PICO RIVERA - Detectives tried to make sense Sunday of a pizza parlor
shooting that left three men dead and seven people wounded during a
charity fundraiser.
The names of those killed were not released Sunday evening pending
notification of family members, coroner's officials said. Two of the
dead men were cousins.
The attack occurred about 6:45 p.m. on Saturday in front of Falcone's
Pizza, at 9247 Slauson Ave.
Officials believe the Old School Riders motorcycle club was holding a
charity event in the eatery's parking lot when a man opened fire.
"(He was) firing wildly into the crowd," said Detective Joe Sheehy of
the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau, which is
investigating the shooting.
The gunman, described as Latino, was last seen getting into the
passenger side of a dark-colored vehicle with a waiting driver, Sheehy
said. The car sped away west on Slauson Avenue.
No further description of the gunman was available Sunday.
Three victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Additionally, four
men and three women were hospitalized, but all were expected to
survive their injuries, Sheehy said.
About a dozen children were present when the shooting occurred, Sheehy
said. "It was very lucky no kids were hit."
It was unclear Sunday what motivated the attack, which appeared to be
unprovoked, Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Byron Ward said in a
written statement.
Sheehy declined to say if additional gunmen may have been involved.
"That's something we're going to have to hold back for right now," he
said.
Officials said detectives were sifting through footage on surveillance
tapes from nearby businesses. About 40 witnesses inside the pizza
parlor had been interviewed Saturday night.
Sheehy said the Old School Riders has no gang affiliation, and
Falcone's Pizza is not a gang hangout.
While some witnesses said the shooting may have involved members of
the Mongols motorcycle gang, Sheehy said he did not believe anyone
attending the party Saturday was a Mongol.

"If this was (an attack) against Mongols, it was definitely a case of
mistaken identity," Sheehy said.
"Friends, family members, that's who was attending this," he added.
"That's about all it is."
Falcone's Pizza was open for business Sunday, but an on-duty manager
declined to comment. A memorial of flowers and candles stood in the
parking lot.
A stray bullet Saturday had pierced the window in front of the
playground area of a nearby McDonald's restaurant, but no one was
injured. By Sunday, the window had been replaced and the business was
also open.
Rey Castillo, 52, of Highland Park said his daughter's boyfriend,
Gerret Dandini, and Dandini's cousin, Tony Dandini, were among the
dead.
He said the two were members of the Old School Riders club - which he
described as a group of motorcyclists who enjoy riding together and
raising money for charity.
"The club's just family and friends," Castillo said. "All they want to
do is ride together and have fun."
Attempts to reach the Old School Riders were unsuccessful Sunday.
The group's Web site, www.oldschoolriders.com, described its members
as "ordinary people who enjoy the freedom of riding."
"No one represents any club," a statement on the site read. "We are
just friends and family who gather together and ride."
A flier on the Web site advertised Saturday's event as "Bike Night,"
and indicated there would be awards for best motorcycles, a raffle and
security.
Sheehy said detectives needed witnesses to step forward and identify
suspects.
"We'd like to ask for the public's assistance in helping solve this
one," he said.

Sunday before last when I threw the chain off the '78, the ol lady had just
gotten back with the twisted remnants when a Georgia State Patrolman pulled
in to see if he could help. I told him I was just fixing to see if i could
jury rig the whole deal together but was going to tke my coat off to use it
to lay on while I inspected the situation. I also said that I was wearing a
.45 in a shoulder rig and asked if he was going to shoot me when I took my
jacket off and he just laughed.
I took the jacket off, then my Galco rig with the .45 and put it in the tour
pak. He never asked if I had a CCW, looked at my drivers license or ran my
tag. I like the occasional run in with a decent cop.
My wife keeps a .380 in the pocket of her riding jacket and I usually have a
small pistol in a pocket also. But when we travel I carry a real pistol and
stay away from crowds of "bikers" unless we are at a clubhouse for a M/C
that we know and trust. Somebody starts busting caps at random into a crowd
with me, they better be bullet proof. Of course staying out of that
situation completely is really the best defense.

I thought most of the Mongols were incarcerated. They had strong ties
with the Mexican Mafia street gang. Not a group for a charity run.

Don't know about the rate of incarceration nor can I verify or deny
association with the Mexican Mafia, but every year at the Tiajauna Toy Run
out of Sandy Eggo I'd see dozens of Mongols hauling toys down to the kids.
Actually wound up in the middle of a pack of them when running up I-5 one
year. Can't say I wasn't happy when they exited the freeway leaving me all
on my lonesome., but they never hassled me. In my experience blanket
statements are seldom accurate.

violent storm was approaching. 50-70 Outlaws from Chicago pulled in at
the same time, headed for Sturgis. My bike had a prime spot under the
gas pump shelter as all these other bikes tried to get in there also.
Spent about an hour mingling with them as this storm blew in heavy rain
and scattered anything that wasn't tied down. Clouds moved on, sun came
out, they mounted up, and left us as we were.

i have been unavoidably mixed into the middle of groups of outlaws on two
occasions. both times they were more than friendly and i had no problems.
of course i was more than polite and did not disrespect anyone's putt, ol
lady or mother.
would have hated to be standing their if one of thier rivals had decided to
show up on scene and start some trouble though.

Your right, I thought about it after I sent it. It was a blanket
statement. I was commenting on a brief segment on AMW. I've been
watching it since it started. The first episode I was watching had my
girlfriends ex husband on it. I didn't know him, he was out of state.
She said he really did it this time.
Over the years when I still partied, I've partied with different 1%er
clubs.
. And never had any issues. As long as you realize, you may be
invited to join. But your not a bro, and show respect and watch your
tongue. I'v seen to many idiots with a snoot full get a very rough way
out.

yep, looks like i will be shooting with the weak hand for a while. all
that weak hand practice for ipsc may pay off if i have to pop a cap in
anyone.
i see doctor X at emory next week. he does the shoulders for all the atl
braves and atl falcons. hopefully he will get my shoulder back functional.
