Shirley a round or 3 for the curmudgeons still left in this joint!
I rebuilt the carb as I am sure you all read. What you didn't read,
cause I didn't post it yet, was the final outcome!
Took it out and seemed a little rich...Too rich, was suckin gas like a
$5,000 whore on a millionaire! Took the plugs out and cleaned em
up...A little better, but not right! Took it off and re-opened it.
Found out that some dumb ham handed amateur mechanic had not tightened
the jet. Put it back together and seemed worse. Rode over to Danny's
place and we rode over to an Indy shop so I could pay for the clutch
plates from the other day. It was running so bad I could just about
watch the gas gauge go down!!! Used a quarter tank plus on a ride
that you should not have seen the difference on the gauge!!!
Got it home and took it off and apart AGAIN!!!
Took the new kit needle from the vacuum slide and reinstalled the old
one. The new one was a straight taper. The old one had a taper and
then a skinny section then back to the taper again. Re-
assembled/installed the carb and the new plugs. After dinner I took
it out for a run.
Ran great! Hit the highway and pulled strong to 95MPH, still pullin,
let slightly off on the throttle and no surge, just sweet runnin! With
the removal of the 190 jet and installation of the 180, it feels
better on the low end too! If the power is still good 2 up and the
MPH is better I may go down to a 170 jet to see how that acts. No one
ever drilled this carb for adjusting. I am trying to figure out why
the 190 was in there and not a 160, which I believe is the stock jet!
Shirley, another round!
The clutch is smooth, the engine strong and the carb is doing the job.
Tomorrow I'll change the oil, prolly a bit of gas in it.
