As some of you may or may not remember I posted here on November 5th,
asking about broken drive belts, because I had broke mine the night before.
Well I had it replaced and all seemed well, 240 dollars later.
Well this moring I was out for a ride, by myself I might ad, when I left a
stop light, wound up first gear, shifted to second and VARROOOOMMM, damn
missed a gear, pulled the clutch in shifted again, VARRRROOOOOMMMM, damn it,
tried it one more time, VARROOOOOMM, son of a bitch, I look around behind me
and I'll be god damned, I am draggin a drive belt once again for the second
time in THREE WEEKS. WTF?
Now I am thinking maybe I have a deeper problem, OR, they didnt get the
back wheel lined up properly, OR, I just got a bad belt, I dont know what in
the hell is going on here, but I cant afford a damn 170.00 dollar belt every
three weeks. The shop I had the work done at was obviously closed today, so
I will call them first thing in the morning, to discuss this issue with
them. So once again, I ask you people with a bottomless pit of Knowledge,
WTF is up with that?
Any suggestion, hints, clues, opinions, will gladly be accepted.
Thanks in advance,
Jerry

My "original" drive belt has 30,000 miles on it and the way things look, it
will go at least 30,000 more. The secret to long drive belt life is correct
tension. Some people run them a little loose because they think it's easier on
the belt. Your drive belt is toast of you let it run too loose because the
front pully will strip off the teeth.

Sounds to me like they fixed the symptom and not the problem. I'd for
sure have someone take a closer look this time. It could be a fluke
and you got a bad belt, but I doubt it.

What's the belt look like? Any noticeable problems with it? Does it
have any teeth left on the inside? Did it tear apart, shred, split,
etc...?
How it looks is gonna lead you to the source of the problem unless you
just got a "bad" belt, but this is pretty unusual. I'd suspect that
something else is going on. If your dealer is stand-up he should take
care of you.

There's unfortunately a bunch of reasons why your belt might blowout
suddenly, like too much motor-not enough belt, too loose a belt, ya got
a rock stuck in one of the sprockets, etc... BUT, even a poorly aligned
belt should give you 10,000 worry free miles, plus it'd chirp and squak
and make all kinds of noises to let you know that something wasn't quite
right.
Good luck Jerry, and let us know what the problem was. Good to file
this kinda stuff away for next time.

That 883, unless EXTENSIVELY modified (100+ hp), will never produce enough
power to wipe out the belt in that short a period of time.

yeah, 100+ horsepower, and a bandit clutch. otherwise, the problem

I appreciate all the comments. The shop that did the work said they would
work with me. I am not gonna go postal YET. Lets see what happens next, I
will keep you all posted.
Thanks again.

if i were you, i'd try to calm down and really _look_ at your broken belt. i
would think you should be able to tell what did the fatal damage to it. are the
teeth gone? are the sides chewed up? is the belt snapped cleanly and the rest
of it brand new looking?
i'd even try to bring it to a local belt wholesaler/manufacturer and get his
opinion of the broken belt before going back to the place that did the work.
research and self-education are powerful tools.
good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

I had a bandit clutch and about 90 hp and went through a couple. Notice I
_HAD_ a bandit clutch.
SH
I suspect it's either alignment or a materials defect. I'd vote for
alignment. When I got the Sporty back from the local dealer for it's
7.5K service, it had developed a scraping sound. I took the exhaust
and left cover off (discovering an exhaust leak in the process) and
couldn't find the problem. I then measured the alignment (which I
should have done first, but then I wouldn't have discovered the exhaust
leak) and found a half inch difference from one side to the other.
Straightened it out, no more scrape. Moral: Don't trust the shop.
Check it yourself.
The shop manual says to use an aluminum welding rod and a gromet to make
the "special tool" for measuring rear alignment. I used a brass rod I
had handy and a plastic moly that just barely fit over the rod. Sharpen
one end of the rod so it'll fit in the hole on the swingarm, bend about
an inch over, slip the moly on, go measure your bike. Works great.

A "defective" belt might be the shops fault if they bent the belt
sharpely
handling it and broke some of the chords in the belt. Those belts, I've
read,
should never be bent before installation.

Very True but then that would not have been a defective belt, it would have been the
idiot behind the bvelt
