Brush up on the words to the Star-Spangled Banner because the United
States rugby team is heading to New Plymouth.
The US qualified for the rugby World Cup as the second American zone
qualifier after beating Uruguay on Sunday in a two-leg series.
While the US narrowly won the first away leg 27-22, it proved too strong
for Uruguay in Florida, winning 27-6.
It will now play two matches at Yarrow Stadium, or Taranaki Stadium as
it will be known during the World Cup.
The first of those games is sure to be an emotionally charged encounter,
with the side playing Ireland on Sunday, September 11, 2011 the 10th
anniversary of the terrorist attacks on America.
The United States' second match will be against the Europe 2 qualifier
four days later. From there, the US will travel to Wellington to play
Australia in its third pool match. A decision on which team bases itself
in New Plymouth during the tournament will not be made until later this
year.
Officials could decide that it makes sense for the US to be based in
Taranaki, although there is believed to be a strong push from local
officials to have Ireland in New Plymouth during the early stages of the
tournament.
The All Blacks will play Ireland at Yarrow Stadium next June.
It will be the sixth World Cup the US has played in, having only missed
out once in 1995 in South Africa.
Just which team from Europe will play in New Plymouth will not be known
until March when the final qualifying matches will be played, although
Georgia is the only unbeaten team in a pool consisting of Russia,
Romania, Portugal and Spain.
The other qualifier to play at Taranaki Stadium during the cup the
Africa 1 qualifier will be decided at the end of the week when Namibia
and Tunisia play. The winning side will face Wales on Monday, September
26, 2011.
The World Cup is to kick off at Auckland's Eden Park on Friday,
September 9, when New Zealand plays Tonga.
Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch have been allocated five pool
matches each, while North Shore, Hamilton, Rotorua and Dunedin, like New
Plymouth, will each host three matches.
WOOHOO! Naturally that recieved no coverage from major media outlets
in the good Ol' USofA. The sheeple prefer simple things like NFL and
NASCAR. That can't stand sports were manly men and women knock living
shit out of each other just for the hell of it.*
*Hockey doesn't really factor in.
?? Thats strange, I thought the US would be crowing that it was in a
real 'World Cup' series (as in it has more countries involved than just
the USA). The US rugby team is now ranked 17th out of 95 countries....a
real step up from the past. I suppose it doesn't get much of a following
in the US because you don't need to be a tall freak of nature or wear
padding to play the game......
I'll be going along for sure, especially the 9/11 game! If that date
(even though we are a day ahead of your 9/11) doesn't inspire them to
play the hardest they have ever played, nothing will. I might even be
flag waving and cheering for them over Ireland. :)
There was Australian rules football on tv once here in the U.S. I
saw it only once or twice. That was fun to watch.
'Mericans sit on their fast asses watching a bunch of porch monkeys
run up and down a field with an inflated animal skin.

> The first of those games is sure to be an emotionally charged encounter
Tonight I was watching a cops and robbers show on Spike TV and
next thing I know it's over and some kind of fights come on. Guys were
punching and kicking and hammering the shit out of each other, with
wrestling moves thrown in. All inside some kind of a chain-link cage
and the crowd howling for blood.
WTF is this, I thought. It turned out to be UFC, Ultimate Fighting
Championship. Well shee-it, this is the kind of grotesque public
spectacles that went on before the Roman Empire went down.
SQ
Yep and it makes more sense than NFL or any of that nascar shit...that
ain't racing. That's running around in circles and parking it when it
rains...pussies.
These examples of commercially organized sport are just degraded
examples of amateur organized sport, but they all contain elements of
costume, event observance, myth, ritual, and sacrifice for the Good of
All Humanity, i.e., religion, so, yes, we do owe the Romans (and
Greeks) a lot.

FIne then let's go back to our rooits and put the criminals in the
arena! Blood sport is more honest that the shit they call sport now.
It isn't a sport if you don't have a strong likelyhood of dying a gory
and spectacular death. <shrug> The old drunk (Hemmingway) was right
about that you know.

TV is headed there. The first "reality" program that snuffs a
contestant and broadcasts footage of it will set all-time viewership
records. It's only a small step up from eating bugs.
