I figure that the answer to this one must be quite easy however thus far I
am at a loss as how to proceed. I have done google searches and tried the
archives of this place but have turned up nothing.

So I a Twenty here and it all goes to cover the libations of the person that
can answer my question.

I need to remove the gas tank and later re-attach the hoses to the petcock
and Carb. The thing I am having trouble with are the funky little clamps
that go on the ends of the hoses. The manual says to use a special pliers
to install the clamps. Now I got new clamps from the dealer but as the
pliers for this purpose were over $100 here in Japan I though I might be
able to get a set of similar ones from the local hardware store. However
when I got the clamps home and also went to the H/W store I could find
nothing that looked like it would fit/ do the job. On this weird clamps,
what exactly do you do to open / loosen them up and to reattach them.

The clamps are one time use only. To open, use a diagonal cut plier and
cut them off. To reinstall, the tool is about $40 USD from MAC or MATCO.
I've seen them cheaper in some mail order catalogs. But cheaper still is
just using worm drive clamps that you can work with a screwdriver.

The workaround is regular hose clamps from the auto parts store.

I Replaced the clamps with Black heavy duty cable ties, they been on
there a couple of years... and no leaks .. Wrap the tie around twice
before tightening to ensure even pressure.

I'll second that plus you will end up with clamps that you can both reuse
and take off and on if you have trouble on the road. No need to hog those
screw clamps down either. All you will do is deform the hose. Just slightly
past snug is good enough.

I'll third that, but be sure if you ever do take it into
an official HD facility for any work, they will remove
your screw-clamps, replace them with their crimp clamps,
and charge you for it, unless you specifically threaten their lives
not to do it.

Do you mean the ZIP ties? Like the things that cops use on occasion instead
of traditional hand cuffs?

This is a radical idea.....Cool
And the idea that everyone else put forward is the way my mind was heading.
Yeah that special tool is bloody expensive. Will chase those other ones.

Thanks everyone.

Another round on me.

Good to Know. Thanks!
And probably charge you for getting rid of the old ones.

Ummm.........since I spent most (20+ years) of my early life actually
working out in the shops as a mechanic (as opposed to being a
supervisor/manager since 1991, and everyone knows those people don't do
anything).........

I have a pair of those special little pliers for dealing with the earlier
version of those crimp clamps. You know the ones with the two little ears
that stuck out and scratched the shit out of you as you stuck your hand
through a somewhat confined little space to retrieve a socket you
dropped.....<sfsf>

Got them from an upholstery guy, he used 'em to clamp "hog rings" on heavier
cloth.

Actually - they make "cable ties" for the purpose of hose clamps. They are
available at marine supply stores and are used readily for sealing fuel
lines etc. on outboard boat engines and such. You don't need to wrap them
twice because they have a special end that contacts the hose completely so
there are no gaps in the pressure applied to the hose.

Cool, I used regular small Yellow ties on Gozer in his Yellow stage.
Never though to wrap them twice, no leaks, worked great.

Do the marine ones come wide and long enough fora radiator size hose?
Do they come in colors? Colors, oh the pretty colors.

The ones we had were ~6", and black. Not sure about other sizes or colors.
I have a guy here at work that has a cable tie that is around 2' long and
about 1.5" wide though. Not sure if it a novelty or a real tie but it looks
cool - he always hands it to people when they ask him if he has any cable
ties.

damn I like this newsgroup.. you would think us coast dwellers would
know that. The gap doesn't seem to be problem if your hoses are a
snug fit. but it is easier to tighten them if they are wrapped twice.
but I am checking with our marine supply store to see if I can get
some of the hose ties for the tool bag.

Thanks for the tip, drink up I'm buying.

At a Johnson-Evinrude outboard dealer, ask for #320107 ty-straps. They have
a radius on the big end so it will fit smoothly around a fuel line and not
bunch up like the square headed ty-raps from a hardware store. They are also
black for UV protection and they are gasoline proof. I understand that
Mercury outboards use a similar radiused ty-rap, but I do not have the part
number for it.

Thanks for the assist Bill! I should have mentioned that they were J-E
parts. I kept a stash when I left the Corps but used them all for other
things pretty quickly. We used a whole bunch of them every day back then
constantly doing P.M.'s.
