I'm after two lots of recco's, if any of you
can suggest what tracks I can grab via K++ or
LW et al I'd be grateful.
Back in the day, when I was a young pup assisting a
good amigo called DJ Tomek pump out the latin
flava around london. Back in the day when DJ Tomek
WAS the London scene. I'm sure some lurkers and
maybe even Regs here know of these days and remember
Tom?
Anyway, when I was a lad was when the Powder Trade was
at it's height and a lot of people were making a lot
of money and a lot of them were in London at the time
(cos they had already rinsed out NY), they were as
equally young as me and I happily danced with their
spanner(*) women/girlfriends and I drove in their flashy
all white cars and I went to their plush all white apartments
and I often wondered how they made their cash but I never ever accepted
that 'free round-trip ticket NY-Cali-London first class
and all you have to do is carry a suitcase'...
The music. The music I didn't bother to buy when it
was on sale down at that place in the NCP car park in
Berwick Street (or was it Brewer??). Anyway, if you
bought your vinyl in London you know where I mean...
I'd really like recco's from the group of the best of
the late 80's early 90's Salsa: but it's all about the
VIBE!
1 - I'm after those Colombian Salsa styles from
the height of the money making powder trade years.
Like, Cali Pachanguero, tracks like that. I like
Grupo Niche, 'Una Canita Mas' hehehehe them kinda
styles, also Frankie Ruiz (although not Colombian,
he had the 'Destination' sound (Miami) going on
pretty good. 'Tu Con El', that kinda sound. 'Big',
but not big in the El Gran Combo way. I know I'm not
making sense, so maybe someone would be kind enough to
list their fave Salsa, Cumbia & Vallenato tracks from
this period (1985-1989?).
and then
2 - Fulanito merengue style housey beats. Having 'left'
the London Latino scene (cos it got media'd real cliquey
real quickfast) I seem to have missed all this 'merengue hip hop'
and cumbia freaky which has developed over the last few years.
Can anyone here recco other bands like Fulanito I may like,
seeing as I find quite a lot of Fulanito quite enjoyable.
I'm quite up on the Reggaeton thing so I dont need any
recco's that way. So, fook knows what it's called, but can
any of y'all give me recco's I can d/l of this 'housey
fulanito sonido'?

K++ or LW? You mean you're not going to pay for the music? So the artists
can get their money and continue to make great music? huh?

Yeah, I'm not going to pay for music until I find something
I like enough to want to have my own copy of, at which point
I'll then buy the kosher cd if it's new music or the original
vinyl on Ebay. Problemo?
Got any recco's for me then? Cos I aint really
interested in having a battle of wits with an
unarmed man... ;P

What's your problem? How do you expect people to hear about
artists and their work unless they come with a recco from a friend?
You dont go out right away and buy, do you? You ask the friend if
you can hear his copy and then make the choice yourself. Would you
prefer I go to the nearest record shop, put on a blindfold, and buy the
first thing I touch??
What if it's an old record? Deleted n shit? Do you just stop playing it
and recco'ing it to friends?
How do expect your music genre to evolve/survive if people are never
listening to what has come before?? How do you expect 'newbies' to
appreciate good riddim if they dont have access to the whole back
cat of 20th century latin music out there? Maybe you dont care?
Some of the music I'm after was created by people no longer playing,
some no longer even living, on labels which are now defunct.... Is it
just cos you want a part of the pooled royalty payment of summat??
How do you expect musicians to LEARN anything if they cant access
the music of the past? Stuff which isn't available on Amazon et al?
Most musicians are poor, or so you'd have me believe - are you
suggesting
these povrecito's go and shoplift? Or simply NOT listen to stuff they
dont buy?
For me, K++ and LW are there as a research tool and I use them as such.
If others choose to abuse what the program does, well that's their
problem.

I have come here for recco's of the GREAT music from the
mid 80's because I thought that the Regs here had a feel for
VIBES, STYLE and FLAVA from back in the day: Dancers Music
I didn't realise it had Hall Monitors and the only woman I expected
to find was the lovely Nina, who has proven herself informative and
helpful on the previous times I've been here...
Anyway....

I do not know what you do for a living, but assuming that you are a plumber,
would you go out and install plumbing in someone's home and if they said "I
don't really like your work", you would say "OK, no charge for time or
materials"? I seriously doubt it, you would probably provide them with
references/referrals so they could see your work first.
I did post my comment about an exception for recordings that are no longer
available.
personally I frequently buy a recording unheard based upon the reputation or
past recording of the group/musician or upon the recommendation of
friends/musicians...once in a while I am disappointed but not very often.
and I frequently check eBay for old recordings which are no longer available
and frequently post a search at Amazon and Ebay.
BTW playing professionally as an avocation for almost 50 years, I have been
paid for my work, live work and for studio work.

you do not know me at all????? we had a wave of this kind of crap a few
years ago when RMAL was very active with many posts daily with many very
heated but not personal discussions...these kind of comments drove away most
of the participants including many currently active well known Latin
musicians, they simply left and started up moderated groups where this kind
of response could be prevented...I monitor RMAL because some of the old
timers show up now and then and sometimes there is the opportunity to share
information.

I would help him out, but I don't have anything specific to recommend.
The only tune I can think of is "Caina" by Ruben Blades, but it doesn't
meet any of his specs--It's not big sound, not Colombia, not Miami.

basically asking for free music seems to imply piracy...his later
explanations of how he uses such fre music does allow for reasonable
non-piracy use (IMHO...probably not the opinion of musicians and recording
companys)
