for this album. Does anyone know why they didn't use the planed artwork
for this album cover? and please don't say, " because Gene was too
greedy to pay the artist royalties." But really, does anyone know why

new album with Ace and Peter since it came out during the reunion time. So as
to not confuse fans, they put the photo with Kulick and Singer on it.

I think the reason is pretty simple, if regrettable for the loss of striking
album art. I believe they wanted there to be absolutely no confusion about
just who was featured on this new KISS album. ...Ironic, considering how
Psycho Circus turned out, huh? But no, what I meant is they wanted a clear
distinction made between musical, unmasked, leather-fetish KISS vs makeup,
reunion-era, spandexed KISS. This KISS album was by "those other guys."
Paul and Gene and Bruce did do their small part in promoting it, I'll give them
that. (Eric refused, because he wasn't getting paid for it.) Paul and Gene
were at the radio stations talking about the album, playing tracks. And, they
did a cool interview with Metal Edge that was all about every track on the
album and the recording process. This album was a Band effort, the last to
this point...
But what's regrettable about it is, since the album was initially shelved, and
then they went ahead and put out a no-frills version, this album never got the
benefits a new KISS album usually receives...a strong, marketable image on the
cover for one thing.
I still think they Could've considered using the head art up front and put the
band picture on back. Then you still get the "disclaimer" effect, but the
head itself is still there to draw people in to at least pick it up.
In one sense, that's showing a lot of respect for both lineups. If they'd put
that album out just with the KISS name on it and that cool head artwork and
there were big store displays and posters up...that just might've sold a few
more copies. It was 1996, after all... Anything for another buck?
Apparently not....
"JUNGLE" was playing like mad all over the radio around here, it did really
really well on rock radio for a song with virtually no push behind it. I'm
not sure many people even knew it was a KISS song.
While I missed out on having the album in a great package, at least the album
came out after all...I was afraid for a while that it never would. And I'm
kinda glad that picture was there to say, THIS BAND did it, these guys... no
one else.
I think there's also a chance the title of the album had something to do with
the cover art change....perhaps... I'm not absolutely certain of this, but I
believe the Fans actually Named this album Carnival Of Souls...which is a
first, as far as I know. It first showed up on the internet, initially as a
song title Gene had tossed out, and it seemed to gain a life of it's own, as
people started pulling for it as the album name.
See, Gene had this little pet idea about calling the album, "HEAD," which
might've suited the artwork Better than COS, you know. But I know I wasn't
crazy about it, even though I dug the artwork. And I remember Paul saying in
an interview, "I can tell you it's NOT going to be called 'Head'...!" But no
other title ever presented itself, even as a rumor, and before long the
internuts were, in the majority, referring to it as COS all the time. I
remember a time or two when someone would ask, "I thought it was going to be
called Head, ya know, like the artwork we saw on KMA?" And I'd find myself
saying, "NO! That's a stupid title!" And COS came to be. It was a shelved
project anyway... I figure it only came out because it was leaking all over the
place anyway... A lot of inferior copies were out there... I know, I had to
buy a couple.
Funny thing is--today, I find I kinda Like Gene's original jest of an idea...
Who knows, if he'd still like to find a use for the artwork, they just might go
on and call the Next album Head just for the joke of it! Would we see a big
leather-faced flaming head prop on the next tour? Eh...probably a bit much for
this family-friendly version of KISS.

terribly wrong with the rest of it... Cropped way too tight...Eric's mouth is
almost missing, and Gene's bland, naked face is just way too Big...you can't
get away from it! Aaaaah! And the rainbow princes effect just didn't
flatter them...not cool.
2. Hot In The Shade--because there's no KISS logo in the corner to identify it.
A shame too, because this was at the very end of the Vinyl days, and it would
be the last KISS album I'd ever see on the racks alongside the new cds on the
day of release. The last king-size KISS album cover was a bummer. The tour
kicked ass, though...
3. Carnival Of Souls -- Not because it's a bad photo, but because I knew it
wasn't originally meant to Be a mere snapshot taken during the recording
sessions. Gene had me ready for something a little more interesting. A
leather-faced choker with a flaming head... Interesting and mysterious and
twisted and sinister all at once. And Gene Likes to say "Head...!
Uh-huh-huh..."
4. Creatures Redux... Not necessary at all, when you consider the original has
perhaps the greatest of all KISS album covers... But it's a nice
record-company trick in retrospect. Make it look like a new album in order to
get people to give it another chance who might've missed out on it the first
time around. (It sure surprised ME! But I had the original, so...) After
all, KISS was dead in the water in '82, didn't sell much, so why not give a
great album a new package for a new audience in '86 or whenever this came out?
(In the midst of their return to Platinum status) Sure, Bruce didn't play on
it, but hell, no one guitarist who did was on the original cover, either!
5. Smashes, Thrashes and Hurls... Or Dressed To Klown... I dunno... I
declare a tossup.

Regrding C.O.S, they had to let fans know that Eric and Bruce were on
the album. Hence, they were pictured on the cover. However, it would
have been nice to see the original artwork within the packaging or
turn the CD into a picture disc.

Actually, in an interview with Metal Edge as far back as 1994 or 95, they were
trying to get information out of Gene about the new album, and they asked him,
"Can you tell us the names of some of the songs?" - and "Carnival of Souls" was
one of the names that he gave, and this is where the phenomenon grew from.

I have 2 versions of the cover that a guy made for me in 1997. He
gave them to me for free because I traded some bootlegs with him.
The inserts included lyrics, alternate pictures and alternate covers.
They do look really nice, but I'm content with how they released
C.O.S. I really dig C.O.S because it is different. One thing that
would have mad the package of C.O.S more interesting was to put the
flaming head on this CD itself, as a picture CD. I was listening to
C.O.S today. I like it quite a lot.

I thought the Animalize cover was unique in that it tried to
represent the band as 4 individual personalities, much like
RARO and the 4 themed backgrounds. I think these are the only
2 covers that did this...

What I think doesn't matter. Your confusing something you like for something
that is fact. Get a dictionary out if you have one and look up the words
"fact" and "opinion".
Just for the record, I do like Killers cover better than Asylum, but they are
both crappy. Gene and Paul look very stupid on Killers. I was expecting Paul
to do a cover of Olivia Newton John's "Physical" with that look he had.

during the Asylum era definitely takes the cake for the all time low image wise. Gene and
Paul looked like a couple of aging transsexuals - both of whom were badly butchered during
