OT: WTF is Anvil?

Eddie Trunk really sucked up to them. Some guy who had produced a movie
about them came out and talked them up. So I thought, "Dang, what have I
been missing?"
Anvil played two songs and to be honest they sounded like shit. OK, maybe
they had an off night. So I visited their YouTube channel. Even the studio
tracks they had available to stream sounded like shit.
So, why do I read all over the web how great they are, and how they should
have made it big? This crap was pathetic; unlistenable.

metal back in the 80's then Anvil was right in there. Anyway, this
new movie about them is good. Even if you don't like Anvil it's still
a good movie about a struggling band and two guys that met when they
were 14 and stuck together to this day chasing a dream. Even the guy
that made this movie met them when he was a teenager and remembered
how well the band treated him when he was a kid and it's a good story
how this film maker always remembered that and grew up to make this
movie about them. If they were an asshole to him or just gave him an
autograph and rushed him through a line like many bands do this movie
never would have been made.

Yeah, I remember all that from the Metal Show thing. But, seriously, their
music just isn't that good. I watched some of their old footage on YouTube
and they weren't much better back in the day...

I saw that shit. What's up with the stupid face "Lips" was making
while he was playing? Not impressed. I've seen plenty of local and
semi garage bans that sound better.

I don't know about all that! :)
They were just a cool band out of Canada that put out ANTHEMS like
'Metal on Metal' and 'Forged in Fire'.... If you spent any time at all
in import shops looking for Witchfinder General/Sodom/Bathory/Venom/The
Rods, etc albums... You would have found Anvil in there.
They were never that great... but, had their moments..
If you don't like this... I guess they're just not your cup of tea..

I remember reading about McCoy, and Mammoth, and Slade, and wondering,
who the F are these guys??
Definitely, one of my guilty pleasures is going into my box of old
Kerrangs, and just seeing how the predictions worked out... :)

Ditto. I saw this with a friend who is a total metal nut [mostly the
thrash/death type stuff], and with my girlfriend, who couldn't care less
about heavy metal or Anvil. They both loved it, and so did I.
Depending on your empathy level you'll either really like and respect
the guys in Anvil, or you'll just laugh your ass off at them. Possibly
both. Either way the movie is a really fun way to spend 90 minutes.

First Visit is bad ass. I am still trying to get into Animal Man. It
was a happy day when those CDs arrived from Poland.

I only had the First Visit LP back in the day and didn't hear Animal
Man until I got the CD. Maybe it requires more spin time, but I

Pretty entertaining (although some of it seemed a little staged).
Worth checking out.
Reminds me a lot of two of my favorite movies, "Spinal Tap" (for
obvious reasons) and "American Movie" (quirky documentary about a
loveable loser keeping his dream alive, think "Fargo" meets "Spinal
Tap").

These guys have NEVER given up hope... I hope they get a shot in the arm
from this exposure...
I'll say it again (since there's a long interview with Lars Ulrich on
the DVD).... All these bands that sing their praises should take them
out on tour...Same goes for Raven, Saxon, Girlschool, etc.

I've recommended the movie to many people, thought it was
very good for what it was... and they have indeed gotten a
lot of exposure and work as a result.

I just recently read somewhere that after watching the movie Angus
Young called them and asked them if they would open for them on their
current tour. I'm not sure if that went through.

AC/DC didn't really owe them anything....
I'm telling you... I met Lips a number of times in the 80's - and talk
