Had cataract surgery in May...replaced both "OEM" lenses. Went real well
and I could see much better. Then, the 1 in 10,000 odds went against me
and I developed a retinal detachment, which is a rare after-effect of
such surgery.
Reader's Digest version of the story. The replacement lenses are much
thinner than the OEM lenses with which you are born. When replaced, the
ball of goo in your eye tries to fill that void behind the new lens. The
goo moves toward the lens but hasta come from somewhere, and that is
from the back of the eyeball. Generally it will just tug at the retina
and cause no damage. 1 in 500 cases it will pop a small blood vessel and
it looks like you're looking through a field of gnats, when in reality
it is just blood cells. They are eventually absorbed and/or fall to the
bottom of the eye and are not noticeable. I had that happen to both
eyes. Still, fine and dandy.
Then about a month ago I noticed a blind spot in the corner of my left
eye. Hmmmm. Not good. Went to the retina specialist. She looked in my
eye and said, "Have you had anything to eat today?" Uh oh. I know enough
about surgery procedures to realize that they don't want you to eat for
about 6 hours prior to going under. It was very odd...and lucky...but
that day was one of the very few days when I didn't eat breakfast. She
began making phone calls and literally running up and down the hallway
making arrangements for an available OR. BTW, having your doctor run
around frantically isn't a comforting sight. Diagnosis: Retinal
detachment. A 1 in 10,000 chance of that happening from lens replacement
surgery. Untreated, it will eventually cause total blindness in that eye.
A couple hours later she was cutting on my eye. Sucked out 90% the goo,
cauterized around the retinal detachment with heat and some cryogenic
stuff, filled my eyeball with gas. I was awake for the whole thing, too.
Couldn't move my eyes, but I could see the equipment she was using when
it was inside my eyeball. Couldn't see anything else, though. Kinda like
looking at electronic snow on a TV screen. Couple days later she zapped
my retina with a laser for additional treatment. Talk about pain!
Sheesh! The laser wasn't the problem, it was the frickin' big honker
chunk of glass that she had to press directly against my sore, swollen,
tender eyeball. It hurt worse than kidney stones. Luckily it lasted only
10 minutes or so. I tend not to curse in front of women, but I said a
couple "SHITS" and several "GODDAM THAT HURTS." She sympathized with me,
and at one point uttered a mild curse word herself with, "OK. This next
one is going to hurt like Hell." She was correct.
Had to lay on my right side 21 hours a day for 2 frickin' weeks to keep
the bubble situated against the detachment so it would press it against
the eyeball and stick there. Couldn't read because it required too much
eye movement. Books on CD just put me to sleep. I was sentenced to 2
weeks of...gulp...television! I wasn't crazy about TV before all that,
but I hate it now. 'Cept for the Military Channel. They blow up shit on
that channel!
The fluid in my eye will slowly replace the gas and my sight should
return. She said it will take another month or so for that to happen.
<sigh> Can't do anything strenuous, can't drive/ride the bike cuz she
said I might bump my head and aggravate the detachment area...and I
can't see out of one eye anyway so it probably isn't wise to ride a bike
around town.
All in all, it beats going blind in that eye.
