Some of these guys are on their third or fourth tour and now it's 15
months instead of 12?

WTF?

This, after cutting VA Benefits and the rat shit at Walter Reed.

If I ever hear a GOP politician say "Support the Troops by staying the
course " I'm just gonna punch him in the face and get my one way
ticket to Gitmo.

Just heard that on NPR.

And the link you provide notes that they're talking about 18 months
instead of 15. Can two years be far behind?

And can't my tax dollar go towards providing a free Harley to each
service member in Iraq and Afghanistan? I might feel better about the
amount of $ going down the toilet.

"Support the Troops by paying for an Iron Horse!" has a better ring to
it, imo.

A round of grog for all

Well it is bullshit! my son who has 9 years in the Army spent 1.5 years in
Iraqi 1.2 year in Afghanistan and 2 years in Kosovo fighting. Almost 1/2 of
his entire career has been spent at war what the FUCK is up with that. I do
not care how or why I just want the insanity to stop. The powers to be just
don't get it and the upper echelon military officers are just mouth peaces
they all should get a set like Patton had.

<bi...@REMOVEbamph.com> wrote:

In a 1920 article in the Baltimore Evening Sun, HL Mencken wrote about
the difficulties of good men reaching national office:

"The larger the mob, the harder the test. In small areas, before
small electorates, a first-rate man occasionally fights his way
through, carrying even the mob with him by force of his personality.
But when the field is nationwide, and the fight must be waged chiefly
at second and third hand, and the force of personality cannot so
readily make itself felt, then all the odds are on the man who is,
intrinsically, the most devious and mediocre — the man who can most
easily adeptly disperse the notion that his mind is a virtual vacuum.

The Presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As
democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely,
the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some
great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their
heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a
downright moron. "

Only took 80 years...

The chief moron is surrounded by a horde of morons, all in faithbased
lockstep. Tell the truth. Doesn't Cheney look like a cross between
Darth Vader, and one of the flying monkeys in the Wizard Of Oz? If
you looked up "face of evil" in a dictionary with pictures, he's
probably what you'd see staring back at you.

If any of the morons in the horde show a glimmer of intelligence, an
iota of independent thought, they are asked to resign, or are fired.
Just ask Colin Powell. You might remember him, the only person in
Bush's cabinet with significant combat experience, and more
importantly, experience of having been COS during the first Iraq war.

Nothing is more divisive than the logically fallacious "with us, or
against us" choice that the chief moron is fond of regurgitating.
There is always the "loyal opposition". The "C" student doesn't
fathom.

But, enough of that. It is instructive to look at the second world
war, and the time duration of having men in combat, back then. The
29th Div, in the ETO, was in combat for 242 days. The 34th Div was in
the line of fire for 500 days. They landed in North Africa, in 1942,
and also got two Nisei units, later in 1944.

The 32nd Div, in the Pacific, was in combat for 654 days. This is the
longest combat service of any American division.

These are National Guard divisions, because I knew where to look for
the numbers, without a lot of research.

Regarding the VA hospital cuts:

http://www.globalresearch.ca/articles/SWE412A.html

I can't see the logic in following a course of action which creates
more people in need of VA hospitals, the wounded and maimed, and
then, cutting the funding for these same. If anything, the funding
should have been increased significantly. One of the few charities
that I give to, is DAV.

There isn't anything limiting the amount of combat duty, but there sure
as hell is a stop loss clause. In time of war they don't have to let you
out at the end of your enlistment if the needs of the service require
your retention.

Hell, the Navy is urging me to return to active service. Things must be
getting real desperate.(I told them it wouldn't happen voluntarily.)

My stepson is an MP in the Army. He's coming home tomorrow for a 14 day
leave from Afghanistan. I'm going to give him a hug and keep my chin up. I
didn't want him going in, and I gave him all the "right" reasons not to
enlist, but he had his heart set on being in the military, and going over
there to prevent trouble here. After several months, I caved, and gave him
my blessing. I can't argue with the idealism of youth. I just hope it
doesn't make him bitter if he's injured mentally or physically, and finds
that he's dependent on an insufficient and ridiculous support system.

> One of the few charities
> that I give to, is DAV.

Thank you. We also give what we can, when we can.

Fredrick T. "Moose" Heyliger was my stepfather
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossroads_(Band_of_Brothers)

Looking back on his life with us, Fred was kind of bitter about the whole
experience of war, and bitched openly about the treatment of Viet Nam vets.
We've lived outside the gates of Fort Devens, in the surrounding towns most
of my life. I'm young enough to have had friends whose older brothers were
lost or injured in VN. Fred would take us over to Cutler Army Hospital to
vist the vets. He wanted us to know. To see. To think long and hard about
war. I never really understood why he was so passionate about that. Until
later.

Man, just thinking about this shit.... I miss him <sniff>. He never got to
see the house I built on the land he and my mother bought here in Shirley. I
know he'd have taken pride in that, and would have loved to sit out back
looking over the old horse pasture while smoking a butt from his wheelchair,
which he became bound to in his last years.

My mom sold an acre to the town for a water tower before his passing. The
town named it after him, "Heyliger Tower". I take a walk up there from time
to time (just through the woods some 800 feet or so), and try to remember
the good in him, try to imagine his inner sadness, and pay my respects in
silence to all of the men of the 101st Airborne, 506th, Easy Company, and to
all who are serving, wherever that might be right now.

I had no idea what Fred had done in WWII until after he had passed. I didn't
even know that he was a Captain because he was chosen to replace Dick
Winters as CO of Easy Company for a time. I'm not a huge fan of the
movie/acting industry, but my hat's off to Stephen Ambrose for writing their
story, and Tom Hanks and Stephen Spielberg for bringing the story into a
medium so readily accessible to folks of all ages.

The men of Easy Company, The Screaming Eagles, of WWII should NEVER be
forgotten. Nor should any such men who sacrifice life and limb in service to
their country regardless of the "correctness" of any action to which they
are duty bound.

If wounded in action, my "government" doesn't support my stepson, then fuck
them, I'll do it myself until I'm dead, and I'll be pissed about it without
Stuart ever feeling he's a burden.

I owe it to those who came before him, so that I personally never had to
take up arms.

If by "finish", you mean "foot the bill", then I agree.

The "problem" is the fuckers who profit from the safety brought about by a
soldier's sacrifice, while at the same time increasing and/or maintaining
personal wealth on the backs of the soldier's children.

Ooh! Ooh! I know! I know!

Kill all the Muslims (since you can't tell the 'good' ones from the
'bad' ones and they keep switching sides -- just look at whether the
Shiites or the Sunnis are killing more of our good Christian troops and
who Iran is supporting), burn all the Korans, purge the history books
of any mention of Islam, tear down the mosques, seal the oil under a
protective layer of radioactive glass for the benefit of our preborn
children (think how pretty Saudi Arabia will look under a glowing layer
of glass), confiscate all the pretty toys (yachts, Ferraris, Bugattis,
etc) of the rich Arab princes and give them to the plastic-haired
righteous, and declare the final Crusade over.

All, of course, in the name of God.

If it wasn't so real, it'd be funny.

In Southern New Jersey, (Burlington County, I think),,, there is a push to
take all mention of the Holocaust out of the schools history books because
it offends the Muslims. (paraphrasing here folks)... Not that the school
system is denying the Holocaust, they're just not going to teach anything
about it.

I must be missing something obvious here, but what the heck
does the Holocaust have to do with Islam? Why would muslims get
offended at its teaching?

Because they think that all Jews are Evil, and simply made the whole
thing up.

At work I got a (cordial) complaint about the music I was listening to in
the lab from a nice Chinese woman that I've known for more than 10 years. I
was raised on Rock and Roll and I just couldn't help myself.... I started
steaming in my mind later, "If you don't like Rock and Roll, a huge part of
American culture, then get the fuck out.."

As Carlos Mencia put it in one of his comedy routines, "That's America
Bitch!"

You're not in your house, you're at work. A lot of places don't even allow
music at work...which is why I keep mine low enough not to attract
attention. BTW, your assertion that if you don't like Rock and Roll then
you should get out is funny, I assume you meant it to be.

I don't know... I haven't had a chance to really delve into this yet. I
just heard it on NPR the other day, and thought to myself... WTF? I think
the crux is Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his views of it...and I meant to say
"some Muslims" as opposed to "the Muslims". <shrug>

Perhaps he was playing:

regarding not teaching about the Holocaust in school...

>I just heard it on NPR the other day, and thought to myself... WTF?

Ok, that was in the UK.
New Jersey had the "terrorist drill"... what fuckin' next.

========================================
"Last month, New Jersey's Burlington Township High School held its own mock
terrorism drill. "You perform as you practice," Superintendent Chris Manno
told the Burlington County Times. "We need to practice under conditions as
real as possible in order to evaluate our procedures and plans so that
they're as effective as possible."
But the "real as possible" conditions included no bomb-vest-donning
jihadists shouting "Allahu Akbar." No red bandanna-wearing martyrs with
visions of 72 virgins dancing in their evil heads. No America-hating
plotters enraged by the existence of Israel or driven to establish a
worldwide caliphate. Nope. According to the paper, two local police
detectives took on the role of hostage-taking Christian gunmen.

"Investigators described them as members of a right-wing fundamentalist
group called the 'New Crusaders' who don't believe in separation of church
and state. The mock gunmen went to the school seeking justice because the
daughter of one had been expelled for praying before class." Upset Christian
students reported on the drill to their parents.

=====================================

About as useless as getting under your desk in an "A-Bomb' attack.

Easily cornfused.
The UK has "JERSEY".. while we have the ""NEW", and not so improved
version!"

C'mon, Pan, leave the part you knew I was responding to. lol

I'm glad I work alone, 'cause I can listen to whatever I want....which
is usually nothing. Silence is a rare thing, and I enjoy it when it's
available.

If I did that, I wouldn't be "funny ol' me", that tends to annoy and
amuse, all at the same time!

Silence sucks muck... IMHO.

I prefer my wife yelling at me VS "The Silent Treatment!"

I have a set of real nice noise-cancelling headphones. I'm a cube-dweller,
so radios playing through speakers are a no-no. Most of the time it's pretty
quiet, so I don't put them on. But they sure come in handy when there's a
pow-wow goin' on in the next cube over!
