1991 for Capitol Records. Measures 40" wide by 43" tall. Includes original
layout that was taken by Capitol Records to the Beach Boys for their
approval. Offered by the illustrator who did the art. The picture shown has
The Beach Boys type across the top. This is in the layout only--this is NOT

the SMILE cover.......MAYBE......but a reissue package from the 80's?
For $12,000.00 you might be able to buy the stained glass window from the
WILD HONEY cover. Or a car or motorcycle owned by Dennis. Maybe even Brian's
childhood tricycle. (The list goes on. A friend of mine owns a 20%
interest in a drum kit played by Dennis on tour in the early 80s. He paid
$600.00 for his share. )

Maybe the piano he played during the Good Vibrations/Surf's Up era? A
Chickering was offered for sale....possibly connected with his
divorce....for $10,000.00 or so back in 1978 or so. I don't think it sold
at the time.

I don't know if my mom did any painting or not, or if my dad did a
painting of her or something. Do you know something about my mom that I
don't?
I wonder if Brian would appreciate the painting now, or if it would
cause weird memories for him.

I didn't mean to beat Anderle The Younger to the punch. But just last
night I was reading, in the 1997 edition of "How Deep Is The Ocean"? in
the lengthy "Smile is Done" chapter, circa 20-March-97:
DAVID: No, he did not model. I painted it...
He even goes on to point out how that painting actually created a rift:
"From that point on, David says, "things got strange with Brian and I."
Brian was apparently quite spooked by the painting: "You've stolen my
spirit," he told David, "you've stolen my soul." He was less than pleased
it seems.
Anderle goes on to tell another funny story about a Dylan portrait he
did. But he talks alot more about The Painting. Definitely worth the
read. For those who don't know The Painting of Brian can most clearly be
seen in the "Just Wasn't Made For These Times" video.
Does anyone have a decent color scan of The Painting? Jonathan?

As it has been already answered, it was definately my dad who did the
painting. To my knowledge, my mom has never painted, or at least wasn't
painting portriats of Brian. But I'm sure she'd be flattered if people
thought that she had painted Brian's portrait.

"Anderle The Younger"? I like that :) Makes me feel like I should be
living in a castle owning serfs or something.
BTW, the Dylan painting hangs on the same wall in my folk's living room
as the Brian painting.
I don't think there were any color prints made of the painting. My pop
only gave permission for pictures of it to be used for the Rolling Stone
article (which I haven't seen so I don't know if its in color) and the
David Leaf book.
And after a long time away, my pop is now starting to paint again.

I no longer have the 1971 ROLLING STONE issues with Tom Nolan's
ground-breaking piece on BW, but as I recall, the painting was done by
David Anderle himself, as a gesture of his friendship for Brian.
(There was even a picture of it in the article.) But instead of
pleasing him, the painting seemed to spook him badly, and his reaction
affected their relationship thereafter.

I think it would make a wonderful book cover....and of course the idea of
a nicely executed, limited edition print issue is the stuff of dreams.
Jonathan, I apologize for having miscredited your father's work to your
mother! It's more apparent than ever that I've become to lazy to look this
stuff up and that my memory is fading. I read that (Rolling Stone) article
in 1973 and it made quite an impression on me (but apparently not enough
of one to know which of your parents is the painter).
While we're on the subject, and if you don't mind my asking, do you know
if your father felt that the article was fairly accurate in its discussion
of his involvement with Brian? I'm gonna haul the thing out and read it
again, and it would be helpful to know whether there was anything that
stands out as untrue or incomplete in any meaningful way. Understanding
genius is difficult enough without having to sort through reports (or
recollections) based on error or misunderstanding.
I appreciate your willingness to discuss this subject. I certainly
understand if you're not enthusiastic about grilling your father every
time one of us has a question about his involvement with Brian. But
obviously his presence at that time was nothing but supportive and in many
ways integral to what Brian hoped to accomplish. The fact that some of the
projects didn't materialize is something we're still trying to get a
handle on. I'd wager that for most of us, what we've heard of the material
and of the experience only makes us hungrier for the whole, true story.

Williams in the book "How Deep Is The Ocean?" -- it's been awhile since I've
read it, but basically what I remember is that David unveiled the work at
his house/apartment, Brian stared at it for a long time, noted some kind of
numerological significance of the flowers, and then said something like,
"You've captured my soul." In short, as said below, Brian was spooked.
But anyway, apparently people come from miles around to get their picture
taken next to this painting -- among them, Dennis Diken, ace drummer for the
Smithereens. And people send Anderle these pictures back to Anderle for some
inexplicable reason.
