=================
US release of the LP : Music from The ELDER by The Rock group called: KISS.
When Kiss premiered Music from "The Elder" for their management and record company in October 1981, the reaction was a mixture of confusion and resentment.
Business manager Howard Marks refused to allow his company's name to appear in the liner notes.
Fan reaction to the album was equally harsh, while critical reaction was comparably positive. But while reviews like the one printed by Rolling Stone were much kinder than past reviews, the album quickly disappeared from the charts by February, 1982.
Q magazine ranked Music From "The Elder" 44th in their list of The 50 Worst Albums Ever.
The same magazine ranked the album 6th in their list of 15 Albums Where Great Rock Acts Lost the Plot.
Reached # 7 in Norway
When KISS was planning to release their albums on CD, Music From The
Elder was not planned.
KISS bowed to pressure from the Fans who took a belated liking to the
album and was the last album to be released on CD in 1989.
Re-mastered and re-released in 1997 with the track listing that Band
wanted:
1. Fanfare
2. Just A Boy
3. Odyssey
4. Only You
5. Under The Rose
6. Dark Light
7. A World Without Heroes
8. The Oath
9. Mr. Blackwell
10.Escape from the Island
11. I
But "The Finale" was left out.
KISS Album #9
1st album for Eric Carr, last album for Ace.
The story is about a young boy recruited by the Council of the Elders
who belong to the Order of the Rose
to be trained to battle against evil.
Even though it had a story, the movie was never made but an
unauthorized comic was made in the 1990s.
"KISS" decided - after 2 pop music albums - to go back to their rock
roots after seeing that
a concept album was the "in" thing like Pink Floyd's The Wall album
and they hired Bob Ezrin to
produce the concept album.
The making of the album was also to show the Members as credible
Artists in order to reverse the trend
of poor sales and waning commercial popularity.
Now considered a cult classic in line with : KISS, Hotter Than Hell &
Dressed To Kill.
KISS had the plan of making Music From The Elder a 3 album story line
with the followup called :
War of The Gods. It was scrapped due to very poor sales.
Bob Ezrin: "... In fact, for years after the ELDER, Paul was really
very angry with me....."
Ace's guitar work was minimized without his approval due to the
sensitive nature of the album
and was outvoted 2 ( Gene & Paul) to 1. Eric was not a partner and Ace
who did not like the dominance by Gene & Paul.
Ace due his unhappiness ended up not appearing on a TV performance and
missing some recording sessions.
Ace : "...I have the original solos that were cut. I'd say 40 to 50
per cent of the guitar solos and overdubs that I did were never used
by Bob. To this day I don't really understand why."
Their looks and costumes dramatically changed with Paul embracing a
purple headband with short haircuts
and no platform heels.
Talk of removing the makeup was discussed during the making of the
album.
There was a tour planned but after poor sales and reception from Fans
it was canceled and only
TV performances were given and they also "escaped" to Europe seeking
approval.
The abandoned stage show would feature KISS in a 3 act play as Keepers
of The Light and Truth, protecting a damsel in distress with a freeze
gun.
2 promotional videos were shot : I and A World Without Heroes
When KISS premiered their album to their Management and record
company, they were both confused and in a state of resentment.
For many weeks after, Paul was too embarrassed to walk around NY and
LA showing his "two faces".
When The Elder was released in Japan, distributors feared the worst
and put a cover showing the band in their costumes and makeup over the
original cover. It was also not called Music From The Elder; instead
it was given the title Great Decisive Battle of The Underworld.
Eric Carr received writing credits for 2 songs: Escape From The Island
and Under The Rose.
Only You was originally performed as Eskimo Sun, a love song by Wicked
Lester around 1970.
The hand on the cover is said to be Paul's but Bill Aucoin stated that
it belongs to a hand model.
On one track, I, Carr was unable to provide Ezrin the desired
progressive rigidity and was replaced by session
drummer : Alan Schwartzberg.
Allan Schwartzberg : "... But with KISS it's understandable, they
chose not to credit me so the fans would think it was only their idols
playing on the album.
Ironically, despite it decidedly cool response from the KISS ARMY
(many AWOLed), years after its release, it now commands its share of
new found respect and belated praise from the Band's legion of
followers.
Independent Film Project
-------------------------
On November 16, 2011 it was announced that pre-production had begun on an independently produced adaptation of Music from "The Elder".
British author/musician Seb Hunter said that he was beginning to write a screenplay based upon Gene Simmons’ original concept and is producing the film himself alongside friend and colleague Owen Oakeshott.
To finance the film, Hunter has asked for donations through The Elder official site :

It is approximated that the overall budget for the film will be £30,000. Mentorn Media have also begun work on a documentary titled, Exhuming "The Elder" which follows the independent filmmakers behind the scenes as they attempt to bring The Elder concept to fruition.
