days, best deals?

I've bought the last 2 pair of boots for me, plus my wife's, and
several sets of apparel from www.rockymountainatvmc.com. My brother
says he's purchased just as much, including kids gear and he's just as
happy with them. They usually have some killer closeout deals. Same
goes for tires.

I tend to think used protective gear is a bad idea.

Check all the popular online places - RMATV, Motosport, etc. for closeouts
on last year's gear. Not as deep a discount as in years past, but you can
save a decent amount if you don't need the newest and trendiest.

+1 on Rocky Mtn. I've bought several pairs of closeout Moose XCR pants
over the years. Bought two tires yesterday at 10 am, they will be here
tomorrow, shipped free.

I'd think that inspection would give you an indication of its protective
qualities. OTOH, all I used was a helmet, glasses, gloves, boots,
kidney belt, levis and a tshirt and all I have to show for it is a
dislocated collarbone and a destroyed toe joint. A chest protector
might have kept me from breaking ribs when I fell on my ski binding, but
nobody wears that stuff skiing.

Yet...

Let's see...
My last paif of boots... used, going on about 6+ years old now (I lose count?)
I was just given a pair of boots last week... used.
Last 4 chest protectors... gift (used), ebay (used), ebay (used), gift (new)
My elbow guards... gift (used), I've also got some bulky knee guards (used, and a pair I bought new a month ago. My neck roll collar, gift (used).
My new (at Xmas) chest protector is now used, my new a month ago helmet and knee guards are now used... so everything I own is now used? :)
So far (knock on wood) all my used safety equip as performed very well and I have sustained no injuries whether I cause them to be used or someone else beat me too it.

RockymountainATVMC is a good start - all around low prices. That
being said, if you aren't in a rush motosports.com and BTOsports will
send daily (it seems) specials and there are some good deals. Also,
surprisingly, Amazon.com will have some really killer deals. I just
bought a pair of Moose M1 pants, last years model, for $34! Brand
new. My 40" gut prolly makes me a better candidate for off-sizes and
better deals but it is surprising how Amazon will carry MX stuff you
wouldn't think... I found replacement vents for my Shoei bucket for
under 20 bucks. No local shop sold them...

Good luck!

A visual inspection isn't going to tell you the condition of the foam in a
helmet. Only if it's been in a hard crash.

Pants/jersey/gloves - okay.
The rest - not for me.

Not going to tell others what to do, but you spend how much on the bike?
Would you throw used parts on the bike? How about a piston that "looked
okay"?

The price difference between new and used protective gear isn't that
great - especially when you average it out over the time you'll use it.

Ditto. As we speak, I have a box of new stuff in my office from Rocky
Mtn. containing 2 pairs of gloves, a D756 rear tire, a pair of MSR
riding pants (old school pegs, not hippie over-the-boot), a jersey,
and a can of chain lube. All for $100 including shipping.
Incidentally, don't buy One Industries gear - junk.

In 2000 I spent $3750 on used parts... in the form of a 1998 300mxc.

In or about 2004 I spent $250 on used parts... in the form of a friend's blown up 1998 300 mxc exactly like mine. I sold the clasps for $300 and used many/many parts keeping my 98 going. One of the best buys I ever made.

In 2008 I spent $3750 on used parts... in the form of a 2006 300 xcw.
I use used parts anywhere it's practical, of course not pistons, bearings, etc. But I did use the cylinder from the parts bike on the last requild (it had to be plated).

If I had to buy new bikes and repair them with 100% new parts and buy all my gear new... I could not afford to ride. :) I haven't had a brand new scoot since my 1997 XR400 (before child). I'm perfecly happy riding good used bikes wearing a mix of good used gear and new gear.

> The price difference between new and used protective gear isn't that

The difference adds up over the years. My bikes rarely ever let me down on the trail. Once at Brock Creek a stator went on the fritz... it was original to the 98. Replaced with spare from parts bike. Last summer, same 98, pipe got against stator wires and melted them (I spiced them back into working order at home). Two failures in better than 12 years... all on used parts?

I agree with you about helmets. Pretty much everything else clothing wise I'm not the least bit scared of used.

------------------------------------------------------------

A year or so ago, I bought a used pair of Tech 8 boots on Ebay for
$150. I had earlier bought a new pair of Gaerne SG10 for $200 on
ebay, but they were a bit narrow across the toes, so I bought the Tech
8 boots and wear them without the booties.

This spring, the left sole on the Tech 8s broke. About a month ago,
I called AlpineStars to inquire about their boot reconditioning policy
and was told it was still in effect. I told them that I was going to
send mine in, as soon as I got some more to wear while the first ones
were being repaired.

Then, a week ago, I bought a brand new pair of Tech 8 boots off ebay
for $305 plus $20 shipping. That saved me $75 off the best price I
could find on a new pair at a shop ($400 including tax). I still
would have bought the ones at the shop, except they have changed the
Tech 8 to a "Light" design, and have redesigned the bootie. I was
scared that they would no longer fit the same, and Deb said that I was
not going to Little Rock just to try on a pair of boots (250 mile
round trip). So... I bought the "old style" new ones off ebay.
I love 'em, and the older pair are on their way to Torrance, CA for a
rebuild.

Other than ebay, I purchase closeout gear from Dennis Kirk, Bike
Bandit, & Rocky Mountain Atv. Dennis Kirk seems to have the best
selection of closeout gear.

Good Shopping and Riding!
Jim

Me also. I never buy anything but a new helmet. I crash too much
for used helmets. I need all the "give" that new foam liners will
provide.

The most comfortable (on me) riding pants that I have found
available are the Moose Qualifier pants. No frills, but I don't need
them. They are tough and comfortable!

TrainRobbers Enduro is in three weeks.

Good Riding!

we are moving to the Arai this season.

I gave $100 for the Tech 10s I bought used. The previous owner guaranteed them not to leak. Well early in my first ride with the things, I stepped both feet into a deep puddle (over the top of the boots). Damned things filled up...
