I'd like to pass along a big thank you to Harley-Davidson of Winchester, Va.
for helping me out with a repair during a recent road trip.
I was heading south along I-81 on day one of a trip from my home in NW
Jersey to Fla. About the time I crossed the Maryland state line both my
speedometer and odometer stopped working. A minor inconvenience you say?
Well, yes and no. The problem, for me anyway, was that without a speed
input my cruise control won't work. Ok now, stop laughing at me. And don't
think I can't hear you either. The unfortunate truth of the matter is that
if I ride mile after mile on the highway while holding the throttle my hand,
wrist, then forearm lose feeling and become useless. It's just a matter of
my physiology. And since my Electra Glide is configured with a cruise
control it won't accept a friction lock as a back up device. Therefore,
when the speedo cable broke it became a fairly big deal.
Fortunately, about 40 miles after losing my speedo I saw a billboard for
Winchester H-D. I walked into their service department where I was greeted
by a smiling Taryn Morgan. I explained the situation, he said he would get
me right in and take care of me, which he did. He couldn't have been nicer.
I was made to feel like family. I walked around the dealership a bit,
discovered they had a cafe, had lunch, read the paper, and then the bike was
ready to go. The whole thing took about an hour. What a dealership!
I know it is motor company policy that dealerships give priority handling to
those on road trips. However, everyone at Winchester was sincere in wanting
to help me out. I think this says a lot about the ownership of the
dealership. They certainly know where to place their priorities.

signals off my Honda CB350 back in 1974 or so....parked on base at the 32nd

The '99 had the old style (mechanical) speedometer/odometer. A cable runs
from the gauge to the front wheel.
