EMERGENCY APPEAL FOR ANYONE IN THE HOUSTON AREA

Her son, Gordon (George's nephew), is very ill with cancer. He and his
wife, Carol, are dear friends of mine. Sadly, he is doing much worse
and the local hospital in Florida can do no more for him. Carol is
taking him to Houson to a Dr. Burzynski Clinic. Lou asked if I could
connect with the Beatles newsgroup to see if there is anyone here who
lives on the west side of Houston who could possibly put Gordon and
Carol up while they attend the outpatient clinic there. They have no
money for the treatment but she's hoping that she could get the Beatle
band that she manages to do a benefit to help them. Lou says that she's
very nervous and afraid right now, but that she also knows that "there
is much Beatle-goodwill out there toward George's kin."
Can anyone help? If so, please email me and I will get you in contact
with Lou and/or Carol. Thank you.

Seems almost impossible to think an appeal to Paul McCartney, with his
vast fortune, would fall on deaf ears. Why would George Harrison's
sister not be able to connect with the right folks rather than look
here or anywhere for a place to lay their heads in Houston.

I'm with you, Jim. But Lou asked that I come here and ask Beatle people
for help, and that's what I'm doing. Being that it's a time of good
will, perhaps someone will offer to come through for them.

Yes. He's a great guy... funny... caring. I'm so sorry to hear that
he's losing his fight. He has beaten the odds several times already,
and I pray that he can do it again.

If this was Mr. Mrs Smith...but GEORGE HARRISON'S sister. Surely help
is a call away. Unless I'm missing an important ingredient.

Sorry to read this story. My best wishes to Gordon and his family.
I've heard of Dr. Burzynski. Some say he does great work, others
believe it's too experimental. I guess the FDA approved treatments
have not been able to help Gordon, so he is trying this unusual
method.

Sorry to bother you, Dr. S., but any word yet? Lou seems to be anxious,
and has asked me twice more if I've had any luck in finding someone who
would be kind enough to give Gordon and Carol a place to stay for up to
three weeks while he gets outpatient care.

You should post this on the George Harrison MySpace....you will get an
answer or Paul's or Ringo's or Julians, or Sean's or Yoko's or
May's...someone will get you an answer. If time is critical....coming
here looking for housing for up to three weeks, is going to be tough.
I say this with all respect.....this is the wrong place for something
this timely. Run it by Lou.......time is wasting. Post accordingly.

Jim, I already did run it by her. I also contacted May, thinking she
may know someone, but no response yet. Again, just following Lou's
wishes.

Hello Donna. Just read this thread. I have an idea, though it may be
a bit out of the blue. Many churches and synagogues will have good
will/charity/mitvah type projects where they go out of their way to
help a refugee for example who is new to the United States, or pitch
in when there is a hurricane. Can someone make some calls to some of
the houses of worship in Houston and see if there is some good
samaritan who is willing to provide some space in their house as a
charitable gesture especially since it is the Hanukah and Christmas
season? I have this image that when Mary was pregnant she and Joseph
could not find room at an inn so they had to stay in a manger and that
is where Jesus was born. You know, maybe some kind hearted religious
soul will help out??? Maybe even a monastery or a nunnery. Or maybe
the archdioses of Houston should be contacted. Just a wild idea. A
church could think of it as a special Christmas project etc.
Oh yes just for interest I believe that Houston as a hospital called
MD Anderson. I have never been there but it is my understanding that
what Sloan Ketting is in NY city, MD Anderson is for Houston. Perhaps
if that is what they want, they could check it out

here with the fame of the young man and that is why they may be
looking just for a residence. But you do have an excellent point. The
clinic this man is trying to get to may not be a hospital but more of
a small clinic.

Can't you stop being a know-it-all for five minutes, PR? Lou asked me
to come to this group with her plea because she feels that there are
Beatles fans here who might be more willing to take them in. When
George was ill, she and I spent time reading posts from rmb. There were
kind, loving words for him, so I guess she feels that this is a place
where people would be more willing to open their hearts to her family.
But being that there hasn't been much luck here or the few other places
I've tried, she's now thinking about seeing if we can expand our search.

Donna I know on the show 60 minutes a while ago they featured this
doctor who created a substance called antineoplastin that according to
the FDA was not officially tested in studies and he was fighting with
them, and they actually took his license away. This was a few years
ago, and he vowed to fight to get his license back. Dr B's main work
showed success with brain tumors.
So he is very controversial and I hope Lou has checked him out
carefully
If this wikipedia article is accurate the facts on M D Anderson are
quite impressive in case your friend wants to go the traditional way--
it is right in Houston!!

some family dynamics going on. Unless the individual with cancer just
does not want to ask for financial help from those with the money.

money. In fact, none at all.
I'm sure there are some social service agencies who might be able to
help. You mentioned churches.

It sounds as if she's looking more for someone with whom I'm an
acquaintence (either personally or from this group), or perhaps a friend
of a friend. Something like that. She's been looking for Beatles fans
to help, as they've always been particularly kind to her. Craigslist
can be a dangerous place. But I think she's getting more open-minded
about other possibilities as time passes.

of the essence. Sometimes big hospitals themselves have charity
funds, that is, they have a charity foundation supported by donors in
the community to help patients who have no insurance and have large
one time needs like a wheechair the patient needs to buy or an
expensive drug. A social worker becomes aware of the need of the
patient and ties them in with the funds or the charity. Of course
though Dr B is doing unconventional medicine so he may in a sense be
in competition with M D Anderson a well established hospital. I just
wanted to put it all out there. Maybe a new development and Dr B has
been re accepted by the traditional medical community including MD
Anderson cancer center?? Don't know--all speculation.

According to the senior Mr. Johnston, Dan won't be reachable for at
least a few days, I'm afraid. He doesn't have a computer or a cell
phone, either, so I'm at the mercy of the land line that rings in his
home and at his parents' place next door.
I'll go ahead and email Jason Nightmare, the guitarist for Danny and
the Nightmares, just in case he's gonna be seeing Daniel in the next
day or two.
BTW: What dates are we actually talking about here as far as need a
crash pad?
