That is a problem with digitally stored medium. While a physical
photograph can last for a hundred years or more, I think we're all
aware of how fragile digital storage can be. People are going to have
to think about how they want to backup their family photos and videos
or they will be lost to the next generation.

So true. I had a conversation about this with a person that has
restores Hollywood films.
http://dvdspindoctor.typepad.com/good_bad_ugly/
"The 2002 restoration project is covered in an 11-minute docu. Paul
Rutan Jr. [1] of Triage Labs gives an overview of the Techniscope
format used on the film -- a more versatile and economical cousin of
Cinemascope -- and tells how his company handled the obsolete format.
"We can definitely make it look better" than when the film came out,
he says."
We talked a long time about what I should do with dad's 8mm films from
Alaska post WWII.
Bottom line, digital media will be lost long before good old fashion
film.
I consider Paul a friend, I've ridden motorcycles with him.
No I don't mind. And what future generatuons will find is a big gap in
visual history. Sheet I have oictures from my fambily from the late 1800's.
now the data is just data and is subject to HD crashes ect. One thing about
film, any film it shoulb be stored in geographic separation. So if yer house
burns down, you will still have the material. Today I am working on a film
from 1912 called Girl in the Armchair. And of course Magical Mystery Tour
Thumper
>
in the future this will be called "The second Dark age" because no
data will be saved, recovered etc. None... I think you could safely
say that the 2nd Dark Age started sometime in the early 70's and has
rapidly progressed to the point that in only 50 years nothing from
right NOW<marks spot on calender> will be recoverable by any
means...unless of course you have some antiques in the attic that
still work. But hey what do I know...I still think instead of getting
my info from People magazine or the talking heads on the television.
