an
automobile accident, and the doctor ordered Yoko to stay in bed.

John needed her "by his side" all of the time, so he had a bed brought
into the Abbey Rd. studios AND a microphone rigged above her head so
that he could hear her if she wanted to say anything.

The other Beatles were astounded, annoyed and antagonized by her.

Yes but it's not clever or arty it's just *out of tune* She obviously
strives to be in tune (with the songy type things)..she doesn't try
and be in tune with the shreaky stuff..but she does with the *I'm you

For one adult to be so dependent on another adult it is tragic. I

To even imply that anyone here could be a mass murderer is totally
uncalled for. Some people kill with their bullets, others try to
kill with their words. You try to kill people's spirits with your
words. Why not use the power of your written voice for a greater
purpose?? You can do it "Guru" if you choose to. It is your choice.

Thanks to PR, I stayed up to see the show. Never saw it before.

The opening monologue wasn't bad, but IMO Fallon just doesn't have
much comedic talent, at least not during the monologue. I can't put my
finger on it . . . I don't know if it's his persona, his timing or
what.

The Housewives skit was hilarious. I enjoyed that.

Loved seeing Ian McKellen.

Now as for Yoko and the Plastic Ono Band. (ah hem)
I enjoyed seeing Sean and I liked his guitar playing. I wish John were
here to see his son. He'd be beaming with pride.

Musically, the song (Waiting for the D Train) was certainly original
and interesting . . . but as for YO herself, closing her eyes and
smiling as she screeched, panted and made orgasm sounds.

What can I say. I guess it was a sexual experience for her. She
really comes across like a wacko. Actually, she reminds me of some
begger or homeless person that commuters see ever so often on/in NYC
subways, preaching above the noise of the train, begging, trying to
sing, etc. Commuters generally bury their heads in their newspapes or
pretend to be asleep in response to such performances.

Wow! You really are a self-righteous, pretentious, and hollow homily
spouting twit, aren't you?

By the way, Lama Lame-O, he DIDN'T "imply" you were a mass murderer, he
made an off-hand joke about your being a mass murderer. You may not like
that either, but it's a distinct difference. To "imply" something, one
has to present it in the context of a believably accurate statement,
which this wasn't. So when you get off your high horse, don't put your
foot in your mouth, because it might have something on it...

I wasn't overly enamored of the song or her performance either, but she
hardly appeared to be a homeless person, and the song (such as it was)
actually had a structure. Sean's playing was intense and interesting.

But - let's say you're right, and she came off like a screeching subway
bum - given the theme of the song, how can you be certain that that is
not precisely the effect she was going for and - thus - was totally
successful at?

Art isn't always pretty or easy-to-digest. I don't personally enjoy most
of what Yoko has to offer in the way of visual or musical art, but I
leave ejust nough critical headroom to accommodate the possibility I
could be missing something vital, while still preserving to myself the
right to say I simply didn't like it. It's a balancing act that most
critics of any substance try to maintain, and one which is not fatal to
emulate.

I forget which bio I read it in (the Spitz book, the Emerick book???)
but she used that mike to boss the Beatles around, make unwanted
comments, etc. She also sat in that bed with a tiara on her head, in a
nightie and invited people in the studio to visit her.

What I find so strange is that this is a Beatles newsgroup.
Supposedly there are many Beatles fans here, yet a number of them
think highly of Ms. Ono or, at a minimum, get upset if the "Yokotards"
criticize her. IMO the fact that she had the gall to sit in the
studio like that in a nightgown and boss the Beatles around and hold
court as if it were her home should be deemed outrageous conduct.
That's enough for true Beatles and/or Lennon fans to dislike her.

I don't know what you mean exactly by "smothered" but I would say the
answer is "yes." Yoko admitted in an interview after John died that
when he was alive she would send him away and did not want to be with
him. IMO she treated John and thought of John as a pain in the arse.

I agree YO did not appear to be a homeless person and looks quite
well, especially for someone who is 75+. Yes, the song had a
structure, but many people who sing on the subway sing songs that have
structure. I don't see that as much of an accomplishment. Certainly,
if that is all a song has to offer, that fact alone does not make it
worthy of a televised performance.

Sean's playing was intense and interesting.

Yes, it was. Actually, he left me wanting to see more. I am usually
not impressed by his singing . . . but I did enjoy his guitar playing
and would like to see/hear more.

Oh, that is a valid point. Perhaps that is what YO was trying to
achieve. Perhaps she was trying to capture the "mood" of the subway.
However, as one who has ridden the NYC subways many times, the song
did not move me that way. To me, she came across as some nutty lady
screaming for attention, making whatever noise came into her brain at
the moment. It did not move me emotionally, other than to make me
giggle a bit and think to myself, "what crap."

Dale, everything you say above is valid and thoughtful, although I may
disagree. As you know, I generally don't like her "art" and I
generally don't like her music.

I'm no "expert" on the subject, but I've seen and listened to enough
YO music over the years to form an opinion that the audience is
usually not missing something when she performs. IMO people who spend
lots of time analysing her music as if there is some deep meaning or
purpose are usually giving her far more credit than she deserves.

Love-hate, like-dislike.

I think with some it doesn't sink to that level. I think she was a
decent and talented person who was very immature and insecure. As in
most women, jealousy was a big issue with her. She was afraid the
Beatles would keep her from her John.

Partly, the folly of youth.

I know. :-(

A little while back I posted a link to a youtube movie which featured
an interview with Julian. During this interview, Julian stated that
he believes that even though Yoko might come across as innocent, she
had manipulative designs on John all along and knew what she was
doing. On his website back in 2000 or so, Julian referred to John as
"a manipulated lost soul" when he was under Yoko's influence.

Yes, Yoko captured John's heart and used him. IMO it was a one sided
relationship.

Funny you should say that, because in September 2005 and at other
times, Yoko gave interviews where she claimed just the opposite. She
has stated that she was a "lone wolf" and that John wanted to be with
her a lot and that she had to "learn" to be a partner.

Yoko also claimed in the NYC press back in 2005 that when John quit
the Beatles, it took her by surprise. She claimed in that interview
and/or other interviews, that when she married John she thought she
would continue with her art and he would continue with the Beatles.
Yoko also stated in that interview that John had three men to take
care of him (supposedly . . . . as if he were a mere child . . . what
a put down) and that once John quit the Beatles, now she had to take
care of him. (as if John were a burden)

The above interviews were given about the same time that the show
Lennon hit Broadway. You may recall that show received mostly bad
reviews. John was depicted as a needy, dysfunctional, anti social
child, dependent on his Yoko/mama who saved him. IMO the show
received bad reviews and bombed because most people were not
interested in seeing something which depicted John in such a poor
light. Yoko claimed that the show accurately depicted John.

As I mentioned in earlier posts, I've seen her recently on several
occasions and was somewhat impressed with her.

She's matured a lot. Back then, she didn't know herself too well, and
her current take on what happened may be distorted,

Much of the BS was immaturity coming from a brilliant mind. That's
intellect, not affect.

I haven't seen his show, on way too late for me and not important
enough to DVR; but I did think he was very funny on SNL, especially
his "Morning-zoo shock-jock" character, that was really clever.

Talk show hosts don't have to be particularly funny to be successful:
Johnny Carson (despite his reputation) was so far from being the
funniest comedian in the world that I doubt if he could have flown there
under five days. Jack Parr was dry as Mom's Christmas fruitcake in July.
Dick Cavett - as far as I could see - was cringe-worthy as a comic. And
so on. What is needed is a sense of ease between the audience and the
host, a feeling that the host is "one of them" and can be the brunt of
the jokes as well as the source (Dick Cavett didn't even have that: he
seemed to think he was a superior being, although he didn't come off all
that bright, but his show has "intellectual" trappings, so his very
awkwardness in the usual show biz tropes was probably an asset). I don't
watch Fallon's show really, but from what I've seen, he appears to be
personable enough to float a late night talk show. After that it's all a
matter of getting interesting bookings: Yoko may not be my cup of gumbo,
but she's something to watch (for various and personal reasons), and so
I did.

But that's just the point. If you've studies psychology and

insecurity.

The stutter was always there but buried underneath her sound and fury.
When she was ultimately called on her behavior, her true, insecure

This is why she HAD to control. John and everything else.
