Shirley! A coffee and a Dickel over ice for me. Anyone what wants a
beverage, give Shirley a holler.

I purchased a Metzeler 880 Marathon in 140 90 16, manufactured in the
33rd week of 2008, for the back of the FXDS. Had about 2,000 or so
miles on it...Slightly less than a 32nd" wear when I noticed what
appeared to be a problem with the sidewall where it's mated to the
tread. A definite line seemed to be appearing. Then I noticed a
scuffing or maybe the start of rot on the tread. Tire has always had
44 single to 48lbs double up, in it. Called Metzeler and was told to
take it to one of the two Metzeler dealers nearby. One is the local
STEALER and the other an indy shop. Went to the indy shop and he
contacted his distributor, Drag Specialties. I told him I had not
purchased the tire from DS, but from another online outlet. OK, no
problem. Next day went to the shop to meet with the DS rep "Larry".
He showed up 45 minutes late, checked the tire and then rushed out
behind the shop to call Metzeler and or his boss. Came back and told
me I would have to buy a new tire, pay to ship the old one back and
then they would inspect it and determine if it was defective. I
explained, politely that's not how Metzeler told me it would be
handled. Larry insisted it was how it was done. I politely told
Larry I did not think that was correct and asked why he rushed away so
I could not hear the phone conversation. He told me that's how he did
things. I explained, "I am not trying to insult you, but I have been
fucked before and I'm not going to get fucked again". He didn't
really like it but I just looked him in the eye and said, "I am going
to go home and call Metzeler and explain to them how I was expected to
buy a new tire and ship my old one back and if that was how it really
was I would get back to him". He kinda asked if I was calling him a
liar and I smiled and said, "NO, I just want to get the truth". I
then asked him for a card, but of course he didn't have any cards so I
instructed him to write his name and # on a piece of paper and give it
to me. He did hesitate for a second or two, but I didn't break my
stare or pull my outstretched hand back until he did so I got the
info.

Shirley! A refill for me and anyone else that's still listening.

Ahh, that's better. Now, where was, Oh yea. I went home and called
Ron Ayers, the outlet that sold me the tire, talked to Paul and
explained what had transpired. I was informed that is not how
Metzeler has their reps handle things. I was instructed to, if
possible, take good quality photos and email them to Paul. The next
day I received a reply that included a UPS shipping form to ship the
tire back to them. Upon receipt of the tire a brandy new one would be
on the way! Polite, efficient customer service by Paul at Ron Ayers
and my tire should be here Wed or so! Paul also mentioned he would
bring my experience with Drag Specialties up with Metzeler.

I gotta say I thought handling it through the manufacturer was the way
to go...Guess I was wrong, Ayers did right by me from the start!

Shirley! Wake up girl! Refills for any whats still awake.

Pic's across the street in a bit.

A lot of people here like Metzeler tires. I'm not one of them, my
experience with them hasn't been good. I'll be the first to admit I was
pleased with the initial handling but it didn't last long. The rear tire
howled mike a mud tire the whole time it was on my bike. When the tread
got to the point of being nearly wore out it would cause the bike to
wobble real bad at low speeds. Never again, there's too many good tire
companies out there to be fuckin' with that kind of stuff.

I will say the Dunlop tires on my almost new bike remind me of the
Metzelers, noisy as hell they are. I'll be glad when someone else makes
a good tire to fit it.

BTW, this is my 3rd set of Metz and I have been happy with the
handling, lack of noise and the mileage I get outa them. Now I'll see
how the new tire holds up before I change my mind about them!!!

Could be because mine were on a heavier bike. Got shitty mileage, noisy
as hell and when they were 80% gone they we dangerous.

They sold you a re-cap as a new tire and now your bikes sittin' on a
jack. That's be enough for most people I think.

Drove my Miata er Cadillac a total of 115 miles last year. Ride my bike
every day, noise is an issue for me, fuck noisy tires, fuck noisy
mufflers, fuck noisy bikes, period.

enjoy your new tire, I hope it's safe

Rog, you have a 2009, correct? You do know the MoCo is warranting the front
tires and giving out new ones, generally at no charge to the customer.

Yeah, I got a new one from the dealer before the moco fessed up that
their oe tires were shit. The dealer stepped up and did it for $50. I
thought about buggin' 'em to get my money back but decided it would be
more trouble than it's worth. I noticed my rear tire is now about as
noisy as my front was but only in turns so I'll live with it. I'll be
glad when someone like Michelin steps up and starts makin' replacement
tires for it.

Yep! Never had a problem with Ron Ayers. Never had a problem
with Metzeler either. Kinda sad that the guy tried to screw you.
Good job on handelin' it!

Sounds like you should have called the guys you bought it from
in the first place, obliviously.

..snip..

Speaking of tires, I decided to go back to stock Dunlop Harley Branded 401's
this time around on the FXR (from the internet somewhere, $200 shipped to my
door) after running the E3's for the last 14,000 miles or so. Liked the
E3's, but the 401's were a bit cheaper, and I don't have enough miles on
either model to know which I prefer, yet.

FedX just dropped them off. Man, that's some deep tread. Makes the high
mileage E3's look like slicks. When I got the bike it had 401's with some
miles on them. I don't remember them ever looking like these new ones.

Call me something, but I can't help but believe that the 401 tread pattern
will be better if I find some ice or snow out on the road should I be
tempted beyond what I can stand, and venture out this winter. I always
thought the E3 and Metzeler offerings looked kinda iffy for off road or
slick surfaces. Might be a foolish assumption. Don't know.

Wow! I had forgotten about the pits behind the bowling alley. Was down
there in '74 &'75. Ahh, the memories! I remember there some on the east
side of 27 just off the road going out to the base. There were others
that I remember but can't remember where they were.

Learning to ride in that deep sand sure helps me today to ride the bike
in gravel or dirt, with just my hips.
