OK people - lets get this list going to help each
other discover some new music.

Stuff I've been into lately:

1) Jake E. Lee - A Fine Pink Mist

This is a solo instrumental album from the
ex-Ozzy guitarist and I must say it is spectacular!
Sort of like Ty Tabor's Naomi's Solar Pumpkin in that
Jake pretty much did the whole album himself. Lots
of creative, heavy riffing as well as some cool acoustic
sounds. Drum machine is the only drawback.

2) IQ - Ever

These guys are sort of like Marillion. I'm starting
to buy all of their CDs.

3) Magellan - Test of Wills

I know, I know its on Magna Carta - but it kicks
ass!

4) Ozric Tentacles - Become the Other

This is instrumental "space rock" at its best.
If you havent' heard this band, you are missing
some great stuff.

5) Drew Neumann - Eye Spy

Well I don't actually have this yet - I just ordered it
today. This is the music from the animated series
Aeon Flux. I don't know how to describe the music, but
its really cool.

In my player this week:
1. The Grays - Ro Sham Bo.
One of the best pop albums ever. If you like Jellyfish and/or Matthew Sweet,
you'll probably like this. It features Jason Falkner(ex-Jellyfish guitarist,
now a solo artist), who is an amazing talent - like Nuno and Todd Rundgren, he
plays all the instruments on his record. I love it. It's great!

2. Fountains of Wayne - Fountains of Wayne.
Another great pop record, with a little more attitude than the Grays. Guitarist
Adam Schlesinger is probably best known for his song "That Thing You Do!" (from
the Tom Hanks movie of the same name)

3. All - Percolater.
If there could be such a thing as Progressive Pop-punk, this album is it. Weird
rhythms and chord voicings combied with energy and attitude (and a
poppy-sounding singer) make for a fun listening experience.

4. Chicago - Group Portrait (Discs 1-3).
One of my favorite bands of all time. Listen to this set and hear why. Terry
Kath was one of the greatest, most creative guitar players of all time. No one
ever gave him the credit he deserved. Nuno likes 'em, too...

5. King's X - Ear Candy.
The name says it all. Great songs, great playing and great singing all rolled
in to one, recorded beautifully. Mmmm...candy.

(The aforementioned albums don't include the steady diet of Van Halen, Rush,
Led Zeppelin, Live and (of course) Extreme that I listen to.)

Oh yeah - Chicago is highly underrated - probably my favorite of all
time, and especially Kath. I've been listening to "Live in Japan"
lately, and his playing and singing constantly blow me away. If it was
"The Terry Kath Band" he would be as big as Hendrix. I had no idea Nuno
liked him - where has he talked about it?

Your not close-minded riorox, you just have good taste in music.
I am the type of music lover that goes with my heart so if I feel like
spinning "Schizophonic" or "WFTP" the whole week Im gonna damn do so.
I still am looking for another band or artist that can effect me like
Extreme and Nuno did but Ive had no luck. Our beantown boys were a one

Here's a great one that may take a little digging to find, but it will be
well worth it. It's called BLACK LIGHT SYNDROME, by Terry Bozzio, Tony
Levin, and Steve Stevens. It's all instrumental, and is VERY DANGEROUS.

For those of you who don't know who these guys are, Terry Bozzio is a SICK
drummer who has played with Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, Missing Persons, and
Jeff Beck to name a few. He's my favorite living drummer (John Bonham of
Led Zeppelin is my all time favorite if you must know.....)

Tony Levin is one of the most gifted and innovative bass players there is,
having played with King Crimson, and Peter Gabriel for starters. He also
plays "stick" on this. The man's sheer talent cannot be denied.

Steve Stevens has played with Billy Idol, Robert Palmer, Michael Jackson,
Vince Neil, solo projects and others. He was the real surprise for me here.
While I always appreciated his talents, he shows sides of himself here that
few would have suspected. This is without a doubt, the best playing he has
done to date. He has grown tremendously since Rebel Yell.

So, if you look at these guy's resumes, you realize that they are of the
musical elite....and you SHOULD be scared at what they'd do together. It's
the best of the best jamming together.

This is a fearless album that explores so many types of music, it'll make
your head spin. There is so much delicate interplay between these guys,
it's a true LESSON in musicianship.....and it was recorded in only 4days!

My personal pick for best track on the disk would be track 3, called
"Duende" where Steve Stevens, Terry Bozzio, and Tony Levin do a
"question:answer" thing between the guitar and drums and bass in the
intro...but not blues as you would guess....to FLAMENCO!! You've never
heard anything like it.....then they settle into a relaxed but confident 7
1/2 minute Flamenco jam that will leave any true music die hard drooling in
a corner.

It took me almost a year to find this disk, but I'm very happy with the
results. Hopefully, with the info that I'm about to provide, those of you
who want to check it out won't have the same frustration I had. It's on a
label called "MAGNA CARTA" and is copyrighted 1997. It's catalog #
MA-9019-2. They have a web site at http://magnacarta.net/

Please let me know if any of you pick it up, and let me know what you think
of it. If you're into SERIOUS musicianship, I can't see how you could
possibly be dissappointed.

PS....Jason, as always, you're ideas are great.......I love the idea of
this, I'm hoping someone will turn me onto something really great that I
might have missed. I agree that Nuno's new direction sounds VERY promising,
and just may prove to be his best work. Until then, check out THIS trio!!

Stay well everyone, and keep your minds and your ears OPEN!!!

Hmmm... good idea!

Frank Zappa - Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar

Hey. Trust me on this. Zappa can do
it all. This is merely one of many facets
of his ability.

The Posies - ANYTHING

These guys write the best songs.
Underrated as players. Incredible live.
Shame they're spitting up.

Ani DiFranco - ANYTHING

Tremendous guitar player. Even better
songwriter. Although she's about to
take the world by storm, you should get
familiar now.

The Dismemberment Plan

Quirky post-punk from DC. Intelligent.
A blast to listen to.

Shudder to Think

Beyond definition. You'll love it or
hate it. Like nothing else.

... more to come.

Allright. Lets Go!

Bruce Dickinson - Alive in Studio A (1994)
THE voice of heavy metal. All his best post maiden songs.

Drain - Horor Wrestling (1996)
Swedish all girl band. Sounds a bit like Alice in Chains, Paradise
Lost and Alanis Morissette kind of rolled into one. The single 'Crack
the Liars Smile' is one of the best songs I've EVER heard.

Def Leppard - Slang (1996)
The most underrated and best album they've ever done. Especially
Deliver Me.

Terrorvision - Regular Urban Survivors. (1996)
They should be huge, especially with songs like Perseverance and If I
Was You. Don't know if this album is available in the US but I think
it is.

That's my lot, feel free to flame away.

Didn't know Jake was still recording. Would be interested in this - he's
supposedly heavily Mahavishnu influenced (which I love). Is it easy to find?

My 5:

1, 2, 3: Philly Soul (Gamble and Huff retrospective) - Best of the best from
the Philly Sound (O'Jays, Intruders, Harold Melvin, Billy Paul, etc.). A must
have. Why don't they make R'n'B records like this anymore? Puff Daddy is wack.

4: Jackie Brown ST. More R'n'B gems. Highly recommended.

5: Disc 1 of Santana's latest compilation (Heart, Soul, and Spirit?) Santana
rules. Even tho he hasn't put out anything great since Blues for Salvador,
there's so much good stuff that came before that that you can forgive him. One
of the few players who really can make a guitar sing.

Sorry if I'm a little fuzzy on the titles, but these were all Valentine's
presents from my girlfriend, which she bought w/o me asking for them. Very
cool! And all I got her was flowers and candy...

One group I have gotten into lately: Pet Shop Boys! I know they were a
techno mainstay in the late Eighties, but there music is deeper than
dance-pop fluff as I recnetly found out. They are arguably the only
dance/techno group of any significance due to it's use of techno as a
background for lyrics rather than just filler. They are uncannily like
Extreme in the fact that they talk about society's ills, yuppie
idealism, consumerism, need for true love in a corporate society, and
the loneliness in climbing up the corporate ladder. People please
recheck this group out; it's one of those few groups that make you feel
wiser after listening to it (like Extreme, Pearl Jam, Living Colour,
Skid Row) except the genre is techno. It's well worth the time!

I'll de-lurk to add to the thread:

1. Jason-- Houston, we have a problem

Jason (from Saigon Kick) is the only person on this earth that could
even come close to rivaling Nuno's musical genius.

2. Ani DiFranco-- Little Plastic Castle

Poppier Ani, but Ani nonetheless.

3. Lord of the Dance ST

I just can't seem to stop listening to this one!

4. Natalie Macmaster-- No Boundaries

Cool Celtic fiddle music!

5. Saigon Kick-- Moments from the Fringe

A bunch of B-sides & demos that Jason released. Has the last song ever
written & recorded w/ Matt!

I've got a bunch more in rotation in the car, but these get the most
workouts!

2. Anthrax - Stomp 442

3. Mr. Big - Live at the Hard Rock (another underrated guitarist!!!)

4. Bryan Adams - All the b-sides/live stuff

5. Terence Trent D'Arby - Symphony or Damn

...ya know I keep hearing a lot about Saigon Kick. I saw this band

Honestly, I can't remember. I think it might have been in Guitar For The

about Chicago. Another thing - Jimi Hendrix was a HUGE fan of Terry's playing
and vice versa. They both came from such a similar place (experimentation and

enough ego to go solo. He was the heart and soul of that band, and when he
died, they died. Now they're a pop band. What a shame...

I just picked up this CD set yesterday. I listened to most of it last

Even though I have heard many of the songs on Crystal Ball before on

It was released through some record chains (Best Buy, Blockbuster, Sam
Goody are some of them) on Wednesday, February 25. He was originally
only going to sell it through his mail-order company called new funk,
but then he decided to release it through some retail outlets as well.

True, but they've had some great guitarists since. I have a bootleg of
a show they did in 82 when Chris Pinnick was on guitar, and that tape is
almost singlehandedly responsible for me picking up the guitar - he's
like Al DiMeola on crack. They really let him stretch out back then.
Dwayne was good, but out of place. I don't know much about their new
guy (Kevin), but what I've heard is pretty impressive - he's as close to
Kath as they've gotten. His "25 or 6 to 4" solos are always top notch.

I love Chris' playing. I just wonder why he parted ways with the guys...I hope
they realize that they need to be a band again, rather than Lee, Bobby, Walt,

Sorry, it seems that the info was mixed up somewhere. I heard that the
release date for the album was postponed, but the truth is March 25 is
the releaste date for "Without You" single. So I think VH III is still
expected to be out on March 10 in Japan.

The Japanese Without You single(ref:WPCR-1499) will contain:
1.Without You (edit)
2.Without You
3.Ballot Or The Bullet
