So the Motogp teams cannot use more than 14 fronts and 17 rears per
race weekend (or thereabout) but can burn a couple of dozen pairs the
following few days? The FIM ruling was meant to reduce tyre use by the
top teams and so lessen the developement gap for the satelite teams.
just look how the likes of Kawasaki, Ducati, Suzuki etc have jumped on
this loophole. Bloody disgrace.

You've rather missed the point.

The tyre limits for race weekends were primarily intended to stop
one-off tyres being made especially *during* the weekend and
deliveredd to the circuit on Saturday night, after specific data was
gathered during practice. This was something Michelin did several
times for Rossi in Europe in the last couple of seasons.

The FIM rule as *not* intended to "reduce tyre use by the

top teams and so lessen the developement gap for the satelite teams".

Tyre development is done by the tyre companies, not the teams, using
data supplied by the teams. One could argue that the testing data
that say, Ducati supply to Bridgestone benefits Melandri on his
satellite Honda.

How is Bridgestone jumping on the loophole? And don't forget that
Melandri-Elias are on Bridgestone too.

The one person to abuse the old system was Vale Rossi with special tyres
being made by Michelin on Friday and Saturday night and being flown in
for the next day. Guess who's moaning now.

WHAT??!! For years I said this stuff was going on, Rossi getting special
treatment from Michelin, and you and the other eurofags scoffed and
called me a conspiracy theorist. Now you openly admit it was true??

I think I'm going to faint...

That is NOT true, this rule wasn't directed at Michelin at all. This
rule was signed off by both the major tire manufacturers (and Dunlop,
who get loopholed under the rule) and was intended to reduce their
costs, which had gotten out of hand during this tire war waged on 250hp+
machines. There was talk about equalizing things between the various
teams and riders, but I that was mostly thought to be a side benefit.

I think I can hear a donkey braying.

HEE : "It's all a Eurofag conspiracy"
HAW : "I think if you look deeper there's more going on" (cue 2000 words
of spurious analysis that compares the present day with the late 80s)
HEE : "The Eurofags on the newsgroup constantly praise Rossi even when
he's in the wrong. They're part of the conspiracy"
HAW : "The push towards Eurofag midgets is ruining the racing"
HEE : "He keeps saying 'GP would be better off without Americans'" which
just proves he's a Eurofag and part of the conspiracy."
HAW : "Hayden got the leading edge development bike which is what he
deserves as the best rider in the world";
HEE : "Hayden won despite the leading edge development bike which was
clearly broken";
HAW : "Hayden's having to ride a bike built for a midget. It's not fair"
HEE : "What's so good that Pedrosa/Rossi's done anyway? They've had an
unfair advantage from the evil Eurofag conspiracy during their entire
career"
HAW : "It's not fair on Hayden. How can he get anything out of HRC when
the evil Darth Vader, Puig, has got the ear of the mechanics, designers,
factory, sponsor, MotoGP officials, Dorna, FIM, Spanish government, EU
etc etc";
HEE : "MotoGP doesn't have the best riders in the world. The Eurofag
conspiracy keeps them out"
HAW : "Why should AMA riders leave the best pay packet in the world to
race in MotoGP. Just to prove they're the best riders in the world
against the Eurofags (who everyone knows only win because they were born
with a silver conrod in their mouth)"
HEE : "You see, he agrees with me. Which just proves that I'm right and
there's a Eurofag conspiracy"

Jeez', no wonder the horses can't get any sleep...

My understanding was certainly that Bridgestone lobbied hard for this
rule because they felt Michelin had an advantage at the European
rounds.

Oh, I don't doubt that. But the rule would have never been adopted
without Michelin's signoff, so they had to be okay with it in the end.
I suspect even they didn't realize how dependent they are on the wide
variety of tires they produce. Bridgestone probably has been producing
fewer variants, so had less to lose when options were reduced. Throw
in more relative advancement and Michelin is in trouble.

What will be interesting is what happens now. There is talk about the
teams making their tire calls after Friday practice, so having one day
to zone in on the picks. I can't imagine Bridgestone liking that with
the way it's gone, but will the FIM/Dorna shove it down their throats
anyway, for the sake of "competition"? That still stops the Overnight
Magic Tires from France, but would allow for less guess work.

Me, I never liked the rule in the first place, and thought it would
end up being a Big Deal...

Nah, why bother? The "pussy" hides behind his plonk wall anyway and
won't engage in serious debate on the issues of the day, choosing
instead to lob his handfulls of jackass sh*t over that wall...

Btw, has the E-word become the N-word of this group? The non-Es aren't
allowed to use it at all, but the Es throw it around like candy on
Halloween? Hmm...

If we have to have the rule to prevent Michelin creating special tyres
over the weekend, then what's wrong with it at the moment is the
numbers. It seems that it's low enough that by the time you've put in a
bunch of tyres to cope with changes in the weather and the qualifiers,
it's not enough to have a reasonable range for development. We've had
several races early in the year where nobody had tyres that worked in
the morning practice sessions. But the track had warmed up enough in the
afternoon to get a good feel for race day. If you can't get the same
levels of grip in the morning, you can't really use the session for
meaningful suspension setup. Which then wastes half the practice
sessions. I think we've also seen people with a single set of qualifiers
or having to make the choice between using a good front (that they might
have needed for the race) or fitting a qualifier front. On the upside
it's meant people doing more race distance and staying out on the track
rather than coming in every other lap.

Mostly, I don't like it. It's an added variable that doesn't have much
to do with rider skill.

Of course the next question is, would you recommend starting a race
team to join Motogp when after blowing a few thousand quid of tyres
during the weekend, some dickhead rider then says you have got to do
the same again but more so after the race meeting. I know thats not
the only variable but this looks like clear abuse to me within a sport
that could do without it.

"Some dickhead rider says"?

You seem to have no understanding of the sport at all.
