Northern Lights Magazine is committed to keeping a "light on the West" with
extraordinary stories and visual arts from some of the most courageous and
talented writers and artists of the West. This month, Northern Lights
magazine has organized an online auction to encourage support for writers
and artists and to help with publication costs.

Included in the auction will be David James Duncan's well-loved fly rod,
Russell Chatham lithographs, a Theodore Waddell oil painting, the fly rod
that Richard Brautigan used while writing Trout Fishing in America, a
Kendall Jan Jubb watercolor, hikes on old Indian trails later used by Lewis
and Clark, Terry Tempest Williams' old cowboy boots, and Rick Bass'
Yaak-brushed hiking shorts and boots, badly in need of resoling.

Also for auction: Brooke Williams will take you for a day-long hike along
the "Fertility Path" near Moab, followed by dinner, and Doug Peacock will
spend the day with you in Yellowstone, looking for mushrooms or grizzlies.
Pete Fromm will take you fishing on the Missouri River and Connie Poten will
take you sailing on Flathead Lake. You can bid to stay in cabins in
Gardiner, Montana or on a working cattle ranch in Colorado, and at bed and
breakfasts in Moab, Sequim, Missoula, Wolf Creek, Kettle Falls, and at Chico
Hot Springs. There are many more "experiences of a lifetime" offered, as
well as weekend retreats with writers, elk hunting in the San Juan
mountains, and a woodworking workshop.

In addition, there are lithographs, drawings, weavings, paintings,
sculpture, photography, and oil paintings by artists Monte Dolack, Mary Beth
Percival, Rudy Autio, James Todd, Sheila Miles, Dana Boussard, Barbara van
Cleve, Nancy Erickson, Michael McCurdy, and many others. Other literary
memorabilia includes drafts of poems, feathers, skulls, broadsides, rare
first edition and letterset books from, among others, Jim Harrison,
Stephanie Mills, Pattiann Rogers, Jane Hirshfield, Mark Spragg, Mary
Sojourner, Naomi Shihab Nye, Barry Lopez, and many, many others.

Allen Ginsberg's chair is up for bid, as a Western artifact from his time at
Naropa Institute in Colorado.

Montana. It is a journal committed to the landscapes and the culture of the
contemporary American West. Northern Lights has received 5 Pushcart Prizes
and 5 Utne Reader Alternative Press Awards for Best Overall Publication,

3) DON'T MISS THE SUWA ROUNDUP, OCTOBER 4-6

Each year, the SUWA Roundup offers our members the opportunity to meet SUWA
staff and enjoy the beautiful Indian summer of redrock country with fellow
desert rats from Utah and other states. Activities include an interactive
discussion of Utah wilderness issues with SUWA staff and board members, a
potluck dinner, evening music around the campfire, and-best of all-guided
day-hikes in our Muddy Creek proposed wilderness unit. Sunday morning
you'll awaken to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee followed by a hearty
breakfast prepared by SUWA staff in thanks for all your support and
dedication.

If you plan to attend, here's what you should bring along: a potluck dish
serving five people for Saturday evening (if you plan to partake with the
group), personal food for Friday evening and Saturday breakfast and lunch,
camping gear, plenty of drinking water (none is available on site),
utensils, folding chairs, and lanterns and tables to share with the crowd if
you have them. Feel free to bring your own musical instruments and favorite
libations, too. Access roads in the Swell are unpaved but generally well
maintained and there's plenty of room for camping at the old mine site and
landing strip where we'll converge. Please let us know if you're coming
this year so we can plan accordingly.

Directions to the Roundup can be found in the Spring/Summer issue of SUWA's
newsletter and also in the forthcoming Autumn issue. If you don't receive
our newsletter, or for more information, contact Margi Hoffmann at (801)
486-7639, ext. 20 or ma...@suwa.org.

4) JOIN OTHER SUWA MEMBERS FOR A LUXURIOUS TOUR THROUGH UTAH'S CANYON
COUNTRY

Long-time SUWA supporters and certified desert rats, Bob Helmes and Brooke
Williams, will take our members on an unforgettable tour of the Colorado
Plateau, from Boulder Mountain and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National
Monument, to the Burr Trail and Anasazi State Park, to Cedar Mesa and the
slickrock surrounding Moab. Days will be filled with hiking, exploring, and
daydreaming; evenings will be spent eating, drinking, and sleeping in style
at such luxurious establishments as the Boulder Mountain Lodge and Fry
Canyon Lodge (all of which are SUWA business members, we are proud to
report!).

The trip will cost $1,400 (includes all meals and transportation from Salt
Lake City) and is scheduled for October 12-18, 2002.

For more information, or to make your reservation, please contact Christy at
(801) 486-7639, ext.17, or chr...@suwa.org.

5) EXPLORE CEDAR MESA WITH SUWA

Join us for a rigorous week-long backpacking trip into the
archaeologically-rich region of Cedar Mesa in southeast Utah with
anthropologist Don Keller. The trip is scheduled to take place November
1-8, 2002. It's late in the season, so expect long nights and cool days.
SUWA, in partnership with the Four Corners School of Outdoor Education, is
offering this guided trip at a cost of $1,150 per person, which includes all
meals and transportation from the Four Corners School base camp, near
Monticello, Utah. Group size will be limited to eight, so register early.
