I'll buy a beer for the person who guesses right.

Here's the deal. 2005 Electra Glide 72K miles on the clock. Had the
engine re-manufactured by the MOCO, the dealer rebuilt the transmission,
clutch, etc. Got about 700 miles on the rebuild. Has a carburetor, not
EFI. Starter and related electronics all original, never been touched. A
2 year old HD battery. They did a load test on the battery (twice,
actually) and it shows OK. Not perfect, but both times it was just into
the acceptable range. They checked the charging system last week and it
performs within acceptable parameters.

When I got it back it started great, but after about 100 break-in miles
it began hesitating when starting. It would barely turn over for the
first revolution or two. After those one or two slow "grunts" it would
suddenly spin fast, start right up and run fine. It's been getting worse
as time passes. Now it is exhibiting the symptoms all the time and the
symptoms are more pronounced. Below is a link to a video of it when the
symptoms were rather moderate.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQA0Sdp97gE

Cleaned the battery and starter connections. No change. Still hesitates.

I hooked a DVOM to the battery to see what it showed during the starting
process.

- Battery showed 12.65v with ignition off. Border line acceptable
voltage. Should be 12.8v or more, but I had been starting it/shutting it
off a whole bunch the night before and didn't put a charger/tender on it
afterward. Might have been low cuz of that.

- Turned on the ignition and got 12.03v with all the lights on, etc.

- Hit the starter button and the voltage dropped to 6v for the duration
of the hesitation (about 2 revolutions - 1 to 2 seconds) and then the
engine began spinning fast and the voltage went to 10v at the same time.
Then it started. Shut it off.

- Did that about 8 times in a row with the same results.

I don't know if the drop to 6v is a symptom or a cause. Could be
something is mechanically dragging down the starter and putting a severe
drain on the battery. Or...it could be that the battery is bad and can't
poop out the current for the first few seconds. OTOH, once it starts
spinning fast it keeps on spinning. I could just about ride around the
house on the starter alone. <shrug> Could be corroded battery cables.
Not the connections, but the cables themselves. I dunno. It's a mystery.

It's at the dealer as we speak...er, as we type...and they are trying to
track it down. I'm not necessarily asking for advice cuz I'm tired of
fooling with it myself. Let the dealer figure it out. I just thought it
might be a good conversation topic and we might learn something from it.
I'll be sure to let ya know what they find out.

Could be the problem, but I'm going to let the dealer find it. I'm tired

I've said this a number of times, but "one of these days I'm gonna make
it up your way." Unfortunately that time frame is bad for me this year.
Taking my boys to college then. Gotta help them move in, say good-bye,
cheer up the wife cuz she's gonna cry for 2 weeks after they leave home.
I'll miss them, but it's gonna be nice to have a house that doesn't
sound like there is a herd of cattle wandering around upstairs all the time.

Hmmm...what is "just into the acceptable range"? Sounds to me
like the potential culprit...

Can't really diagnose it until you get a good known battery in
there. Your numbers point to a huge voltage drop. Either the battery
can't take the load, or something else is drawing (relay, solenoid,
starter motor itself).

Got the verdict yet?

Makes ya wonder about some people. I mean who wakes up and thinks
that ridin' a horse smack dab though uncharted land, through hostile
indian tribes and who knows what else could happen, is a good idea?
And they bring a freaking air rifle for protection and providin'

And like I always tell ya, maybe next year. Bob loves hosting it and
has a nice place there that works real well for netscum type of
reprobating activities. Methinks it'll keep on keepin' on for awhile
longer.

Get Skype set up for her before they go and make sure everyone knows
how to use it and she'll have instant access for those miss m' babies
blues. One of ours works in So. Korea and Jeanne n' her use th' shit
out of it.

As far as th' college routine goes, I hope it's not some libtarded
fartsy place. Employers out here like Microsoft and Boeing are hiring
people from other countries because the liberal arts degreed citidiots
that come out of our colleges aren't qualified to clean th' toilets.
And even if they were, they won't do it.

Tape record it for those miss my babies blues moments. Personally, I
adapted to utter peace and quiet before the last kids ass went alla up
the driveway. With seven of 'em, th' last one gets absolutely no
empty nest syndrome pity. It's more like "bye" <slam door> <get

I'll side with Phil for the first thought. A *good* fully
charged battery is the easy place to start. After that pop for a
solenoid. I had a similar problem with a 25 year old, high
compression FXR stroker. When replacin' the battery & rebuildin' the
solenoid didn't solve the problem I hauled out the big guns. New
solenoid, a few new relays, & new battery cables. Been firin' up like
a horny teen ever since........<shrug>

BTW, crankin' it with a poorly charged battery will fry the
solenoid............

I'm betting there's more compression than that old starter is used to and
it's not up to the task. Reminds me of when my shovel got stroked. The teck
tried to kick it over and lost the heel from his shoe. I couldn't kick it
fast enough to fire up so back it went for a thumb starter. Now I have to
fuss with solenoids and relays and I'm on my second starter already.

Thanks for all the input from ya'll, but it looks like I'm gonna hafta
buy a beer for everyone.

The problem was intermittent. Did it a lot, but not 100% of the time.
When I took the bike into the dealer it was acting up and not wanting to
turn over. They all witnessed it grunt and groan, plus they have the
short video - so they know I wasn't imagining things. They kept it for 3
days and started it over 100 times - and it never acted up for them. Not
once. They did it when it was cold. They did it after riding it around
town for a half hour. The starter spun the engine like it was 'spose to
every time. The mechanic (the one who rebuilt the bike for me) even
stuck it on the dyno again and ran it through its paces and monitored
its functions, then tried it. Started fine. He couldn't find anything
wrong. No voltage drop, the battery tested fine...nuttin'. And we all
know you can't fix something that isn't broke. Other mechanics came to
help him with ideas and theories. No dice.

So I had them replace the battery and the starter. <insert photo of my
wallet being jump started by the AED> Maybe not the smartest thing - nor
the most financially wise thing - but I just want the damn bike back so
I can ride and not feel like I'm spinning a big Wheel of Fortune wheel
with "start" and "won't start" on it every time I stop for fuel.

They are giving me a decent break on labor and parts since I had so much
work done on it previously and have had nothing but starter trouble with
it since I got it back. I go in to pick it up this afternoon. (Saturday)
We'll see what happens. If it does it again I think I'll find a BART
station and let it sit there overnight.

I kinda wish I would have had just the starter or just the battery
swapped out first. That way I'd know which one really was the problem.
Assuming it works now I'll never know which one it was. <shrug>
Shit...as long as it is reliable I guess I don't care. Still, I'll
wonder what it was long as I have the thing.

Thanks again,

You knew from previous tests that the battery was getting to be
borderline. No-brainer to replace it.

Do you have the old starter? I would personally disassemble it
and check the condition of the solenoid contacts, brushes, armature
(hard to test without a proper growler), etc...

Figgers, didn't TCSFNJ pick that weekend too? Tell ya what, I'll make
sure th' trains n' tunnels are still here for whenever *next time*
happens. Maybe you can show the Honkin' Stinkmeister th' way.

Th' EKIII Run's more important than a train race anyway.

Yup on the battery. Don't have the old starter, though. I don't know
enough about the guts of the starter to do much investigating. Used to
fool with them in the late 1960s when I worked on my old Chevrolets, but
it's been a long time since.

Picked it up about an hour ago. Hit the starter button and it cranked
like nobody's business! It musta been slowly getting worse and worse
over the last year or so, and I didn't notice the gradual degredation.
The difference with the new battery and starter is stark. Spins so well
that I rode it home on the starter. Just 12 miles...

OK. I lied about riding on the starter.

Anyway, I'm a happy person now. Bike starts and it runs great.
Unfortunately it's cold and rainy today, so I just stuck it in the shop
until tomorrow when they predict warm, dry weather.

The dealer has been real good to me, too. They didn't charge any
labor...just parts. The ticket showed 4 hours of labor, but with a big
zero next to it. They said they did that cuz I'm a good customer and
I've been having so much trouble with it the last few weeks after they
rebuilt the whole thing.

Goes to show the only load test that matters is the
one from your motor.

And Jinks mentioned new battery cables... That's a
good tip. Those degrade over time too and might be
making that new battery work harder than it should.

Pretty outdated. Listed MSRPs are from 2009.
