Hello,

My name is Marcelo Lobo and I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I met
this group by typing the keywords Suzuki and crankcase at Google.com.
Here, I found a report from Jason Whorton (did on 2002-03-06)
mentioning the break of the crankcase of his DR 650, 1998. I also had
a DR 650, 1998 where the crankcase broke in a very similar way of that
one described by Jason, in the place where the shafts of the starter
mechanism fits in. I also obtained additional information that this
same problem happened with others DR 650 made in this same year.

Recently I figure out that, up to the 1997 models (T/V models), the
starter mechanism had a torque limiter. From 1998 models (W model and
some X model up to the no. X2100560), this limiter was replaced by a
normal gear. Moreover, by mid-1999 (X model from the no. X2100561 and
Y model), the starter mechanism was once again replaced, adopting a
torque limiter again. This fact can be observed at
http://www.bikebandit.com/partsbandit/showschematic.asp?dept_id=132276,
which is, to say least, strongly suspect. Some Suzuki´s dealers in Rio
de Janeiro and São Paulo advised me that only fixing the crankcase
without replacing the starter mechanism by another one with torque
limiter would not work, because with the same mechanism, the crankcase
would very likely break again.

I would like to ask Jason Whorton and other people with similar
problems to reach me at loc...@ig.com.br, reporting their cases, the
solution found and what was the Suzuki´s position regarding this
problem. I will return detailed pictures of my broken crankcase.

Thank you,

Marcelo Lobo

Don't know nothing about DRs, but now your IG mail will be flooded with
spam... You might want to add something to fool email harvesting robots,
like I did on this reply.
