i think deb is the greatest song writer ever. i dont think here has ever been
anyone else that can write songs as well as she can. i mean if she can write
great songs like out of the blue or foolish beat at age 16 or whatever you know
your dealing with a song writing wonder! that is why i'm a little confused why
she isnt writing very many of her own songs lately. the title track of the myob
album, she didnt even write! i mean its a great song and she sings it well. but
why didnt she write it? i hope she hasnt forgot how to write songs, or i hope
she isnt getting bored with writing songs. i definately hope she hasnt given up
writing ballads!

I was just thinking about this today . I like Deb as a song writer but she
is not the best IMHO.

To me Sting may be the most brilliant Rock/Pop song writer of all time.
Just listen to The Soul Cages and Ten Summoner's Tales.
He tells stories wonderful stories.
I love Deb but Sting is the man.

Robby don't dis him if you have never listened to the songs and I mean
really listened.

I don't think you could call her a "great song writer". At times her song
writing has been excellent, but she has also done some stuff that's a bit
iffy to say the least. All song writers produce good and bad in their
career's and DG is no different.

What defines a great song writer? It's probably longevity. Will DG's
song's be played worldwide in twenty years? Will they be covered? I don't
know, but if YOU think she's a great song writer then fine. I don't have a
problem with her doing other people's stuff. Why not? I think she's a very
good song writer but needs to expand her writing skills (if she ever gets
Skirts done! that might show a different side of her writing talents)

For crying out loud Robby. This the the *FIRST* time Deb has recorded a song
that she didn't write that wasn't a remake. Give it a rest!

By the way, I do think Deb's lyric writing is getting better and better all the
time....MYOB has the best lyric writing she has ever done. Its not the best in
the world, but its good. She is the best as far as writing melodies
though....her melodies are unbeatable!

I always liked Joshua Kadison's lyrics....what ever happened to him? I
thought he and Deb should collaborate. They both play the piano quite
well, and Joshua had a knack for writing memorable story-songs,
something I think Deb should explore more.

Robby wailed in horror

"yeah but if she did it one time, she might do it again. what if she
never puts out another album with all the songs written by herself
again??? "

Gee I don't know. Many the earth will stop turning!!!! ;-) I hope she
keeps recording other people's songs. I'm a songwriter and fellow ASCAP
member and would just love to have her record a couple of my songs or
collaborate w/ me. If she only does her own material that will never
happen!

"what? how can you get better lyrics then the twyh album? it can not be
done!"

Yes it can. I've written songs that I think are lyrically just as
powerful as Debs. I've been writing songs since I was 12 and have books
and books of them. One of these days I'll be brave and post some lyrics!
Billy Joel, Sting, Carole King, Carole Bayer Sager, and hundreds of
other songwriters also write incredible songs. Deb is talented, but
there are other talented people in the world also.

"lol, yeah right. your going to tell me that the lyrics to myob are
better then the lyrics to didnt have the heart or think with your heart?
earth to audioambrosia, no they arent!"

The song MYOB is a bit hard to follow IMHO, but the rest of the album
has some stronger lyrics. The song MYOB's strength lies in its
catchiness and the layering. Your Secret has good lyrics as does Jaded,
but I will go on about the rest of the album on another thread. Didn't
Have The Heart had not so great lyrics but a beautiful melody....it was
hard to follow the story line. Think With Your Heart was strong in both
areas. My favorite song lyric-wise on TWYH is Two Young Kids, my favorte
lines being: "Perfect love exists -- I've seen it for myself -- Its not
kisses or moonlight serenades-- Its two people holding onto happiness
before it fades.

His biggest hits were "Beautiful In My Eyes", "Jesse", and "Picture
Postcards From L.A."

His first album did very well sales-wise but his second one flopped
miserably, probably because the title track was about Drag Queens and
its rather non-commercial. Both albums are well written though. Go to
cdnow and listen to samples and of "Painted Desert Serenade" and I bet
you'll recognize a few songs. Deb mentioned that she liked this album,

Joshua Kadison was on very heavy rotation at practically every Adult
Contemporary station in the country at the height of his popularity not
to mention VH1. I'd venture to guess that most people would recognize
his songs if they heard them, especiallly "Beautiful In My Eyes" which
I've had to play time and time again at weddings. They play it a lot on
those late night love song request shows also. His voice sounds similiar
to Elton John's voice though, so people sometimes think Elton did it!

Sting claims to be sort of Earth caring person, yet continues to work in an
industry that pollutes the planet (yes CD factories do create pollution -
not to mention the natural resources they use up!). He also did a TV advert
for Jaguar, not the most fuel efficient or planet friendly car on the market
(oh by the way the factories that produce Jaguars also generate plenty of
pollution)

Sting like many of his fellow musicians want you and I to give up our cars
and cycle everywhere whilst he and his elite do what the want. DO AS I SAY

environment he's just another pop star hypocrite I'm afraid.

Rob, IMO you've crossed over the line of fan to fanatic. A fan is someone who
really enjoys a certain artist/groups work. But they are also open minded to
comparing it to other works they've done, or with thier contempories. From
what I've read Rob, you're scaring me. You won't take any suggestions from
those who have been fans longer.
To tell you where I come from, I'm a performer. I compete with a drum corps
out of Rochester, NY. I listen to a whole range of music from classical to
hard rock (except rap and alternative rock). In listening to Deborah's lyrics
she does come out with a good piece once in a while. But in my opinion, if she
really wants to make that crossover from good to great, she needs to take some
college writing classes. Maybe even listen to some of the great operas or
arias and get a feel for how words can be like notes.

This is 14 years later. I rarely, if ever, hear any of her stuff on the radio.
I do hear Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John and many other from that era.
Does she have the longevity? Right now? Sadly no. That's to bad.

Well Robby it is Deb's fault. She wrote a lot of teeny bopper songs that
where ment for her generation.
That Generation has past and the new one has new teeny bopper music.
The Kind of music Deb made on her first 4 albums just are not meant to have

The music on TWYH and Deborah are but Sadly Deb was ( is ) no longer popular
enough to get her new music played on the radio enough for people to catch

Not bitter, just cynical!

I find it very difficult and annoying when multi millionaire pop stars come
on television and babble on about the planet or Africa and how we must do
this or do that. But NONE of them actually live the life they preach. I
repeat none of them. All pop stars live in large (energy consuming) houses
own several cars and constantly jet around the world. If they cared about
Africa then why not sell all their homes and cars and give their money away?
Take this arsehole Sting. He has been campaigning in the UK to stop the
development of a runway where he has (recently) moved to. But he's very
happy to use Heathrow or Gatwick airport or any other airport in the world
at his own convenience (where of course people live nearby). If he was for
real, then he would refuse to use air travel full stop.

It's like people who campaign to stop a road or railway line being built
near their homes. They don't want it near them, but will happily use one
that goes past someone elses home.

If you like his music then fine. But Sting like many others in the
music/show business world don't actually live by the morals they preach
(like politicians, but we won't go there)

Damned near anything that is produced does some damage.
I'm not an expert but I doubt that CD production is going to be
particularly damaging.

> He also did a TV advert
>for Jaguar, not the most fuel efficient or planet friendly car on the market

true that Jags aren't the most fuel efficient cars. I believe that
most of the damage that cars do is actually caused in the maufacturing
process and I doubt that jags are much worse than other cars.

Sting's main conservation push has been an attempt to stop the
devestation of the Amazon. an unsustainable and self-defeating process
in itself.
(largely because the Amazon's soil is actually pretty poor quality and
farming it exhausts it very quickly)

So they shouldn't speak up on the poor of Africa?

What part of someone being famous means that they can't speak up about
their concerns?

Crud. Wanna look at how much money stars have donated to charity?
Wanna look at how many charitable performances they've done over the

How much did Sting contribute to the Amazon related charity that he

wow. A large house. that's huge environmental damage.
I have no idea how many cars Sting has, jetting around the world uses
some fossil fuels, not a hell of a lot.

People are entitled to not want a railway line built near their
houses. People who live near a railway line can either put up with it
or leave.

Your the misguided one I'm afraid.

What people like Sting want is for you and I to change our lifestyles,
whilst THEY keep theirs. Why does Sting not move from where he's just moved
to? If he doesn't like the idea of an airport being built next to his home
then fucking move. The airport will produce lots of jobs for the local
community. How many jobs does he produce? (apart from his butler, chef and
make up artist of course). You missing the point here Mad Hamish. He
doesn't want an airport next to HIS home, but he is happy to use one near
where the poor people live. That's OK by him. We call it NIMBY (Not In My
BackYard).

Everyone like to take a shit in a nice toilet in their house. But no one
wants the sewage works next to them.

Why don't pop stars give ALL their massive earnings to charity (not just
some) and live in a little 2 up and 2 down and ride a bike?

Sure your right that they are entitled to keep what they earn and do with it
as they wish. I just wish people like Sting would practice what they
preach. You say Sting has contributed much to Amazon Charity's, fine. But
what environmental damage has he done (by the factories that produce his
music CD's and hence pollution). Sure he's only one person. But he should
live by the morals he preaches. Not expect others to whilst he carries on
his very comfortable and exclusive lifestyle.

So why don't our top pop stars go live in Africa and pay taxes in those
countries, which would in turn help the local population? I'll tell you
what they don't, they like to live in tax haven's and get an accountant to
make sure they pay the least they have to. Nothing wrong in that, but they
shouldn't go on about how poor these people are. It's taxation that
generates the infrastructure of a nation not charity.

Pop stars are only interested in helping when there's a TV camera on them.
Simple as that. Sure I'm being general here, but people like Sting should
put their own house in order.

People hate Bill Gates, yet he has given more to charities than most pop
stars rolled together, yet you don't see him crowing about it on TV. Why
not? Because he doesn't have an over inflated ego like Sting or his
kindred. I wonder what the people of the Amazon think about Sting driving
around in a car that none of them could ever even imagine owning (or a car
that costs more than a small village hospital to buy). Oh by the way.
Jaguars tend to have lots of leather in them and guess what? the animals it
comes from are just the ones the farmers in South America are being
encouraged to breed at the expense of their rain forests. Square that one.

You say Sting has given a lot of money to charity. How much? And how much
has he evaded in taxes over the years? I don't know and neither do you.

Hey I'm not preaching that we should all go help Africa. If you want to,
fine. None of my business. But don't let over paid pretensious pop stars
go on about something they themselves don't actually belive in.

How do you know? You some expert in this? What is a CD made from? I'll
give you a clue, it comes out of the ground and is black. Sussed it yet?
Do you think makeing CD's is the best way to use one of our most precious
and dwindling resource? The factories that produce CD's often end up pumping
their waste into our rivers and seas. The machines that make CD's need
electricity to work. That often comes from nuclear or coal fired
powerstations.

So it's OK to create pollution making a car? Hmm don't think Greenpeace
would agree. By the way Jaguar produce one of the most inefficient engines
going in their cars. Rolls Royce had to start using BMW engines cos their
own were so bad and couldn't meet new pollution levels. Does anyone in the
UK need to drive around in a car that does 12-14 miles to a gallon? I think
not.

I don't have a problem with the above and generally agree. But as I said in
another post Amazon farmers are encouraged to breed cattle which of course
can also be used to produce leather for cars and other things. OK it may or
may not come from Amazon cattle, but the point is, it's cattle production
that's causing the forests to be levelled. So Sting needs to attack the
industries that encourage cattle production (i.e. McDonald's, the
Supermarkets and YES CAR MANUFACTURERS! - just like Jaguar)

Enviromentalists by their very nature want to reduce the pollution levels on
the Planet. The car is the single biggest pollutant. I understood (perhaps
I'm wrong) that Sting was pro Greenpeace. Have you read checked out their
aims? If he is (I'm sure it's been on TV) then he must also support their
belief that the use of the car must be reduced. How many cars does he own?
I don't know, but I'd bet it's more than one!

He could go and live in the Amazon, make his permanent home there and agree
to pay high taxes to help the local population. But somehow I don't think
he will.

Ya your bitter .
Listen man these people do more than we know but they do have to still be
real people.
Just a little thing like donating money time and a voice as Sting does and
Deb and many others to a charity of any kind helps out more than you or I
could ever know.

It's got nothing to do with donating money. It's to do with popular people
who stand up in public and say "we should all do..." but refuse to actually
abide by the same rules for themselves. My comment about Sting was quite
simple. He aligns himself with many of the "environmentalist" groups and
says he's supporting the poor (in South America) yet lives a luxurious
lifestyle, has also lived as a tax exile (and therefore denied money to
those in need in his own country) and has advertised a car brand that is one
of the worlds worst for environmental pollution. He's also campaigning
against an airport being built near HIS home, yet is happy to use an airport
that's near someone else's home! Simple as that. I don't care what he does
with his money that's his business, but if he sticks his head above the
parapit he should expect people to take pot shots. Many of my friends were
amazed when he appeared on TV in the Jaguar advert. Most people do
associate him with environmental issues.

(like politicians, but we won't go there)

come on. do you really think any big stars care about anything besides deb? i
think not!

Here's a hint Martin.

Sting lives in a _democracy_ that means that he is entitled to protest
something that he disagrees with.

No, you're missing the difference between using something established
and building a new airport. If someone lives near Heathrow then
they've decided to live near an airport.
If someone doesn't live near an airport and it's decided to build one
then they have a right to protest.

Exactly when has he said that people shouldn't make CDs?

that people shouldn't drive cars?

You're accusing him of hypocrisy while providing no evidence that he's
been hypocritical.

Bill Gates actually contributed very little to charity until very
recently when he established a self-funding charitable organisation.

Possibly because he already has $20 billion or so...
Possibly because the organisation that he has established has the
funds to boost awareness of the issues that it's addressing through
other methods.

Sting is perfectly entitled to own a jag or several jags or whatever
he wants to drive.
Owning a jag does not mean that he doesn't care about the causes that
he's commented on.

Tax evasion is a term relating to illegal activities. Tax minimisation
is taking legal actions to reduce the amount of tax that you pay.

If the government doesn't like people reducing their taxes then they
can straighten out their tax laws (hint: Most of the tax minimisation
schemes come about because of over-complicated tax legislation )

While there are definately some hitching themselves to a fashionable
cause (e.g. some of the models that campaigned for PETA but now wear
furs and leather again) you have yet to provide any reason to believe
that Sting is hypocritical.

Until you do all that you are doing is displaying the tall poppy
syndrome.
