No D407 tires. They're kind of expensive I bought a couple of new take
offs for $187 plus shipping. I don't need 'em yet but I figure wtf it's
worth the chance just to have 'em. My front tire's getting pretty fucked
up 'cause this one will stop a bunch better than it goes.

There's only one place you can by D407s.... the dealer. Contractual
agreement, I understand. More like a conspiracy.

$221.95 MSRP for a rear. Zanotti's is around $185 plus shipping.

Stock up, I always have a fresh set mounted and ready to go.

You aware of the cupping problem on the fronts? Some folks aren't even
getting 10k out of 'em. Some dealers replace 'em, others tell you 10k is the
expected life of a front tire. (they all do that!)

Dunlop reflogged 'em and now has the tread running the other way... callin'
'em D408s. Word is Dunlop designed 'em one way and H-D wanted 'em running
the other way because the tread looked prettier. Could be total rumor but it
sounds like something the buttheads would do.

Got a reply to an inquiry with Dunlop.. they say they have no plans to make
Elite 3s, 491s or anything else in '09 Touring sizes. I haven't seen the
competition introduce those sizes yet either. One guy on a Forum somewhere
went to a 180-55-16 E3 radial on the back and a 140-17 D205 radial on the
front.

I'll send you the .pdf on the D407/D408 fiasco.

Yeah, I bought a set of elite 3s from them about 3 weeks ago, excellent
price and I am pretty happy with the tires as well, never having run them
before.

All hell, no chance of me sayin' there's something *else* I found
wrong with my '09. I looked at mine and the tread is all fucked up. I
figured the with all the around town riding I did maybe the quick stops
were having an effect.

The tread on the 408 look totally backwards to me. Tread is supposed
to channel water away from the center of the tire. The 408 looks like it
will channel the water under the tire.

Under-inflation.....

Tires don't just cup.

The big wear happens during braking when a low tire flattens out.

The Wing's useta eat fronts til I jacked the tire pressure. Then it was
back to 2 rears to 1 front. (Actually had a positive effect on the
handle, lighter feel)

Since I learnt that I've not had any problems with the HD's.

You noticed that too, huh? Saw two bikes in the showroom side by side with
each tire. At first glance I thought somebody screwed up, had to check the
arrows on the sidewall.

I'm surprised Metzeler or Conti or Avon has rubber for those barges yet. Of
Course, H-D will probably just change the size wheels again.

Folks reporting the problem say they're running 'em around 40 lbs..
recommended is 36. :::shrug::::

If there's nothing wrong with the D407 fronts why do you suppose Dunlop
turned the tread around the other way mid-year?

I didn't look in the book I just did the front at 40 and the rear at
42 because that's what I've always done. My front tire is fucked up and
noisy as hell. It's been that way since about 300 miles.

Good point, I wonder if it helped. I guess maybe they should actually
use and test their products before they put them on the market.

Did you notice that Tech Notice indicated that only the Rocker D407 came
originally with the tread running the other way. They're only renaming it
D408 for consistancy. Hmmmm......

Why bother? Microsoft has proven that people will buy anything and
essentially Beta test it for you.
