My point is it's on both sides. For every idiot that voted for Obama
because he's black, looks smart, is well spoken, isn't a Republican,

I don't have to read "her" book to see that. Palin is what people
accuse Obama of being--a "nobody who hasn't done anything" and a
product of dumb America. If one would sit down and go beyond the hype
and look at her background, you would see she's not remotely qualified
to be President.

I'm coming to the healthy conclusion that anyone that picks a side, or
maybe even VOTES is a fucking retard.
What would be interesting is if one year they ran a few candidates and
all you knew about them was their position on about a hundred key
issues. You fill out the questionnaire and you automatically vote for
the guy you should be instead of the one that talks good or the one
with the nice legs...

I totally agree anybody that picks a side is doing themselves a
disservice. I love how those people claim to be "a real American", yet
they want they want to distance themselves from others who have
different views and morals. Most of the people who take sides have no
clue.

My feelings on politicians is that they are all liars and cannot be
trusted. Sadly, a lot of voters choose with their eyes instead of
their ears. Or in the case of Obama, he got a good chunk of votes for
simply being a Democrat. After 8 years of Bush, a lot of people wanted
nothing to do with Republicans, so they voted to spite that party.
However, there were also people who did their homework and voted for
Obama because they felt he was the guy that could get this thing
turned around (or at least get it pointed in the right direction).
Time will tell if they were correct.

You're right -- there's plenty of dumb to go around, no matter the
political ideology.
I find myself wondering just how good a thing it is to encourage
people to "get out and vote" when you consider the amazing lack of
knowledge so many of them have. While I truly wanted to see Obama win
given the choices we had, talking to people about why they were voting
for him often made me cringe. I don't expect everyone to be as
interested in politics as I am, but even just a little awareness would
be nice.

At this point, I can see it becoming a reality. Instead of debating
issues, politicians will have to sing a song every week.

It's a double edged sword. On one hand, you want everyone to voice
their opinions and get out there and vote, but people don't bother
doing just a little research and find out what the candidates are all
about. Especially in this day and age where you have the internet at
your finger tips, you can easily find out just about all you need to
know about them. It's not hard, it just takes effort.

certainly no Harvard scholar, or spends too much time being
vindictive in her writings -- I'd completely agree with ya.
You say in your next post that her book "succeeds as self-promotion"

upon policy". Well of course it does.. it was written in less than 6
months (ain't gonna get an epic masterpiece of global policy in that
time).. it was written for Jane Doe Hockeymom (who wanted exactly
what they got -- a memoir/diary so to speak).. and it is probably
intended to be a (faking her accent best I can) "Sit down and get'ta
knowya..!" piece of fluff. She did it for the money.. she did it because
it was what 'they' do.. write a book, make a tour, get your name out
there, be a candidate, be a celebrity. It's how people either a) get rich
b) get famous c) get elected or d) all the above. Schwarzeneggar (sp)
Jesse Ventura, Al Franken, Ronald Regan, Bill Bradley (nba player/
senator), Fred 'Gopher' Grandy (US House of Reps/Love Boat)..etc
etc etc.. the list is almost endless.
If this country wanted a true politician, a Newt Gingrich or a James

would be president. A Pat Buchanan or a Ron Paul or a Ralph Nader.
There are people that live and breathe politics, and there are celebrities.

Gotta disagree with you 100% (surprised? :-) ). While she did provide
an initial boost with her rockstar performance at the RNC (ironic), as
time went on and she gave interviews and we found out more about her,
people realized that there was no substance beneath the surface. I
truly believe that she sealed the deal for Obama as more and more
people grocked that she was *this* close to being VP of the United
States.

Palin is a talented politician, I'll give her that much. But as far as

She *quit her job as governor* so she could do this. I think that says
a lot about her as a potential candidate for anything. The examples
you gave...they all had fame before embarking on a political career,
and I don't think any of them (perhaps "Gopher", dunno how much work
he was getting as an actor at that point) needed money. Palin has done
the opposite.

It makes me cringe whenever someone criticizes Obama for his celebrity
while they give Palin a pass. She's more of a "rockstar" or "messiah"

Hard to gauge Palin really.. there was indeed a huge boost when she
was first announced. I doubt a whole LOT of republicans became
disgruntled with her as time went on, but most certainly you are correct
in the sense that democrats found plenty of flaws with her, and thus she
suffered in the media. And indeed, there are those in the GOP that
dislike her. That would have been true with anyone he chose tho, there
is no one in politics that will find universal 'favor'.

We can find many faults in her, as we could in anyone we put under
a microscope. The only thing I would throw up in defense of her is
that she was very successful as a city council member, mayor, and
became the states youngest, and also first female governor. She
had the highest approval rating of any sitting governor while in office.
What she may or may not have done on a national or global level
will most likely remain an unknown. She WAS tho, very popular within
her own state.

Well, I wasn't implying that she could/should/would have ever
written such a book, but rather that she wrote what she was
either asked, or expected, to write. Certainly not holding my
breath while awaiting for her to win any kind of literary award. :)
McCain likely picked her not for any kind of a 'deep thinker', but
rather for what she was... a 'common' person who would relate to
the common voter. He could have made a hundred more 'qualified'
choices.

If anything hurts her in the future (providing she runs for office again)
it will be quitting as governor. In an interview this week, she claims it
was due to the bad publicity being brought to the office as long as she
held it. There is probably an iota of truth to that. She ran up a bunch of
debt, chose to make some big bucks, wrote a book. I can fault her for
that, but understand the motive. She has a large family, and with the
book deal, they can live comfortably from here on out. Even with her
faults she ranks third in the GOP (as far as favorability) just under
Huckabee and Romney.

Absolutely agree.. both came from virtual obscurity. Obama became
a rockstar in about three months time, Palin did it in about one week.
I think what that really shows, in both cases, is that people are wanting,
hoping for, a new face, a change, a new 'path'. Obama promised it,
Palin followers hoped she would be that for the republicans. It does show
a common trait tho, in both parties.. in that the populace is getting tired
of the Washington crowd.
